    "You really think New York will score 41 on the Colts defense?" The intro of the broadcast on score predictions was worth its own show.

    The announcers, Charlie Jones, Pat Summerall and George Ratterman had much more incitel than their TV counterparts. They recognized right away that the Jets were attacking to their left, against the aging right side of the Baltimore defense. The TV guys never caught on. One of the best radio broadcasts of all time..

    • @brianwolf6166
      @brianwolf6166 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      All the announcers had stellar moments ...
      For the TV broadcast, DeRogatis broke down how the Baltimore zone worked and how Namath would attack the short zones with his backs ... He also predicted that successful running by the Jets would win the game.
      On radio, Ratterman was the first to point out how the Jets were taking their time at the line of scrimmage with long signal counts ...
      Summerall had many great moments, breaking down the Colt players but indicated immediately how the early injury to Colt safety Rick Volk affected their defensive strategy ...
      Gowdy and Jones were excellent but while Jones was informing viewers about the Jets attacking their left side of the Colts defense, Gowdy was spot on about some of the top talent in this game including Mackey, Richardson, Snell, Namath and Sauer ...
      Rote also pointed out how Namath and Sauer would adjust to the blitzes and Morrall's use of a balanced attack compared to Unitas wanting to always throw, he also pointed out to viewers how important new acquisitions to the Jets team, OG Bob Talamini and backup QB Babe Parilli were to a possible victory.
      NBC was on top of everything, while Summerall was amazed at how well the Jets attacked the Colt defense.

      @@jp783yeah, I've heard it all especially on Morrall's first interception. If you look at the play again, Al Atkinson barely tipped Morrall's pass to Tom Mitchell, which altered the pass and instead of hitting Mitchell in his hands, careened off his shoulder pads, and Randy Beverly had to practically do a full turnaround to intercept the pass. No way that was a fix. Morrall woke up from his dream season and the Jets played a great, ball control game. So what other signs of the fix were in? Surely not Bubba as he said it was a fix. If it was, he was in on it as he played a subpar game and Bubba was irate they lost.

    What a gem to find this recording of the national radio broadcast of Super Bowl III. Three in the booth is crowded but I understand why NBC borrowed Pat Summerall, to bring balance because NBC only covered the AFL, and this was the only interleague game that counted. Still there was no talking over each other. And the commentary remained professional and journalistic. Summerall and George Ratterman were both very insightful. And while Charlie Jones slipped into TV-style announcing at the beginning of a lot of plays, he was outstanding on the basics of score, time, down and distance, etc., and especially so in keeping the listener up to speed with personnel in the game at any given time. Thank you for posting this. I considered it three hours well-spent.

I also found the interview with Pete Rozelle interesting. Then, they were worried about scheduling around baseball. Now sports have to schedule around the NFL! Two other observations I thought of - the Super Bowl refs, pre-merger, all wore the NFL-style "black and white Zebras," even though the original AFL decked out their officials with red hats and red and white stripes. Also, the AFL's two-point conversion option was disallowed and not originally incorporated into the rules with the merger.

      I have always hoped to hear the Jets local broadcast of Merle Harmon of this game and if you have it on reel to reel I hope it can be transferred and shared some day! It wasn't a question of allowing since there's no prohibition rule against separate network and local radio broadcasts of the same event in the same market. WNBC as the NBC flagship already had rights to air the Super Bowl regardless of who played.

    • @chrisneidenberg3509
      @chrisneidenberg3509 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably, WABC had no choice in that NBC Radio had the network rights - in sync with their television exclusivity - and had a natural and compelling interest to try cutting into the New York radio audience pie using their flagship station. Perhaps there were a few Jet fans not thrilled with the Harmon/Deluca team that wanted an alternative and in saying that, certainly IMO \ Harmon/Deluca were a good team. BTW, on the predictions, could you even conceive, under any circumstances, CBS/NFL stalwart Summerall picking the Jets, even if, deep down, he thought somehow they were capable?

    • @markvidpa

    When the Colts were trailing 16-7 after scoring their only touchdown, you might ask that, after recovering the onside kick and marching down the field, why not try to make the field goal to cut the lead to 16-10? The answer could be Don Shula's apparent lack of confidence in Lou Michaels (brother of Jets assistant - and future head - coach, Walt Michaels, who missed three field goals. Still, if the Colts somehow got the ball one last time and again marched to within close range of the end zone, Shula might still have had to turn to Michaels one last time.

    Sorry, my math was off on the last post. If Michaels had converted the hypothetical field goal, the Colts would have been in a position to win and would have had to have scored a touch down and then convert the PAT. If the Colts had somehow made it 16-14 after getting the onside kick and got the ball one final time, then Shula might still have had to turn to Michaels. One other aside, interesting that, in the early years of the Super Bowl, the network not covering it that year still supplied a broadcaster to give their league's perspective. In this case, Pat Summerall from CBS. Would be like Fox lending Joe Buck to the NBC team of Al Michaels and Chris Collinsworth. Also, note they didn't even make a big deal over the coin toss! Apparently, opting to leave people guessing until the kickoff itself. Why?

      Interestingly enough, I always figured that, had the Colts somehow come back to win 17-16, they wouldn't haven't felt so great about it. After all, they were HUGE favorites and a squeaker of a win, while better than an L, would have been somewhat of an embarrassment given the NFL's supposed superiority.

    By the way, who is the third voice on this? I recognize Charlie Jones and Pat Summerall.

    • @epaddon
      @epaddon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      George Ratterman, who was the regular NBC AFL expert paired with Jones in other broadcasts. Summerall was already working for CBS but was loaned to NBC for this broadcast (including a pregame feature on the NBC telecast) to offer an NFL perspective since this was still when the different networks had exclusive rights on the respective leagues.

      It's George Ratterman, a commentator/color man and former Cleveland Browns quarterback. He worked NBC games on TV/radio in the late 60s and early 70s after the network first landed the AFL broadcast contract - taking over for ABC - in 1965. Totally unrelated to his football/broadcasting career, Ratterman was later elected a county sheriff for the Kentucky county directly across from Cincinnati and was embroiled in some kind of political scandal for which he was eventually vindicated. There are more details on this - I think - on his Wikipedia page.

      @@epaddon In the first Super Bowl, both CBS and NBC covered the game. Ratterman and Summerall both interviewed Vince Lombardi, the coach of the Green Bay Packers during the post game. But they only had one microphone. So Ratterman and Summerall fought for the mic during the post game interview.

    Did the Jets and Colts radio announcers broadcast the game?

    • @epaddon
      @epaddon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, they had their own separate radio broadcasts heard locally on their regular stations (WABC in New York; I don't recall which station did the Colts) while the national broadcast would have been heard on the NBC affiliate (WNBC in this case in New York). I have never heard either local broadcast surface.

      WABC had Merle Harmon and former Jet, Sam DeLuca doing the radio broadcast. I have only heard highlights of their Super Bowl broadcast on the commercially released album "Super Jets".

    Jets did not dominate, total yards were virtually even. The four interceptions the Jets obtained were the difference, just think how different the outcome would have been without those.
