  • In this Thanksgiving Best Of, we revisit our conversation with our friend Anne Applebaum! We aired this a few months ago when Anne's newest book, Autocracy Inc., had been released. She chronicles the rise of authoritarianism around the world and how those autocracies work together to keep themselves in power. With Donald Trump elected President once again, could we be heading for a similar fate? Other countries thwarted authoritarian candidates over the last year, but America decided that another round of Trumpism was the way to go. We can only hope that the country can survive it.

They can try to silence criticism but people will find new & exciting ways to get the message across. Anne gave interviews at the beginning of the russian invasion which is where I 1st heard anyone (her's being the sole voice) speak rationally, empathically & genuinely informed on the subject, been a fan ever since.

Foreign money laundering investments are not rare in real estate in New York and Panama (T Ocean), and have been known to get Atlantic City casinos in trouble.

That’s an interesting photo of Anne. It has an old-fashioned look to it. It’s a very crisp and clear photo. A stocking over the lens and you’re right back in the 40s or 50s.

The suggestions for countering authoritarianism aret't bad. But they don't get @ the fact that humans are drawn to disruptive figures when their society is ailing, is defective. Demagogues stoke grievance to gain traction. That grievance comes from somewhere. We have a dishonest market system (we don't account for externalities), so harmful practices bring profit. Harmful practices will multiply. Getting onto a sustainable path remains an elusive goal. A society that offers no future for youth affects people's psyche, even if they don't consciously identify with the faction that explicitly aims to address environmental problems. And the faction that supposedly does that omits any mention of the most efficient & fair remedy: Fee-&-Dividend ~ envt'l impact

Don't EVER expect basic moral decency to resolve America's current situation. Given the situation in which Trump finds himself, he simply has no choice. Has it never occurred to anyone that giving total autonomy over the legal system of the entire country to a convicted scam artist and felon will only result in that convicted scam artist and felon relentlessly corrupting the system for his own personal benefit.
