Ritual Japanese Archery or Kyudo in Kyoto

- The ritual or ceremonial side of Japanese archery or Kyudo. At the Shimogamo Shinto Shrine, the oldest and one of the largest Shinto temples in Kyoto, hundreds of Japanese archers gather in a Shinto ceremony to ward off evil spirits that live outside the temple.
The archer shoots a "whistling" arrow called Kabura-ya over the roof of the enormous temple gate. The whistling sound wards off evil spirits that collect outside the gate and in the forest beyond. Shinto religion can be seen in many aspects of martial arts in Japan, and in the making of Samurai swords.

How do they look so serious yet so calm and peaceful
Kyudo is a martial art. Its not necessarily about hitting the target. More important is the form. Very meditative. (But yes... Certainly helps to hit the center for some good motivation lol)
Combination of Shintoism, Buddhism, and Bushido. Also these people are absolutely loving the fact that they get to partake in this traditional ceremony with ancient roots.

I love the singing sound as the arrow left the bow.....
so I've rewatched this video over 25 times :D
I started making a video game about Japanese culture.
you should try watch anime called tsurune, it's about a guy who liked that sound so much and tsurune is what the sound when the arrow being shot called.
It's called a Kabura-ya or "turnip arrow". There's actually a carved wooden whistle on the end of the shaft. The sound of the arrow is supposed to banish evil sprits in Shinto rituals.
Absolutely beautiful art and culture
We agree with you! Thank you for your comment.

It's absolutely beautiful culture, appreciated for unloading this tradition.

Kyudo is one of my favorite traditions. I'd love to be able to learn it one day.
I learned it with one of those suction cup bow and arrows when I was like 7 - not a lot of skill required to shoot an arrow over a house 🤡
@@865glockstar You haven't done Kyudo then. It's completely different than the archery you're referring to. Get a real Kyudo bow and try to draw that normally.
Those bows are stiff as fck

I love this about Japan and china. They still celebrate thousand year old traditions even like the samurai
Only Japan and some still left in Taiwan. The commies on mainland china destroyed all of the tradition and history. Most of the "history" and "rituals" you see in china are nothing more than cheap remakes and fan fiction.
The Romans and Christianity disturbed the old heathen traditions of Europa, some surprisingly survived through it but are today under attack by woke culture, mass migration and the EUSSR.
Being Modern..yet Respectful for their Unique Cultural Tradition..❤❤❤❤❤

Everything about Japan is just magnificent
December 13, 1937. nanking, china. If one thing about Japan isn't magnificent, its their history.
@@itcaboi1707 well countries like USA certainly can't be proud of some of their history either, every country had its dark spots through time

Curiously, the events described in Iris Chan's Nanjin novel are exactly the same as those that occurred during the CCP's invasion of Tibet and Tongzhou Incident ( victims were Japanese and Koreans.)
Also, a Japanese researcher who read her book pointed out the lies in Chan's claims, but she never replied.
Is there a reason why she Can't reply?😂
Magnifical!

One of my regrets in life was not doing this in Kyoto. I tried. I even signed up for archery at a local club in Kyoto city, when I worked there, but I was disappointed when I saw it was Olympic style archery and not Kyudo.

I love how they don't shoot at anything.

I hope the arrow had a specific landing spot XD

What is that thing they are holding ? The ones in the white kimono
they holds 笏 "shaku "
- flat wooden or ivory baton carried in the right hand when in ceremonial imperial or Shinto garb.
old old people used to use it as a memorandum, now, it is a part of formal dress.
That is discipline. RESPECT.

What does all these means
Kaburaya is an arrow that was fired into the sky after the generals announced their names during the Sengoku period, and was used as a signal for battle. It has the meaning of "first arrow" and has been valued as a lucky charm for a new start. It is also popular as a decorative arrow, as the sound it makes is said to ward off evil spirits and purify the place.
Sorry for the machine translation
missed again...
I get it, it takes your whole to take one shot….at least they won’t lose many arrows
This isn't kyudo at all. It is a spiritual rite to cleanse evil from an area. The "whistling" arrow is believed to chase and scare away evil spirits.
They all seem to be HYPNOTISED
Let's hope that there was no one on the other side of that building !! Aaagghh !!
Did he kill the gardener raking stones on the other side of the house?
Thats not a bow , its a freaking sniper .
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🌹
Kyudo is not ritual, it’s a legit martial art meant to be used in war. It’s a “do” not a “jutsu”.
