1977 World Series, Game 6 (WCBS Radio Broadcast) (Reggie!)

  • -To mark the 40th anniversary of the Yankees 1977 World Championship, here is the complete radio broadcast of Game 6 of the World Series, where the Yankees wrapped things up on a night when Reggie Jackson entered baseball immortality with three home runs on three pitches.
    -There have been other versions of this radio broadcast available before but NEVER in this quality or clarity or completeness for that matter. This was part of a lot of reel to reel tapes I obtained in the past year and it has everything from the pregame show with Ralph Kiner, through the full game broadcast with Win Elliot and Dodger announcer Ross Porter (CBS Radio was continuing the old practice of having a local team announcer from the road team in the World Series. Bill White of the Yankees did the games in Los Angeles), and finally 15 minutes of WCBS Radio after the game featuring the early local reactions to the Yankee championship. After that point, the taper then switched to the postgame on the regular Yankee station WMCA where Mel Allen and John Sterling were doing their own show and that is in a separate upload.
    -A great night for Yankee fans, and still a great night in baseball history all these years later!

    This was the National radio broadcast. The Yanks were on WMCA-570- during the late 70s. Jack Spector and then John Sterling had a sports talk show on WMCA in the evening. I called in to John in December 1974. He sometimes works in a few shows on the FAN in the off-season now. I am hoping to call him again and say that it’s really Second time, very long time ( 46 years).

    • @epaddon
      @epaddon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it was the national broadcast but it was the only broadcast of the World Series since at the time MLB did not allow the local announcers to do their own broadcast (that only began in 1984). The local station was allowed to air the national feed as well as the network affiliate so consequently, this broadcast was also heard on WMCA (with John and Mel Allen doing a separate pregame and postgame) in addition to WCBS.

    • @epaddon
      @epaddon  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In this era, there was only the one network radio broadcast during the World Series. That didn't change until 1982 when separate local WS radio broadcasts were finally permitted. It was only during the LCS until 1983 that there were separate local and network telecasts.

    • @epaddon

      Glad you enjoyed it! I should mention there is no Yankee radio call of this or any World Series game from this era or before because until 1984, there was only one radio broadcast of the World Series games. That changed starting in 1984 when as part of the tradeoff for banning local telecasts of the LCS, the local teams could start doing their own radio broadcasts of the World Series. In 77 and 78 they were still using the old custom of a local announcer doing the national games which is why Dodger announcer Ross Porter was doing these games in New York, but for the games in LA, Bill White from the Yankee network did the PBP.

      @@epaddon I just thought of something. When CBS Radio Sports started doing the Saturday Game of the Week again back in 1985, they used the 5tb inning as the " hometown inning". At 2:39, Ralph Kiner said the Dodgers had never lost a World Series in an odd-numbered year. He was referring to their Los Angeles years, as they lost in '41, '47, '49, and '53 (in Brooklyn). They lost the '77 WS (this was the final game of that series) and they lost the most recent one (2017, to the Astros).

      October 16, 1977. It came on WMCA just after Game 5 of the World Series ended. Sterling and Mel Allen did a very quick five minute World Series postgame show (with Sterling at MSG) and then they just started the regular Isles broadcast. The tape deteriorated during the first intermission and nothing was salvageable after that.
