    I’ve been tying for a while, & you are right. You aren’t likely to save money tying your own flies, but it is very enjoyable. I was given a kit while I was laid up after an operation & started trying to tie. I was so happy after catching my first fish on 1 of my own flies that I started jumping up & down & hollering, until I realized I was in a big patch of poison ivy. Good that I had waders on. Tying your own is satisfying & has the benefit of letting you tie the fly you need when all the shops are out of stock.

      Lesson learned. Don't jump up and down hollering in a big patch of poison ivy......without waders. Thanks for sharing.

    Perfect timing! I just picked up an inexpensive vise for this exact reason. Weather has been awful in Buffalo and I thought fly tying would be a good way to pass the junk weather.
    Got a C-clamp vise and plan to build a small tabletop for it. I’ll have to email a picture of the finished product and then pick up this kit along with one of the Loon tool packages I saw on your website!

    This is the material kit I started with, and I will attest that is is a great starter kit. All the materials that come in the kit are very good quality and are all top of the line since everything is coming from hareline and veevus. You're going to tie quite a few flies (a lot more than the 10 or 20 flies with other kits because you've ran out of material). As for saving money tying your own flies, I think it's all in perspective. The upfront cost of accumulating materials and tools can run the cost up, but in the long run, many materials will last you years. If when you're fishing, you save the flies that got chewed up and salvage beads, and non bent hooks etc. It'll save some money by reusing them. Or, like me, you belong to a club or other fly fishing groups, and make friends with tiers that have been doing it much longer than you, many of them are very generous and may give you materials. I know I have tons of dubbing, hackle, and fur/hair patches that I don't think I'll ever buy them again (or at least until I'm too old to fish anymore.).

    One more reason to tie your own flies. While my wife doesn’t have an interest in fishing, she loves the idea of tying flies with me.! She says it fulfills the “arts & craft” urge she has from her youth. Who knows where this will lead 😊?

    I tied flies for years, but I haven't done any tying for about 7 or 8 years now. My basement has a habit of flooding, and the last time it happened I had to throw out my entire tackle box full of hooks and threads, probably about $1,000 worth of stuff, and my homeowners insurance wouldn't cover the loss. Probably lost over 100 books and 300+ old vinyl lps.

    So true, you don't tie to save money. Just nothing like catching a fish on a fly you tied.

    True statement: If you are tying flies only for your own use, you won't save money tying your own flies. The only good reason to tie for your own use is because you want to catch fish on flies you tied yourself.

      Kebari style flies look cheap enough. Could probably use feathers you find outside even. Fish it Tenkara style, dapping with a cane rod. What could be cheaper?

  • @farmfishandfreedom2933

    Dang. Sure wish I wouldn’t have got the wapsi kit. Seems a little over priced for what you get. This one would have been perfect. Oh well. Lol

    • @Madriveroutfitters
      @Madriveroutfitters  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This one doesn't have tools and such though. Call the shop and see if they'll take that one back? They can probably work something out. They are good folks.

    • @farmfishandfreedom2933
      @farmfishandfreedom2933 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No I wouldn’t do that. It has worked just fine for me. Tied a lot of flies out of it. Caught a lot of fish on them. But thank you!

    why is it that so many fly ty vids are about trout fishing . there are so many other types of fish out there to ty flys for, it would to see some vids on them. not every body fishes for trout, i personally don't care for cold water and slick rocks, and i have experienced both
