  • The Cloud of Unknowing, written by an unknown Catholic priest or monk in the late 14th century C.E. in England’s East Midland area and addressed to an unnamed student, has been read, studied, and used as a meditation manual by countless students of meditation for centuries. In this presentation, Dr. Acevedo Butcher explores its enduring nature from a linguistic framework as well as from a practical standpoint offering down-to-earth advice for anyone wanting to learn how to deepen their meditation practice.
    Carmen Acevedo Butcher has a Ph.D. in Medieval Studies from the University of Georgia, where John Algeo, Ph.D., past president of The Theosophical Society in America, was her major professor. A Carnegie Foundation Professor of the Year and Fulbright Senior Lecturer, she currently teaches at the University of California, Berkeley, in the College Writing Programs.
