hearing Na-kel Smith say that u can contribute to the “skate scene” in different ways whether it be art, movies, the fashion, etc. is so refreshing. a lot of the time there’s so many toxic skaters who gatekeep skating and call ppl “posers” for liking the “aesthetic” of skating. so hearing Na-kel basically say if u like it u like it and just be yourself it’s not a competition, that’s honestly so dope.
it's more a case of people like Kanye and Rhianna, wearing skate brands on the red carpet, and then people who have nothing to do with skating, start wearing the gear. Certain brands will sell out, you have bots entering the chat, resellers etc. Soon a Skater can't get access to a thing, because reseller bots bought it all. Supreme is a prime example of this. It was once a cool skater brand, that had quality garments made in Canada. We all know what happened to that. It blew up, and the garments are now made much cheaper, yet the prices have went up. It became a corpo brand. Hardcore, underground culture needs to be gatekept, because if it's not, it will be pillaged for profit, by cooperation's. There is certainly a difference though, between someone who appreciates skateboarding, and wears skating brands, to someone who is just wearing it because they seen a popstar wearing it. The latter can be directly linked to corpo side of things, and the dilution of the culture. In the case of the former, this can actually help prop up local scenes, as they will buy from locals, and give them an alt stream of revenue, without taking the culture away from the scene, if that makes sense? So in short, skating fans are good, filmstars etc bringing notice to brands however, can be bad. If too much attention is brought to a thing, the corpo-sharks will start to circle.
