She wrote it in 1941 but I was on deck when it debuted on the charts in 1958, immediately and since a standard, with Harry Simeone's orchestra. Especially with something like this with repetitive verses, I like to see how the writer does the contrasting material or how they do the variations. A little Latin flair doesn't hurt and then a key change for variety. The Simeone one has the constant snare drum playing to the walking/forward marching. This one is nice, a little different. As usual, you made if live as your heart is in it, as well as yourng fingers. It's a wonderful lyric.

Thanks for calling my fingers "young". lol. They are more than half a century "young". I try to do the same in my arrangements -- I like to vary repetitions and make them more interesting. I do really like the lyrics for this carol--very inventive!

@@elenafortinmusic Mine passed that mark 28 years ago, but they still function pretty darned good. That's the wonderful thing about music and piano just so; one can play well into seniority if the marbles up there stay in the right places. I have been very fortunate with health; for my years, I would be considered strong and in remarkable health. I maintain that "I'm not winding down, I'm revving up." Put another way, "I may be old but, I assure you, I'm still very immature." I'm a juvenile delinquent. Piano has been another of several life giving passions. I have quite a few. Many passions, keen interests, love of people and humor are my itinerary; I always find serendipities as I expect them. I can actually sing better than at any time in my life. In our small town, those opportunities are virtually non-existent. Still want to get to the point of accompanying myself; not far off.

I don't know if the orchestra was Simeone's but the chorale bears his name.

@@DavidMiller-bp7et Love it! On a side note, we had a jazz professor who sadly suffered from dementia, but if led to the piano, could sit down and play things he had learned in younger years. The music brain is an amazing thing.
