Edit: I get that there's emotional attachments to anything people are close with, but it's selfish to think that respect is only given to those you are emotionally attached to. The most unrealistic thing about this was no one complaining about the smell due to the body decomposition. Imagine, if the smell of a real size body after 3 days of death is awful what about a giant's body?! That got me wondering, there's no way people would be there like nothing, not with the smell...there's no way.

a lot of people in these comments are like "wow, it says a lot about society because this is what totally would happen"... but it wouldn't happen. I have zero idea why people are insisting it would happen or people would treat this situation this way, even if there wasn't a terrible smell. The far more realistic outcome is everyone would be frightened of it and/or attach religious and spiritual significance to it. If we were being even more realistic, nobody would be able to even go near it because the government would have closed it off.

The Drowned Giant was originally a short story by JG Ballard, the same person who wrote "High Rise" (made into a 2015 film with Tom Hiddleston), and "The Drowned World".
It is about human reaction to death and isn't really supposed to reflect the real world at all because it's about human psychology and our reaction to death.

If this happened in real life, there is no way that there would be just one scientist that is assigned to this and to just 'keep tabs on it'. The entire beach would be sectioned off and quarantined and there would be an entire camp of scientists and technicians working on studying the giant and collecting tissue samples 24/7. Eventually the body would get chopped up and the parts taken away to a more established facility where they'd likely preserve them for further study.

To understand the movie you can't take it too literally, the giant is actually a washed up whale. Of course we wouldn't treat an actual giant like this but when it's just a whale, sure.
I think that the reason a whale is portrayed as a human, is because we see through Steven's point of view, to him this magnificent beast is worth as much, if not more than the humans. So he just thinks of it as a human, like him, instead of a washed up whale.

This is absolutely devastating and heartbreaking. This giant's body was completely disrespected all the way. People climbing and jumping on the body, the graffiti and slurs drawn on him, his body being completely dismembered and amputated and then his bones and body parts displayed everywhere around the town. It's honestly really disgusting and shameful. If I was the main guy I would've stepped in and tried to save the body. No way in hell will I let a creature's body be disrespected like that. We wouldn't let beached whales be treated that way. I wouldn't let the same thing for a mythological creature.
Also it took me minutes into the video to realize that this is entirely animation. Obviously I knew the Giant is animated but the other humans looked so life like that it fooled me. The animations is really good.

This is an analysis of the sad reality of how we get remembered after we are gone. The memories regarding us gets altered, twisted, misinterpreted and sometimes completely changed. But unfortunately a time comes when those caricatures of ourselves are the only evidence left of the fact that we once were.

I like to imagine the main character is imagining a beached whale as his dead son. His son might have been a celebrity who succumbed to drug addiction which is symbolized by him decomposing, this makes his father feel less of a connection to his son. The graffiti represents how people treated him as a commodity, it's like social media hate-posts. His legacy is represented after he fully decomposes and his bones are collected by the towns people, he's still treated as a commodity, he's just no longer the center of attention. Like the video mentioned; he's now a myth/legend.

It saddens me how instead of being respectful of someone that passed away people graffiti, amputate, and play on it. That's just sick and demonic honestly. Other then that I dont think something as huge as this in real life would have been a trend that just faded away so quickly. There would be so many things people would be trying to discover and things we would be realizing. It would probably start a panic attack as well for many people as well. I remember hearing of how someone hacked into a radio section and pretended there would be an alien invasion, you had many people killing themselves and their family members. Something like this would invoke panic in many crazy people too. It wouldnt have been this calm and peaceful. Only explanation would be that they werent in the u.s.😂

They weren't using it to save lives. Your comment only works for humans who properly did what they were supposed to towards a deceased corpse. That was never shown within the movie. And the experiments performed on the giant more then likely would be based on what exactly it is, how similar it's DNA is to humans it's age, and so forth. The odds of someone using it to save a life would be low.

  • @cassyngakasi

Welp, for me, the giant is actually you. The people is the society making fun of you and tearing you apart.
You(the giant) drowned in sadness or pain or whatever stresses you that is caused by the society, for example, body shaming.
Since you already drowned and died inside, the society starts making fun of you and tearing you into pieces. They don't care and still continue to do it.
The stages of decaying is actually the stages of you changing into someone you don't want to be, mentally losing the real you.
The protagonists in this episode is actually still you, watching as the people slowly kill you more. You're the only one who feel empathy upon yourself.
The bones are the pieces you can never connect.
That's the way I understand this, and I also accept the opinion of others.

That's also partially how I feel upon watching this. The fish in the giant's hands, the giant's gentle features, the fact this adult giant never shown itself nor caused any harm. In a way this giant seems like a greater being worthy of more than us humans. But watching people playing, humiliate and degrade the giant makes me feel... sad. Because that's exactly what we would do to things other than giants. We will ridicule the greatest things and make them into myths. Makes me wonder what the natural state of humans are suppose to be? Good? Evil? The way they treated the giant.. it was neither.. playing and doing things to a body that isn't alive viewed as a robot seem unimportant. But.. with those with a mind and soul, we recognize respect. Maybe the giant should've been buried. Maybe the government should've taken the giant for research, but the slow decay, the way humans marvel then get uninterested. Do we even have values as a species anymore? We destroy, we ridicule, we turn great beings into myths. Like the millions of Native Americans that once freely roamed North America, reduced to a tiny minority.
It's much more better to forget and ignore these things, that way we won't burden our minds, but in the back of my mind I wish things were different. I wonder what'll happen if we're extinct and a new life form replaces us. Will they mock us? Will they respect us? Will they forget us? ... no... we were here, just weird beings that came into existence.

      Wrong.
The Drowned Giant was originally a short story by JG Ballard, the same person who wrote "High Rise" (made into a 2015 film with Tom Hiddleston), and "The Drowned World".
It is about human reaction to death and isn't really supposed to reflect the real world at all because it's about human psychology and our reaction to death.

personally, this speaks to us on a deeper level, like Adam mentioned one day we will pass away, perhaps if we made some good connections in some people's memories and in their stories our existence may live on. The pics, the media that we chose, the songs that we liked, the things that we did in our own past times, that also is experienced by the most closest to us, some friends, parents and maybe siblings and if possible some relatives, maybe on the most deepest levels, only 10 people know us throughout our lives. whether it's our parents, spouse, children and friends and no one else beyond. with our passing, remains our memories and the stories of ours, and that too will wither away, with time as our own children, their children and subsequently our traces vanish off of the earth in the long run, maybe somehow a pic of ours smiling chilling with the boys at the beach is found at the beach 100 years later buried but now found. and the one that finds it will wonder about that pic, the people in the pic that lived, before it becomes some part of some museum that preserves it for the next generation to visit and look at the lives lived by. So, what is the point of living such a life where u r only living. perhaps the motive of life is to still doing all these things, with and to all these people, and perhaps to do it so well, that it reaches most people, that it helps most of them, and maybe lives on, to create and expedite something, a legacy that lives and improves for the people. that is itself a very symbol of what we have been, us as humans. Our humanity.

Ofcourse to avoid panic they don't tell us but they give us a hint through these movies and series, there's a lot we don't know and what we know is less than a particle of sand.
