This achievement is so incredible it's hard to process it. 92,000 people for a volleyball game. Can you imagine how crazy this idea must of sounded the first time it came out of someone's mouth? And they actually did it. Nebraska!
To be fair, sustained excellence will bring people to matches, and this is a culmination of over 40 years of people all over the state putting in the work. Nebraska is a bit unique. You have a couple of generations of parents placing a volleyball in cribs for daughters, much like footballs are in the cribs for boys. This wasn't about one match between Nebraska and an in state division 1 opponent. It was a celebration of what the Huskers inspired across the state for their daughters. This was actually a double header. The match in the stadium earlier was between in state division 2 vb powers Wayne State and UNKearney. Also, Husker fans love their attendance records, and when Wisconsin took when from them in 2022, they pretty much demanded an opportunity to obliterate that record once and for all.
@@timmeyer9191 I really appreciate your post. I had no idea Nebraskans had such a cultural connection to volleyball. Seeing 92,000 people fill a football stadium to watch these volleyball games, purely out of local pride and a love for the sport, kinda felt like a proud American moment.
We already knew we were gonna break the record. We love our football and volleyball

To compete in women sport. People cane out to support this
@@qaxcgyujm It was political. I dont even know anything about volleyball. The only reason i saw was because of the amount of people saying they went to celebrate that moment. Celebrate REAL women sports. More and more states are following wich is good. And its not a ncaa issue only. If ncaa accepts a man to compete with women but not the state. The player wont be able to compete in that said state. Wich is good for women and women sports
I'm a student at NU, and I was could hear the noise from over a mile from the stadium on campus.
This wasn't just about one game. This was a celebration of over 40 years of work and Nebraska pride. People didn't show up to this out of boredom. This was about creating relationships with high school and club players across the state. This is creating in state Division 2 volleyball powers like Wayne State and UNKearney (who played a match before Nebraska vs omaha). This is parents placing a volleyball in the crib with their daughters like footballs with sons. That's 2 generations of investment that created a passionate fan base.
And like with football, Nebraska fans are passionate, and the thing they love most besides a good product are their attendance records. When Wisconsin took one away from Nebraska in 2022, the fans demanded to be given the opportunity to obliterate that record once and for all.

As a former avid volleyball player this is awesome. Volleyball is getting more and more popular in the states hopefully we get pro level leagues like other countries.
There's a pro level league coming next year (the PVF)
@@kiroolioneaver8532 sweet. I went to the women’s final four and that was awesome hopefully the league is like that
There is one current pro league with a unique format (Athletes Unlimited) and two additional leagues with funding to begin soon (LOVB/League One and Pro Volleyball Federation). Would definitely encourage any volleyball fans to follow and support these leagues however they can: watching through streaming, attending matches, and following their social media presence! The sport is growing and investors and advertisers are taking notice!
@@dotg123 heck yes
@@qaxcgyujm "usually doesn't happen for new sports leagues. They usually will start off in bigger markets"
Yes, and I think this is changing (PVF being an obvious example lol). The MLS has really been the lead on this in recent years putting teams in places like Austin and emphasizing more medium sized markets as opposed to say the WNBA which went to big markets and saw a lot of their franchises fold and fail. You go to where the fans are and/or where you can better market the game.
From a Buckeye, great job Nebraska! America really needs good stuff like this! Just awesome!
If your volleyball team ever reaches the level of National prominence (I know, an INCREDIBLY difficult task considering how elite the Big 10 is in the sport), your football stadium is large enough that you could break this record. Penn State Volleyball already has that tradition of excellence, but they don't have the fan support (rarely selling out their home court). Fortunately for us, Wisconsin’s football stadium is too small for them to try this!
i was there, it was amazing. I know this sounds elderly of me but i really just had to look around and appreciate how everyone came to this.
Imagine the roars during the game... the girls probably felt chills down their spines
Awesome!! The attendance at the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final between USA and China at the Rose Bowl was 90,185. That record was broken too last night!! ❤❤
At an Omaha University Volleyball Game? It'd be a lot more impressive if powerhouse NEBRASKA at least put another elite program out there to compete against. These were lambs being led off to a slaughter. It just seems like any world record breaking should involve 2 top-tier organizations.
@@beebers99read the reply to the top comment. They said it perfectly.
@beebers99 I think people make the mistake of believing this record was broken because of the match itself. This wasn't about just one match between instate D1 teams. This is the culmination of 40+ years of hard work across the state building Nebraska volleyball into what it is from the grassroots up and Nebraska pride. It was about sustained excellence, building relationships with coaches and players from high school and club teams. It inspire D2 teams in the state like Wayne State and UN-Kearney to become vb powers in their own right (they played a match against each other before Nebraska's vs Omaha). It is 2 generations of parents placing a volleyball in the crib with their daughters like footballs are with their sons. That created a passionate fan base, and when a rival took their regular season attendance record from Nebraska last year, the Husker fans demanded an opportunity to try and obliterate that record once and for all. And the possibility of breaking a US or world record was just the icing on the cake for those fans.
Nebraska volleyball is one of only a handful of collegiate women sports programs that are actually profitable, but that success didn't come overnight. This was a celebration of the work needed and accomplished to achieve this success in women's athletics.
This program just continues to put out amazing young people, I've got to think this has so much to do with the legendary coaches of Nebraska- Cook, Osborne...
The message this sends to all the young female athletes out there that women's sports DOES matter no matter what the trolls and the misogynists say is invaluable. Lots of future college volleyball players in those stands. So much for "nobody cares"...
To be fair, the issue for women's sports has always been how do you maintain attention outside these one-off events (whether it's games like this or events like the World Cup). Yes the Huskers do draw well and some other college programs but professional women's sports leagues still struggle to get that maintained interest week in, week out that men's sports do and so a lot more work needs to be done on that level.
@@kiroolioneaver8532 Ratings for womens sports have been rising across the board. Its not just Nebraska volleyball and the World Cup. Soccer leagues in Europe are pulling in incredible numbers (this record broke a previous record by Barcelona's womens team just last year). Every major womens professional sports league has seen ratings increase in the past few years and new teams are being added to many of those leagues which is a sign of financial health and growth. The womens NCAA basketball tournament blew off the roof last year as far as ratings. and most importantly advertisers and sponsors have been pouring in which tells you investors see womens sports as an opportunity to make money. and thats the most telling fact of all. just because womens sports are not at the level of the most popular mens sports doesnt mean these kinds of events are a rare exception. the trends are clear.
Im from kc but grew up big red fan. My mom would flip out if she saw this if she was here. Good to see this
My daughter played volleyball in high school. She quit after high school. We both still watch it and support it! She said moments like this make her proud 👏
1:35 Smashing the records. Congratulations for both teams for making history
Started watching womens volleyball 3 years ago Nebraska as a very good volleyball team. Great day for women sports gaining well deserved recognition.
It would be great to see the NCAA Women's Finals in this venue.
Those finals are in the middle of December, so not likely unless it's a dome somewhere--not an outdoor stadium like Memorial.
@timmeyer9191 they could still do like what they do for the Men's Final Four. Play in Lucas Oil Stadium or Mercedes-Benz Stadium, or Cowboys Stadium, etc.
Wish Nebraska had a stadium like the Cowboys to host the elite 8 thru to the finals - they deserve it. Volleyball fans will watch matches no matter who is playing, we just love the sport! love, from a Buckeye

Speaking as a Gophers Women's Volleyball fan, I am blown away! Congrats to Nebraska and what a great win for them and women's sports, in general!
Congratulations Nebraska Lady Cornhuskers!
I think this speaks to the Nebraska fanbase more than anything else. Their optimism (to the point where you could say delusional) and support week in and week out for their floundering football program the past five years already had 'em among the best. This pretty much puts 'em at the top of the list, imo.
This was perfect timing because the Nebraska fans are excited about their football season starting tonight.
I think there should be a professional volleyball league. It would do way better than the WNBA
There is a new pro league. Practicing now- first games are in February. Jason Derulo is a co-owner for the Omaha team.
They have professional vb starting next year! Omaha has a team!
There is one. The Professional Volleyball Federation. Known teams so far are Grand Rapids Rise, Columbus Fury, Omaha Supernovas, Atlanta Vibe, and Orlando Valkyries. San Diego still has to announce their name. But first game is in February 2024.
I think they may beat the WNBA in terms of actually getting people out to the games and ticket revenue. Unfortunately, I don't think volleyball is a sport that translates well as a TV sport.
Professional VB in Europe is huge.
Good for them. What channel was this on?

Good job huskers for making volleyball more known now. Hopefully other universities will follow.
I ❤️ this for women’s sports and volleyball 🏐 I’ve talked to male coworkers that didn’t believe this story-don’t believe women’s sports could achieve something like this. 🤨 I keep hearing “Not much else to do in Nebraska, so they must have paid them, gave them free stuff”. 😏 I’m glad so many could be there for such a historic event. What a positive experience as well for young girls who might aspire to be athletes one day. These young women athletes should be so grateful for Title 9 and the late Pat Summit. She was such an inspiration for girls athletics and one of the big motivators of this law. I don’t think many of them realize how monumental this was. Congrats to the

tickets were not free and sold out in a few days and Omaha has way more to do then most cities from boating on the river to the best zoo on Earth with a myriad of sports that are heavily supported as the huskers - Omaha is a town of wealth, integrity, hard work and intelligence....most cities do not have the success, intelligence or integrity at a level near what the state of Nebraska does.

One thing about Nebraska, they sure do support their sports teams.
Crazy to think that in the US some colleges and universities have larger stadiums than professional teams. They must think it crazy in Europe and South America that this many people would go to a university level game.
That is awesome

Lets stop the nonsense with women's sports. If people are interested they will watch. This is a great example. I love mens and women's volleyball because it not boring like alot of women's sports. College sports have been a big business since the 1950's. Successful coaches and sports directors often pull obscene salaries compared to the top faculty. Everywhere else in the world, top-notch athletic programs are part of the professional leagues, not the academia. The players are paid for their efforts instead of getting a few perks and a fleeting "celebrity" status while the schools rake in tens of millions every year. This kind of setup at American universities runs contrary to the purported value system of higher education, which was designed to EDUCATE and instill the values of free inquiry and freedom of speech. A young, intelligent student with an independent mind can't help but be confused by the cognitive dissonance involved in the inordinate attention to sports entertainment by their schools' management apparatus. Of course, money trumps everything in America, and lame excuses by the show runners are offered to justify their naked greed, but the unthinking, cult-like crowd couldn't care less.
American universities are the best in the world. If they can be good academically then why not also have sports? You just sound jealous.
College athletes get paid now. Do you live under a rock?
