can you get into any RC racing for cheap? or do they all need 1k cars?

A good second-hand buggy would be around £100-£250 (depending how new and what comes with it). Then you have all the ancillaries (batteries, controller, charger). Depending how fortunate you get with the second-hand market - you could get a basic setup for £200-300. New - probably £400-600. For 1/8th - then yes; you'd be looking more towards the £1000 mark.
