If I choose a channels, lets say channel 4 and I have my daughter also on channel 4 then we can communicate. But how do I make sure that no one else can hear our conversation because if someone else in the area range is also on the same channel they can listen to our conversations right?

On my boat I would love to have us three wearing headsets (mic + ear) so we can talk to each other all the time whilst docking. Would this radio work for that purpose?

Thanks for this Dan. We actually bought some in Florida (we can use them here as well). They were particularly useful for when we went to Walmart. Hubby was always wandering off into the car parts aisle and it was a good way of keeping in touch instead of using a washing line to keep him in check lol (only joking) But they are a handy little gadget. My grandchildren used them when we all went camping so if there was a problem they could tell us about it

Great video Dan. Have you checked the legal situation with these regarding PMR446 regulations? I know some of the Baofeng radios on Amazon were arriving programmed with fire service UHF channels a few years ago, and one wouldn't want to fall foul of the law!

Great vid. Rich and I have had a pair of walkie talkies for several years now and have used them so often even when he has been working in his shed ....and of course they were great on the Narrow boat. Miraculously Rich decided a mobile phone might be a good idea (as emergency after I had the stroke) unfortunately as we are on a seasonal pitch with very bad phone signal, we can't use our mobiles so we use the walkie talkies instead. This way we can each have our freedom. He can go fishing and I can go out and about on my mobility scooter. We would be lost without them as I would be too afraid to be on my own. I would urge anyone to get a set as they are invaluable when the phone signal is bad, which is surprisingly often when you get off the main roads in this country! -Lin

OMG! I wasn’t expecting that! Nearly wet myself! Lol! I bought some of those at Christmas when I saw your purchase and then bought another pair off eBay for £16 so I have set of four now! They are brilliant. I do hear rumours though that they aren’t strictly legal for our airwaves but for what I’ll be doing with them I’ll risk it! Lol!

You forgot to mention that (a) these ship with frequencies programmed into them that are illegal to use in Europe, the UK or the USA unless you have an amateur radio licence, and (b) they are illegal to use even if you program them with PMR frequencies because they put out too much power. I'm not the radio police and I'm not in the business of telling people what to do, but you should at least tell people the legal position so they can decide for themselves if they want to risk it.

Just a safety tip. When reversing keep a continuous broadcast. On the heritage railway I voluteer on when setting back a train, 8 coaches are a bit longer than a van admittedly, we send "keep coming" every 5 to 10 seconds. If the driver doesss not get the call they will stop. Stops getting run over if you fall over

Good video Dan. some of the amazon reviews are saying they are not on the UK PMR446 frequencies and have to be reprogrammed, is this something you have noticed? Have you reprogrammed your radios?

Not sure right of the top of my head what frequencies and laws ya'll have over there but I can say they do not come programmed to anything legal in the US. They are also illegal here because they are over powered to be used on the license free frequencies here. So even if they are programmed they are still not legal to use here.
All the disclaimer crap out of the way we have a few different baofengs we use on out farm. The 888 are great to hand to the kids because they are so cheap it's really not a problem if they get destroyed. Personally I like my uv-82 and being able to tune to 2 different frequencies at once.

  • @georgebarnes8163
    @georgebarnes8163 ปีที่แล้ว

You can buy them with USB base chargers or you can buy the same radio (888H) which does not come with a base charger, they charge via a micro USB socket on the set but will also charge via a base charger if you already have one, this allows charging from a cigarette lighter socket in a car plus other options such as USB solar panels.

We used to use two ways when taking my mum away on her hols. Because she was too unsure of towing herself my partner would fallow in mums car and I would to cvan in our car. Many times we would get separated and the radios came in handy to let each other know where we were. Also if we needed to stop for any reason. 🖒🌝

Did you know you can get a fold-up spade that has a torch light built in.
Only use I can think of for that is when I'm burying a body on the moors.
There is an app for phones that is a walkie talkie, never used one so I don't know what they are like.

Enjoyable video, thanks for posting. Great use of two way radios. However, interesting choice of radio as they have not been approved for use on PMR and do not comply with PMR446 regulations. There is a common misconception that just because a radio can be programmed to operate on PMR frequencies they are then legal to use without a licence; they are not.
As part of its CE declaration the manufacturer must declare the radio to be compliant with PMR regulations and it must be supplied in accordance with the regulations. As such, these radios may only be used by licensed radio amateurs or licensed business users within the conditions of their licence.
You often hear “they must be reprogrammed to legal frequencies”. OFCOM is quite clear that there are no unlicensed bands in the UK, although equipment may be used on certain frequencies licence exempt as long as they have been approved to do so. Whilst this radio has a CE mark and can be sold in the UK it has not been specifically approved to be used licence exempt on PMR, and cannot be as it exceeds the PMR regulations on output power.
Handheld radios are great for camping and for the kids, and there are plenty of legal, approved PMR radios to choose from for this.
The Far East import radios tend to be bought because they are cheap, but whilst it is unlikely that there will be any issues using these radios on PMR frequencies people buying these radios should be aware that they may be at risk of prosecution if they are found using them. Unfortunately the manufacturers of this and similar radios do not always make this clear!

@@countryside_guy The police moved to Tetra Airwave years ago, however the fire service still use analog frequencies in the 462 MHz range. The legal limit for license free PMR446 is 500mW erp. They should be fine on UK gen 449 or other business frequencies of the license holder or 70cms Amateur frequencies for Ham Radio license holders.

Hello, mate, and thanks for the review. The one thing you didn't touch on and is the greatest interest to potential buyers is range. How far can one expect to go, on average, or the least? Yes, I know it differs with terrain, but I'm just looking for a number. Can it go a mile? A half mile? Just a demonstration would be nice. Anyway, sorry about Herod. He was a decent bloke, 'cept when he'd had a few, but no one's perfect. 🔹🌞🌛✨

These radio do not comply with Ofcom PMR446 frequencies and as such are illegal to use. the 400-470 frequencies they come with are designated for Marine band and if near the cost you could interfere with shipping putting live at risk. At the minimum re-program (look online) to the UK PMR446 frequencies. You will still need a Business licence to legally operate. Just saying :)

Brilliant 👍 we use 2 Walkie talkies ( but not this ones) on site to keep track of the grand kids, it's very funny when other families end up on the same channel and it descends into good humoured chaos. They are not very good car to car if your travelling in convoy. Ours have a range of about 1000m but they are line of sight. I have a very funny tale about " broadsword calling Danny boy" but that can keep for another day. Big👍

Hi, no its not to discharge the battery - there is not sufficient load to discharge the battery with just an LED, nor is there a bleed resistor to take the power. In actual fact its a poorly designed charger circuit. the addition of a diode, a capacitor and a couple of resistors would prevent this and vastly improve the charger.
      Thanks for your thoughts though.
      Take care

Oops forgot to add - Ours have been reprogrammed and we have a business light licence for them (think it was £75.00 for 5 years from offcom) We use them for work as well. For anyone thinking about it there are plenty of views /advice on how to use/program and what frequencies to use them, on google.. as they transit over 0.5 w they aren't legal without a licence... If you want a radio that is to be used at close ish range a normal Motorola from Maplins (or similar) as it transmits below 0.5 w and does not lead a licence.

I have these radios (US version). I don't know what UK regulations are, but these radios usually come programmed with all sorts of out of band frequencies that technically are not legal in most countries. You could be causing harmful interference if not reprogrammed. You can pickup a cheap programming cable for these and download the Baofeng software or use an open source program called Chirp to download the current freqs change them to legal frequencies. There are plenty of videos on TH-cam on how to do this. Stay safe.

The frequency on these are illegal to use without an amature license in the UK but they can be reprogrammed to the legal 10 pmr frequencies

the PMR frequencies they operate on are perfectly legal and do not require a licence, what makes them illegal in the UK is their power output which exceeds the max 1/2 watt allowed.@@TheStellanator
