    Not guna lie . I was about 9 I rode it . I was split from my family because of crowds
    . I ended up sitting next to strangers who both grabbed my hand through fear. At that time it was the scariest thing I had ever encountered , after the ride ended a woman next to me took my hand and took me outside I had told her I couldn’t find my family and she proceeded to try and take me out of the park to meet “her husband “ and would come back later with me to find my parents . Luckily a man had noticed me looking distressed and upset , with my British accent and her thick southern American accent knew something was off . He approached and fought over who was taking me he threatened her with violence and she let me go , he won and took me to the nearest cast member who after an hour found my family . I dread to think what would of happened if that American guy had not helped me .

      @Benji Fox - When I was barely five years old, I briefly got separated from my dad at a little storefront grocery. This was in Latin America, where little storefront shops were common; there usually wasn’t a door into them, per se … they rather opened right onto the sidewalk, and at night they’d be sealed off from the sidewalk by lowering a big metal grate.
      So while Dad was shrouded somewhere in the unlit store‘s back aisles, this weather-hewn, rough-skinned older man, wearing shabby clothes but smiling quite kindly at me, revealing a few missing teeth, took me by the hand and-since I was a trusting young fool-led me right past the cashier’s post and out of the store, into the midday sunlight and onto the street … at which point I felt my dad grab my arm and heard him shout my name; I looked up, and it seemed Dad had bolted out from inside the store and grabbed me, yelling in fear. The older dude disappeared immediately down the crowded sidewalk.
      For the rest of my childhood, while my parents weren’t overprotective by a long shot, my mom did coach me extensively-and graphically!-against strangers, and against kidnapping, and about what happens to children who are kidnapped. (In fact, about three years later, after we’d moved to a different part of the city, an older boy-maybe twelve?-disappeared from one of the area’s three bilingual private schools, and three weeks later his body was found in the shopping center we frequented, decomposing in its water tank, the belt he‘d been strangled with still around his neck … so I didn’t need warning twice, really: for many years, in my mind I‘d see his body in the water, undiscovered for weeks, every night as I tried to sleep.)
      The funny thing is, I really didn’t put two-and-two together until I was about ten, when I realized “Holy crap, was that some dude trying to make off with me??” My parents had never again mentioned it to me outright. So until I puzzled it out for myself, it was just a really peculiar memory I’d turn over in my head once in a while, and which-since it made me uneasy-I’d push right back out of my thoughts again. And I still can’t help but mostly see it that way: rather matter-of-factly, for a moment … before pushing it out of my thoughts altogether.
      But-and this is the only reason I typed all this at you-it’s hard not to play what-if, isn’t it? I mean, even despite trying actively NOT to think about it. I know I turn that memory over in my head at least once a week … and it’s been decades.
      It feels surreal, doesn’t it?

    I went on this in the late 90's when I was 10 years old with my 6yr old brother and two older siblings. It was scary but didn't upset any of us. Not all kids are built the same. We loved it. Core memory.

    • @medea27
      @medea27 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Agreed. There's plenty of kids who enjoy more mature rides without being scared or scarred for life... and plenty of adults who get more scared than the kids! It's really up to the parents to be making informed choices about what their kids can tolerate.... I grew up reading Stephen King & loving movies like the Alien franchise, while one of my close friends had nightmares for a month after playing an hour of the first Resident Evil game! Wish I could have experienced this ride.

    Can't believe Tomorrowland in California has so few attractions when SciFi is literally the best genre. Especially retro sci-fi from the 50's all the way through the 90's. Looks like the genre started taking itself too seriously in the 2000's and forgot how to have fun. We got Star Wars land which is neat but it's a very specific single take on the genre.

    Pretty sure I got to see the original version. We went when it was pretty new and it was advertised in all the pamphlets and everything. I certainly remember the Phil Hartman voice over the other one. I remember being really confused about what it was because of the people in the picture wearing the shoulder restraint and thinking it was some sort of roller coaster or something.

    • @ralfmaximus4295
      @ralfmaximus4295 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We definitely saw the Phil Hartman version and liked it! The pacing & tone seemed fine to us; a nice misdirect. But both my wife and I thought it was too intense for little kids. And yeah, we saw some wee ones who did NOT enjoy themselves.
      The next time we visited, AE was closed for the refurbishment which was puzzling at the time.. it was a brand new ride. Why close it so soon??
      Then in 1995 we saw the Tim Curry version + new warning signage about intensity and everything clicked. That was the last time we did AE though, as it seemed a diminishment over the first iteration. Stitch's Great Escape was... uh, a mistake. But understandable.

Wind would blow as you heard the alien fly around the room and then...The shoulder braces that lowered over you would move down as though it landed on the back of your seat. I loved Alien Encounter, also the preshow! One thing you forgot to mention, I think, was that there were angled mirrors under the transporter chambers in the preshow area, that way it looked like the chambers were just standing on legs and nothing between them, which made the disappearing / appearing effect even better.
    Also, I always wondered if that was a cast member up there shining the light around or maybe a light on a robotic arm.
    I also remember there were some tubes in the headrest, with feather-like endings that came out and moved around when air was blown through them. That way it felt as if something just had touched your head. (Similiar to the mice under the seats in "Honey I shrunk the Audience). But maybe this effect was only added when they changed it to Stitch Encounter.

    • @AmusementLabs
      @AmusementLabs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did notice the mirror part of the base, but I was too far along in the editing process to be able to carve out the space to include it unfortunately.
      As for the little air tubes Wiki did mention something like that, but misscharacterized what it was used for and given the age of the attraction it was fairly hard to track down any good quality photos of the heardrests.

    For me this is one of the best rides in WDW ever, on my 1st visit to WDW back in '96. After all these years I still wonder at the fantastic effects the ride had. It was almost 15 years later before I had the chance to go back to WDW again but sadly the ride already closed. At least I got on it once.

    The beginning of this video was GREAT! Loved the intro. I’ve seen the Defunctland video on this but getting a more in-depth breakdown of how the thing actually worked was awesome!
    Edit: boy, I hated the split second close-up of the fried alien when you’re talking about the pre-show teleportation tube. Those eyes 😳

    I love this attraction. I went as a kid around opening day of the Tim Curry version. I would later end up working TLand attractions at the time of closing. The final show with all CMs after park closing is one of my favourite memories working there.

    They unleashed one of the best themed experiences ever, and the world literally wasn't ready for it. It was too much for them and Disney didn't know what to do with it. They should have kept it and told their audience that they'd eventually appreciate it.

    Love this channel, I have always wondered how the rides worked and I’m glad I found the perfect place to learn and appreciate this complex engineering.
    It would be awesome if one day you could cover Jurassic Park the ride (Hollywood or Orlando)

    This was my favourite ride ever at WDW. I miss it so much! It was one of the few things Eisner did right. IMO, they closed this excellent ride down in order to sell more Lilo & Stich merch.

    This was the first attraction I visited the first time I set foot in the US in 2000 (UK here). I'm gutted it doesn't exist anymore.
    I thought it was amazing. This and 'Dueling Dragons' were my best memories.

    Ok so here’s something weird for you- I went to Disney World as an 11 year old from November 11th to 19th of 1994 and rode this ride. I even got the skippy t shirt and the button that shows the logo and has the logo that changes when you view it from a different angle. I’m looking at old Polaroid pictures of me in line right now. Did they do a soft opening?
    I vividly remember every minute of this ride. I was genuinely traumatized from this ride and to this day I can remember how scared I was!

    I rode this for the 1st time in September 1995. The Cast did something no video or description mentions and I don't know if it was a regular feature or I just got lucky. Anyway. When the light first went out and the theater was totally dark, there was hysterical screaming from someone. The lights came back on and CM's went and comforted a lady with a large hat sitting in an innermost aisle seat. After the CM's "calmed her down," the show continued. After plunging into darkness again, and the show doing it's thing, the screaming restarted and suddenly stopped. When the lights came back on at the end of the show, the lady was gone from the ride as if the Alien had captured/devoured her. I think the big hat was all that was left of her. It freaked out the already freaked out audience even more!!!!!

    I’m sad I never got to ride this, because once I visited for the first time, Stitch was there. However, I definitely would have had a breakdown if I’d been on it as a child. I am disappointed I’ll never get to ride this as an adult, though.
    Edit: “Guests would, say it with me: ‘Exit through the gift shop.’” I laughed so hard. Great video.

I believe it was when I was helping my grandparents move up so he treated me to Disney World the good old memories before my dad passed in 2011 it was actually by far one of the best attraction in my own opinion and I enjoyed it so much my dad and I we went through it again. I never experienced this ride, but I used to have a computer game that showed this show and it TERRIFIED me.
    I did go on the Stitch counter-part and found the seats extremely uncomfortable and at times painful. I couldn’t imagine being on the original - it would’ve been exactly as terrifying as I’d probably imagined lol
