The following articles were released by the NY Japan Society.
Born in Japan’s Gifu Prefecture, Yoshiko Goto began studying kaketsugi techniques under her father, the kaketsugi craftsman Tesshu Kataoka, when she was in high school. She has been practicing officially as a kaketsugi artisan since she was 20 years old.
The primary characteristic of her technique is successfully making repairs after creating designs from constructions of differing materials and analyzing them. Through these methods, she repairs torn fabrics as if by magic.
Her unflagging efforts at improving her technique and her spirit of inquiry have brought joy and hope to many customers with damaged kimono and other clothes around the world.
Oh Madame !! Je suis tailleur depuis 47 ans, j'ai rarement vu un travail de cette qualité ses 20 dernières années
Merci c'est juste magnifique.
Vous avez raison. Travail exquis.
You have a skill of a surgeon! As a matter of fact, the principle of this technique is almost identical to 'autologous skin graft' (taking a part of one's own skin from elsewhere and transplanting it onto an area of injury). In order to minimize scarring, you have to align the graft according to the 'tension lines' of the skin (in your case - the direction of the threads in the fabric). Then it is sutured (stitched) underneath the surface of the skin (makes the stitches invisible, and reduces scarring). How do you do this with no optical magnification???
Looks like optical magnification to me: th-cam.com/video/rsvdN5vpTBI/w-d-xo.html
@@HammyHavoc thanks, that makes sense, otherwise it would be quite difficult to do! And even so I’m amazed at such skilled work, it truly seems magical!
Wow. Kaketsugi craftsmanship literally has the most dramatic before and after pics happening on a single piece of fabric. Take that, 5-minute Crafts!
Five minute crafts is literally just bright and shiny colors for babies. If you thought that was crafts, i have some bad news about your media literacy and understanding of the world around you that might also answer a lot of the questions you have about why things aren't going the way you wanted them to in your life.
@@SnepperStepTV Good story. Keep up your self-righteous presumptions of my media literacy and understanding of the world because, who knows, I might give an actual flying fvck about your thoughts sometime. Cheers ;)
@@SnepperStepTV I'm always curious about folks who pull out term like media literacy in a youtube response thread. It doesn't read out as the interaction type of someone whose practical with what they preach.
I love to see craftsmanship like this. But with. Our throw-away society and ‘fashion’ these skills are rarely recognised. I hope the person who did this gets to see how her or his skills are truly appreciated.
Because there's no style, like Italian Moist or designers. If you have a garment with a valuable sentiment, it would be expensive for this kind of work.
Because we can make a new one faster than repairing one nowadays! And time should be the most important resource in life. The real answer is to make more resilient clothing
@@princessrad111 yes. But these companies are going out of existence because of ‘fast fashion’ which is a get rich quick industry and a curse on the environment. I have a piece of this (type of) fabric and it’s cared for and admired as the work of art that it is.
@@princessrad111 that's the problem, society thinking that only time is the most valuable resource, when really the respect for life, meaning also the respect for this earth should be the most valuable resource. Thinking that our personal time is the most valuable, is exactly what got our planet into this precarious situation in the first place. We are just guests on this planet, we do not own it.
@@princessrad111 actually, no, I've made a tailored jacket before. It takes WAY longer than running a few stitches around a patch and snipping off the excess threads as shown in this video. Maybe you could make a cheap knockoff in a similar amount of time, but it wouldn't be anywhere near the same level of quality of a properly tailored jacket. It would probably just be a flimsy, unlined, costume piece.
Amazing! As a clothes maker for 10 years, i never knew that this could be done
Yoshiko's father was a tailor but had to close down his business because with the increasing of the ready to wear clothes (fast fashion) from cheaper places (China, Vietnam, etc) he lost customers. At the same time he had to feed a family and decided to reopen his business as a clothes repair shop. He taught himself the art of invisible stitching and later on he passed his knowledge to his daughter Yosiko. Both work together.
My mind is completely blown away!! Magic, I tell you!
Mine too. The attention to detail is remarkable.
I repaired a red wool blazer invisibly once, I pulled threads from the inside seam allowances and it worked very well. This, however is another level, absolutelx astounding work! 👏👏
Incredible skill, so impressive - wish they would teach and value skills like this in our throw away culture
Just watched your video in NHK world Japan
I can't even imagine how much hard work is needed
To think you're following the path choosen by your father and continuing his legacy, I'm so touched.
🤗☺️
Watched this so many times. So therapeutic. Being a person who enioys craft, and also one who doesn't like to throw stuff away, this restoration technique brings me much joy.
i had no idea repairs like this were possible?! this is really amazing!
素晴らしい!こういう凄い技術を持った人がずっと絶えることのない世の中であってほしい
Beautiful work, indeed. This craftsman is the Michelangelo of textile repair.
Reminds me of a skin graft. I was a bit surprised when you used the fusible tape. I imagine when this technique was practiced in the past they just left the threads dangling on the wrong side of the garment, or perhaps had some other method of securing them.
This video is a thing of beauty. Thank you.
Wow, very impressive! Japanese craftsmanship is so high standard, and well worth learning from. And the speed with which this was accomplished, even allowing for preparation not shown in the video, increases its value greatly. Thank you.
Excellent work! Very skillful! My question would be what part of the jacket had enough excess fabric to cut off for the repair patch? This technique is similar to repairing hand woven fabric, except you weave in one thread at a time.
I would never believe that something like that would be possible
Wow even the different coloured thread doesn't show -this is amazing!
Wow! Super talented!! What a fantastic way to maintain quality clothing.

U're wonderful! Thanks.
It is magic! The magic of refined skill. 😍 That was amazing! I need to give that a try on the next appropriate mending project! I think the hole my son's jeans might work for this technique, though I don't think I will be able to find fabric that matches as perfectly.
