Who remembers the big plastic steering wheel spinner drivers would install in their cars back in the day to make turning smooth and effortless? My Uncle Thomas always had one in his Oldsmobiles and as a kid I would marvel as he used his open palm on that plastic steering wheel knob to make turns or parallel park. (If you are under 60 you will have no idea what the hell I am talkin’ about.) Thanks for this fun video which sparked a long-forgotten but pleasant detail from my misspent youth.

The fuel filler is hidden in the chome rear 'fin' panel between taillight and reverse light. They got really good at hiding the fuel filler. No wonder the gas station attendants started drinking so young - they couldn't take the constant pressure of trying to find where the gas nozzle goes.

Oldsmobile’s were durably built premium level cars made to last who’s quality rivaled only Parkard and Cadillac and who’s engine’s emitted a deep burble that rivaled Charlie’s baritone.

In 1961 my dad bought a 1959 Super 88 from a school teacher who was going to Spain to teach English. It was the first car we ever had with AC and carpeted floors. On our first ride we all took our shoes off. I can close my eyes and still feel that carpet under foot. And that Rocket engine was truly fast as hell considering the size and weight it was moving.

Awesome car. That rascal was expensive new and you won't pass another like it when driving
down the road, either. the best part is the story behind the car, too.

Great video and story and how cute was that model! Well now this car brings back memories!!! My Dad purchased this car in blue in the early 60's. He never bought a car new, always used. This is the car I learned to drive in when I was 18 in 1967. Unfortunately this was also the car that was stolen from the parking lot of a Gemco in Los Angeles while my parents were on vacation on my watch :( That was probably the summer of 1967). It was recovered in Compton - stripped. I loved that car. When you post the link to this video on Facebook I will comment and put up a photo of the car under my real name (it's not Wendy, haha, but Irene).

It is possibly more interesting for people from Canada to see these as, the demon rust, took so many of your featured cars? You call them American Cars but the auto pact made them North American, lots of Canadian components as well. Way back in the day we had VW's and then a whole range of cars from Detroit & Southern Ontario. The big three also built some exclusive Canadian Cars. One with an interesting name was the Acadian Beaumont. It was like a Chevelle with fancy trim and sold by Pontiac Dealers. Keep clear of COVID 19. God bless!

1957, Olds made both a Golden Rocket & Super 88 in both sedan & Holiday sedan, which came as a pillarless hardtop or coupe. The Golden Rocket/Super 88 Fiesta wagons also had no pillars. Golden Rocket was base, Super midlevel, & Holiday an option for each. Next up were the longer, top-of-the-line Starfire 98 & its Holiday sedans & coupes. All model lines had the Holiday pillarless "hardtop" sedan & a convertible.
Base: Golden Rocket 88/Golden 88 Holiday Golden Rocket 88 Fiesta
Mid: Super 88/Super 88 Holiday Super 88 Fiesta
    Top: Starfire 98/Starfire 98 Holiday
This year featured gold-sprayed 371” Rocket 88 engine in both four-barrel & J-2 triple 2V carburetion; no 2V came til ’58 when they capped fore & aft carbs. The J-2 had 3 Rochesters; 1 linked & 2 vacuum-dumped, non-progressive linkage (front & rear gummed up from non-use). They also had a J-2R & J-2-W1 “export engines” with whatever Olds’ Bill Holt & Pete Estes could get away with as a factory engine part for Lee Petty (Olds gave all their parts a number so Bill France wouldn’t call them cheaters). You may have a thin, high 10-1 compression head gasket which some say were part of the package. Dimpled valve covers mean you have rare, semi-legitimate Isky or Crane solid-lifter cam & adjustable rockers for clearance.
Most multi-carb J-2’s came on the luxurious 98’s or the small, light, & sporty Golden 88 3-speed column shift 2-door sedan (an early Olds Road Runner-type). Then France saw they went too fast & pulled the plug on them anyhow.
*Found on web: Cosmetically, the 88s had no front fender namplates. Super 88s had Super 88 nameplates on the front fenders. At the back, 88s have plain tail light lenses, plain panels below the tail lights, and plain bumper ends (unless it has optional dual exhaust). Super 88S have tri-bar ornaments on the tail light lenses, stainless panels below the tail lights, stainless wiper cowl, and bumper ends with faux exhaust ports in them.

0:40..."Yes, it is ladies and gentlemen, it's the 1957 Oldsmobile SUPER 88!"...Just now we first see that tri-split rear window, to which I might add "Suddenly, it's 1949". It's interesting to note that only the '57 Oldsmobubbles have that "1949 Effect", and none of the other GM stablemates that came out that same year.
3:55...Now Jay Leno would say "Now THAT'S a horn! None of this 'beep beep' noise."
5:39...Wise decision to go with conventional tailpipes, rather than the original style bumper-rotter-outers that were channeled through those 4-slotted bumper exhaust portals at both ends of the rear bumper.

That gas station is awesome! It brings memories to me. Every guy in the family worked at uncle Mike’s Gulf station once you became of age. It had two bays with one hoist. We fixed flat tires to oil changes pretty much anything except transmissions. The tire machine was very different from today’s machines lol
This was in 75-77 so cars like the Olds here was little rare but several cars from the 60’s were still very much on the road. I remember this 64’ Buick Electra 225 silver with egg shell white maybe light dove interior. Gorgeous! And of course all the 70’s new(er) cars but one more thing about uncle Mike’s was we filled Semi’s. Had to get a ladder and clean the windshield check all fluids and mind the rest of the store. The gas island (only one) had regular, premium, unleaded and super unleaded. $2 they got the windshield cleaned $3 and over windshield and back window. You start the semi and you’d hear that bell, ding ding, and now your cleaning windows on the cars and noooooo not her she wants all fluid checked tires checked and this was for .50 cents of gas in a beat up 70’ Sedan Deville can see the car and her so plain in my head. Sometime 3 times a day she would come in uncle Mike didn’t want to lose her business lol not kidding her son bought gas there too. All that for $44.07 a week every Friday I’d fill up my 66’ Plymouth Belvedere for $7 never forget the amount. 4hours after school and Saturday. Love the video’s sorry for the long text I can go on and on and on. Great memories

So do I! It may be a 4 door, yes, but it's NO 4-door "sedan" with ugly fat door pillars. The car manufacturers then worked really hard to make the 4-doors on the upper models as sporty as the coupes, and leave the ugly pillars for the low/lower-end models. All of today's cars would have been considered low-end back then, right down to their ugly blackwall-only tires. But, they go with the ugly day and age we've been in now for so long in every way. It's safe to say it's permanent.

What I loved about this era Olds was that the sedans looked like coupes thanks to the styling cues. The belt line chrome disguised that rear door. On earlier years, the rear door handle was less pronounced, so it was even harder to detect the rear door on those.

In the mid-sixties, I carpooled to grade school with some kids whose family had one of these. Our dad drove us to school, and we drove back in the ‘57 Olds. Sadly, I’ll have to admit that we did not appreciate it at the time. It would have been eight years old, and I remember thinking it was a beaten up antique. We were happy when their family replaced it with a quite dull ‘66 Plymouth (a base model). Seemed a LOT more modern at the time. Cars were really changing rapidly from one model year to the next back then. Nowadays, an eight year old car doesn’t seem hopelessly old.

This is my favorite Oldsmobile followed by the 56 and 62. The 57 just had such a beautiful dash with all the chrome, made you think of jewelry. And the seat upholstery was great. The dipping body feature with all the chrome on it, really the only year the did that much. And what a stunning roof line with the 3 windows and the feature line pressed into the roof and trunk lid. So beautiful. Love the perfect portioned rear and the front is fantastic and Charles mentioned the turn signal/park lights, really pretty. I like the shorter wheelbase of the 88 over the 98.

Late 50's mom and dad owned the ROSE colored (not officially?) Olds. Loved it and dad then said it was more power than he needed. Is that possible, he never lied?

Pretty sure the Super 88 was faster than the Corvette and Thunderbird that year. Those cars were running upper 120's back then. Pretty sure the Super 88 broke 150.

I appreciate the enthusiasm for design and style but I wish you'd give the engine a chance to speak. While you are admiring the rear-end why don't you get up into the business of that tailpipe? I KNOW!
