Could Humanity Survive a Nuclear Winter?

  • The possibility of total annihilation through a nuclear war has been in the cultural zeitgeist since the start of the Cold War. Just the thought alone might be enough to induce nightmares in the masses, but the possibility has not been entirely off the table since then. Yes, the world’s superpowers have cooled down in the last couple of decades, but whenever there is political tension involving these superpowers, the topic seems to resurface.
It is true that nuclear bombs were used on populated cities at the end of World War 2. But this came at a time when the United States was the only nation to yield such a destructive weapon, making Axis powers unable to retaliate.
The potential for harm is significantly higher now when we factor in the fact that there are nearly 12,705 nuclear warheads in the world. And it is theorized that a nuclear war can have a cooling effect on Earth because of the dust and smoke a catastrophic event of this magnitude would create. In this episode of Imagine That, we dive deep into the possibility of a Nuclear Winter and if humanity would survive this event or not.

For any doubters consider this. If you take into account the fact we survived the ice age droughts and everything else mother nature threw at us it is fair to say we are a lot like cockroaches. We are not that easy to exterminate. Now that's not to downplay a nuclear holocaust or winter because there is no getting around that it will be survival of the fittest and it would make the ice age look like a cake walk no argument there, but I think it would be too easy to say it would be our own extinction. I think that underestimates our natural instinct for self preservation. The way I see it Sun Tzu refers to these types of events as "Death Ground". He said that once on death ground whatever a person was is transformed into the ultimate warrior. I am paraphrasing of course but he is referring to that same instinct. If we are in a predicament where our survival means everything our tendency is to go above and beyond what most would expect. If you ever heard a story of people who beat the odds to survive well there you go, a proof of concept.

I agree. While humans are not that great at threat management we’re really good at adaptability. While undoubtably a nuclear war and winter would probably lead to the deaths of the majority of humanity, it’s likely that somewhere somehow a large enough group of humans would survive. Add on to the fact of technology, although much would be forgotten and lost we would not be starting again from scratch. Add the widespread nature of humanity and finally human ‘proclivity’ for reproduction, undoubtably there would still be reproduction. Even in a reduced manor. Once again, a nuclear winter would be hell. Add the radiation, human conflict and all other factors. Despite this humanity would still likely survive simply due to the fact humanity would do anything to survive, add our knowledge and technology (even greatly reduced) that is a very dangerous combination.
The species that survive mass extinctions are normally small, generalists and herbivores. While humans are apex predators, we are smaller than many (although still large enough for there to be problems), most defiantly generalists and omnivores (so best of predation and herbivores). Add highly social, complex problem solving and sheer spite and intelligence. I think it’s highly likely humanity would survive a mass extinction (even a nuclear winter) and live to tell the tale, still dominating the new world.

Is it possible to do a survival analysis in nuclear winter?
Like the engineering needed to live in an underground bunker, how to generate power, air filtration, sanitation, water recycling, and then if there's power, how to generate food in underground hydroponics etc etc?
Is it possible to build underground networks like ant homes?

    • @syd1764
      @syd1764 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Bunkers are usually not built to hold life for 25+ years to be honest. The idea of the underground bunker is to support life for a few months up to a few years. Most I would say could hold life for 5-6 years if you prepare it right. I think if you really wanted to you can custom design a bunker to support long term life. But eventually the air will be safe enough for you to come out (which trust me you will be begging to leave). There are a couple of bunker companies on here who have awesome videos explaining all the engineering behind it.

Glad you asked this. Saved me from typing it!
If we are looking at Mars/ lunar bases it stands to reason that “bunkers” or arks are on standby to enable a proportion of society to live for 25 years without the sun.
It stands to reason? There is no reason here though. Unless those society members have been preselected.
So of the 8 billion population take the top 10 major cities/ govts. Put 100 in each bunker.
That’s 1000 worldwide. Could that population feasibly grow by a factor of 10 in 25 years?
So say 10k emerge from those bunkers? Can agriculture and any saved livestock be kickstarted on a post irradiated world?
Population drop from 8 billion to 10-20k. Enough for the Human Race to be rebooted?

An objective look points to the reality question of when. A nuclear war is inevitable given the ongoing rising trend of authoritarianism and the erosion of democracies through continuous weakening in the separation of powers and the undermining of rule-of-law across the world. Smart and able people are unfortunately switching to the private sector increasingly leaving politics to the unconsciously incompetent. Nevertheless given how hardy life can be, human kind will still survive along with a few other forms of life in a small way and restart civilisation on earth.

Of course we could. As long as we have the ability to generate power, and clean drinking water, we could survive indefinitely with the right preparation. The idea that humanity wouldn't find a way to adapt and survive, given our current state of technology, is ridiculous.

They base this assumption on nothing actually but continuity of operations plans assume the system wouldn't collapse. In fact plans have vague post-nuke use ideas about survival including preserving a nuke arsenal for future deterrence. How realistic these plans are and whether the drafters themselves believe in them is another matter. These plans cannot account for basic stuff like whether your currency is still traded on the markets. The US can afford its spending because the dollar is the reserve currency. What happens if it ends up worthless cannot be realistically mitigated. But survival plans don't take this into account. They can't since it might be interpreted as weakness.
