Why it's TIME to DECIDE: 2018 Ford Raptor or 2014 Raptor? - Raiti's Rides

  • This is one of the most detailed side by side comparisons of the first GEN & second GEN Raptors. The 2018 Ford Raptor broke away from the first generation by Ford switching to the 3.5 V6 EcoBoost mated to a 10 Speed transmission. With all updated sheet metal and interior plus the 450 HP lurking under the hood Ford thought the fans would be happy. The problem is many people miss the 6.2 V8 mated to the 6 speed gearbox in their Ford Raptor. Find out all the details to see which way you decide!

As my uncle says, “full-sized trucks with a V6 are like a man with one testicle. It works but it’s really weird.”
I own a Gen 1 and won’t buy another Raptor until I’m in a position to buy the upcoming Raptor R, which will have a V8.

I own a 2013 Gen 1 6.2L Raptor and love the truck. Never had an issue and it’s rock solid. I test drove the 2018 Raptor and while I liked it, the engine sounded like a weed eater. It had plenty of power but each time I stepped on the gas it made me cringe. The interior is nice on the 2018 and I like the look, but for me the V6 Eco Boost was the deal killer. I’ll buy a new Raptor tomorrow if it comes in a 7.0L v8. In the meantime, my current Raptor is perfect.

Yes my 2014 does have the step but one thing that’s kinda annoying about them is that it rattles, when you have the back slider window open you can hear the handle shaking around over bumps.

I own a special edition 2014 Ruby Red Metallic Raptor. It basically like the one in the video. It is amazing what it can do. I highly recommend the 1st gen if budget is a concern. Personally , I think the 1st gen curved body work looks better than the squared look of the new raptors

yeah I have 2014 blue one with 48 000 km, I love my bebe hehehehe. I guess the new one might be technically more advanced, but the budget is important as well. I agree with you Omar that the first gen looks more aggressive than new Raptors. They look sort of GMC for me.

As a Ford mechanic that ecoboost twin turbo engine in 2nd Gen is garbage it won't last like the 6.2l engine from the 1st Gen I should know because I did work quite often it's either the engine is blown or one of the turbo need to be replace... If you in the market on getting a raptor stay away with those ecoboost.

HI Joe, I enjoy your videos but you are incorrect about a few things- The tailgate step was available as an option on the Gen 1 Raptor so it's not unique to the Gen 2. Also, there was a very nice black hood decal that was available for the Gen1 which, in most people's opinion, looks better than the 2 black stripes you see in the Gen 2 hood decal option.
While the Gen2 is a nice progression to the Gen1, the Gen1 is a timeless classic and will always hold a place in automotive history and be an enthusiasts truck for decades to come.. especially with that amazing 6.2L V8 N/A motor.
Great review, and first one I've seen side-by-side like this, I've seen a ton of Raptor reviews and even with all that I found yours interesting all the way through.

Ford missed a good chance to put the V6 Ecoboost engine into the Mustang

I have a 2014 raptor that I have owned since new, the thing has been bulletproof and I have definitely put it through its paces. The new one I heard has had inter cooler problems with condensation sucking into the motor. Plus I keep hearing how much better the gen 2 suspension is, but why when I look up buying the gen 2 rear shocks and front coil overs I can find them new all day long for 600 bucks and the gen 1 suspension is still going for almost 2 grand. If they’re so good, why are they selling for so cheap?

There hasn't been any intercooler issues with the 2nd gen Raptor. There were some IC issues with the first gen EcoBoost engines but those were rectified well before the 2nd gen raptor was released, which actually has a 2nd gen EB motor that was never plagued with that problem.

GEN 1 is a sleeker looking truck, new one is just has too many sharp angles and is far too indistinguishable from the new F150. When you see a Gen 1 Raptor, you know its a raptor. New Raptor just looks and feels like another F150 option like Lariat or HD edition.. Last point, when i think full size truck, i think and want V8.. Gen 1 all day

Absolutely 2014 rambling V8 for me any day but, in a 2018/2019 shell.
Whats unique about the Raptor is its performance (V8) without that lawnmower sound,
of the (V6)... it defeat the purpose and ethics of the customer who buys it.... hope Ford
