  • In this video, I had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Alan Cowthran, an ENT resident about life as an Otolarynogologist, typical day in the life, and advice for all!
    What is an Otolaryngologist?
    Otolaryngology is the oldest medical specialty in the United States. Otolaryngologists are physicians trained in the medical and surgical management and treatment of patients with diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, throat (ENT), and related structures of the head and neck. They are commonly referred to as ENT physicians.
    What do otolaryngologists treat?
    Otolaryngologists diagnose and manage diseases of the ears, nose, sinuses, larynx (voice box), mouth, and throat, as well as structures of the neck and face
    What education is required?
    Otolaryngologists are ready to start practicing after completing up to 15 years of college and post-graduate training. To qualify for certification by the American Board of Otolaryngology, an applicant must first complete college (four years), medical school (four years), and at least five years of specialty training. Next, the physician must pass the American Board of Otolaryngology examination. In addition, some otolaryngologists pursue a one- or two- year fellowship for more extensive training in one of eight subspecialty areas.
    These subspecialty areas are allergy, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, head and neck, laryngology (throat), otology/neurotology (ears, balance, and tinnitus), pediatric otolaryngology (children), rhinology (nose), and sleep disorders. Some otolaryngologists limit their practices to one of these eight areas.

    I am suffering from empty nose syndrome and this catastrophic disease is not a rare condition. I hope otolaryngologists will focus on elucidating the mechanism of breathing. By this, otolaryngologists may be able to go closer to the treatment of empty nose syndrome.

    My son had his tonsils taken out when he was about 10. Now, he is 20.
    He has vomited periodically (violently) ever since the surgery. Is this
    just a side effect of the tonsillectomy?

    • @sadikadhaan4595

      4 years college undergrad +4 years medical school + 1 year of research year + 5 years residency + 2 years of fellowship. so basically 16 years of study after high school to become a board certified attending ENT. IN SHORT 16 YEARS

    • @isaiahharris3955
      @isaiahharris3955 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sadikadhaan4595 you don’t have to do a research year or fellowship. So it’s really 4 yrs undergrad + 4 yrs medical school + 5 yrs residency. The other stuff is not required but could be a part of your journey. Just posting this for anyone who reads the above comment in the future

      In undergraduate? Either major in a bio/chem major or take the required prereqs to gain admission to medical school. Other than that, courses at that level dont matter as it pertains to ENT.
