Even I struggled with James Ingram and Kim Carnes and I was at least alive at the time, though a child. I figured James Ingram out just by his voice, because I definitely had heard him before, but never seen him, but I had to look it up with Kim Carnes. I had heard at least one of her songs, but she didn't sound the same here and I had never seen her before either. So for any person younger than me, Lex did great. She definitely should listen to some Dionne, though. Dionne has a beautiful voice and deserves to be recognized.

I typically wouldn't watch a 're-reaction' to a song - but made an exception for this one because I understood your intent and thought it was a cool idea. So glad I watched it - Lex's enthusiasm and child-like joy at watching and pointing the artists out is so infectious. I've got a grand canyon smile on my face right now - the song alone can do that, but seeing her smile and light up like that really warmed my heart. I remember when this was filmed and released and the "Hands Across America" movement. I was 12.
We were camping in NorCal, and at the declared time/date of the "hands" movement, we all came out of our campers and tents and held hands across the camp ground and played this song on a boom-box. I thought it was a cool thing then - but never really grasped just how hugely impactful that historic moment was and the true impact this whole thing had on the world as a whole. I lived and experienced that history. My father was active duty military back then. That was the kind of world and freedoms our military supported. Many of the aid sent to these other countries were shipped out of Travis AFB, where my father served and was proud to be a part of.
After the video was over just now, I started to feel sad though - as I reflect on how divided we all are today, and how divisive movements are - driving wedges between countries and between countrymen. My father is no longer with us, and our world is not close to what he served to defend and protect. And saddens me greatly. I only hope we will all find our way - and soon - and movements like this become a thing again that bring hope and unity - not division and hate.

Until you mentioned it, I forgot about Hands Across America, even though I participated in it. So long ago now, and I agree, it is sad to compare the unity we had as a nation then, in support of people we would never meet halfway around the globe, to the division we have now.

    • @dggydddy59
      @dggydddy59 ปีที่แล้ว

A country is bound to be divided though, when maybe 1/3 of the people are supporting a cult leader who is actively trying to tear it down so he can take it over, and the entire time they're either denying it or don't realize it. I hope we can overcome this threat and recover so that things like Hands Across America and the like are possible once again.

The tall, incredibly handsome fella in the back row of the chorus... is the LEGENDARY Harry Belafonte... singer, actor, intellect, civil and human rights activist and humanitarian. He was instrumental in getting the USA for Africa project started after seeing scenes on the news of people who were starving to death because of the terrible famine parts of Africa was experiencing during the mid-eighties. You definitely need to check out his musical catalog and his amazing life. FYI: Despite the entirely fictitious celebrity death rumors about him that started on Facebook... Harry is very much alive and well... at 95!).
The guy next to Harry, the one in the glasses who is looking like a bookkeeper, is none other than Dan Akroyd (known more as a comedian from Saturday Night Live, and as an actor in movies like Ghostbusters and The Blues Brothers, but who is a longtime blues and jazz musician who had his own band). Though not as renowned for his music career as the other singers and musicians among this gathered group, Quincy Jones invited him to have a part in the chorus. I figure Quincy knew what he was doing.

But the "Live aid" documentary shows a different side. Because Lionel Ritchie wanted to legitimize the whole thing by having Bob Geldof, who started the "Band aid" charity of which "We are the world" was a part of.
Geldof agreed to be there. You can see him in the making-of documentary, and his name is on the record sleeve, but no matter how hard you look, he's not in the music video for "We are the world." So, what happened?
Well, call it a culture clash: When Geldof did the "Do they know it's Christmas?" single with the number one A-Listers of the UK, everybody was on the same page. The thing was recorded on a shoe string budget and the sessions themselves became a cosy get-together for the musicians who can be seen laughing, joking around and giving their all.
So when Geldof arrived in Los Angeles for "We are the world" he was appalled by the attitude of the musicians. "What do I care about what happens in Africa?" and "I shouldn't be doing this, this is bad publicity!"
But what broke the camel's back was when a lavish banquet was brought in, so everybody could eat.
Lionel Ritchie, seeing Geldof getting angry, told him "You don't understand, this is how it's done in America!"
      - To give you an idea of the contrast: In London, during that session, when the stars were getting hungry, they send out a crew member to a local snack bar to get some fish and chips for everybody, there were NO complaints.
Come the festival and Geldof found himself opposed by concert promotors and artist's managements, who were telling their artists "Don't do this, this will be bad for your career." Which is also why Michael Jackson didn't play Live Aid.

Ray Charles was something special. So miss him. He will forever have a special place in my heart. I'm a huge NFL Rams fan since the late 1970s. In 99-2000 season, they were in St. Louis and took part in Super Bowl 34, which was the first time they were in a SB since I was 7 years old! Rams went on to win that one, their first ever and was one of the greatest feelings and days of my life.
Prior to the game, Ray sang "America the Beautiful" in the pre-game show warm-ups, right before the National Anthem. And I have never heard it done better. His rendition - that performance listening to that patriotic song played so beautifully and heavenly from Ray was so emotional, and left a lasting memory in my heart as I waited as a nervous fan for my beloved team to take the field. I was a ball of nerves that day, and Ray really set the tone for being an emotional day. That was a great day, and Ray will always be a part of that memory.

You definitely must check out Dylan. The "who is this guy" guy: Just a beautiful, humble, legend by the name of Harry Belafonte, a.k.a. the man whose idea it was to create U.S.A. for Africa. He's a legend in so many ways - movies, music, social consciousness, good looks - - Here's the opening paragraph to his Wikipedia bio: Harry Belafonte is an American singer, songwriter, activist, and actor. As arguably the most successful Jamaican-American pop star, he popularized the Trinbagonian Caribbean musical style with an international audience in the 1950s. His breakthrough album Calypso was the first million-selling LP by a single artist.
With all that, my all-time favorite, favorite Harry Belafonte performance took place on The Muppet Show. The song: Day-O (a.k.a. The Banana Boat Song). Please react to this: th-cam.com/video/P-4xyg4PU-U/w-d-xo.html

It can't be stated enough that people either forget or don't realize Harry Belafonte's role in this recording coming about. I remember reading that one of the early ideas was to have a concert featuring all black artists. Also in the behind the scenes documentary one of the best parts of the night when We Are the World was recorded, they broke out singing an impromptu version of The Banana Boat song, making up the verses along the way. The chorus at the end of each verse was, 'daylight come and we wanna go home'. 😁
