  • President John F. Kennedy delivers a radio and television address to the nation regarding the Soviet Union’s military presence in Cuba. Oval Office, White House, Washington, D.C.
In his speech the President reports the establishment of missile sites presumably intended to launch a nuclear offensive against Western nations. He characterizes the transformation of Cuba into an important strategic base as an explicit threat to American security, and explains seven components to his proposed course of action: quarantine all offensive military equipment under shipment to Cuba, increase degree of surveillance, regard possible attack launched from Cuba as Soviet attack, reinforce Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, call for a meeting of the Organ of Consultation, call for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, and demand that Premier Nikita Khrushchev cease his current course of action. In his speech the President famously states, "Our goal is not the victory of might, but the vindication of right- not peace at the expense of freedom, but both peace and freedom, here in this Hemisphere, and, we hope, around the world."

Didn't even blink when he said -"“regard any nuclear missile launched from Cuba against any nation in the Western Hemisphere as an attack by the Soviet Union on the United States, requiring a full retaliatory response against the Soviet Union.”

I literally remember watching this speech on television with my mom. I was 9 years old. I think it made an impact on me at that young age because of how concerned my mother was as she was listening to this message.

We were very aware of the danger, even his children. We had drills in school, similar to a fire drill except that instead of leaving the building, we needed to hide under our desks, or go out into the hallways, and face the walls.

@Norberto Fontanez I appreciate your service to the American people. I remember the 93 attack, but can’t recall any details. I will definitely be looking for more information about it. I was a 23yr old union carpenter installing cabinets on the 65th floor of the U.S. Bank building in downtown L.A…when a radio bulletin came through explaining what was happening on September 11th. I immediately vomited and all workers were evacuated because there was talk about an unaccounted for jet that should’ve already landed at L.A.X. I was sad and angry for a long time. I don’t understand how people have forgotten that we’re all human and desire common interests

We the people in the United States need another President like JFK but, unfortunately it doesn’t look like we will ever have another great President like that anytime soon.

JFK went back on his promise. Given by his father.. For the mob to be able to balance things. And expanding to Cuba with gambling and narcotics. And organised crime. Which would have eased the pressure off the USA. Which is why it irritated the mob i would think. To get into softer drugs. And less deadly forms of organised crime. And pleasure. To balance the situation. And to educate people as well on the other side of the law. A balanced progressive economy. And we need to see all of the Kennedy clan. In the White House. In the next decade. Visiting. Working and legislating.

President Kennedy is loved by others as well. I live in the UK and probably would never have been born, but for the cool heads of JFK and his administration, especially his brother Robert, who was key in talks with the Soviets. Bless you President Kennedy.. A man of peace!! 🙏🏼❤️

I thought same thing and I don't know who or what Kennedy was maybe a part of or not but he looks like he was maybe the only and the first and probably the only president who actually cared about war today we have so many advanced missiles and bombs that you just kill the whole world with one bomb that's it they're nobody worry about anything we're just going to go extinct now 😂🔚🤯 🤔

This move by USSR to place missiles in Cuba forced the US to withdraw nuclear missiles recently located in Germany, only minutes of flight time to major USSR cities. We were not told that side of the story back then. It was a mutual stand down.

The missiles you write of were installed in Turkey, not Germany. It is said Kennedy was unaware of those missiles in Turkey believing they had been dismantled prior to this event. There is more to the story of those missiles, their purpose and capabilities if you're interested enough to seek it out.

For all of his faults, perhaps he truly wanted to prevent other dangerous little lands from obtaining the diabolical capability that he had at his hand. Perhaps that's why he was replaced so spitefully.
As things shift about, many of those who blindly would have waved a flag in adoration of him would come to wave the flag of a Cuba far away from their shores. The new Cuba is a different square on the same chessboard flipped upside down, in a game moved half a world away from that Cold crisis, where his recent replacement can secrete the stock of pelf, pay off puppets and partners, and parade the perfidy as Progress.

The most powerful speech ive ever heard in its entirety. If only our true President Donald Trump were to speak to us at this level. Though he is a magnificent true leader but he needs to speak to us with strategic solutions for todays conflicts and economic challenges that this country and the world is facing. I truly believe that Mr. Trump can do it.
