Thank you . I have an Arcteryx Theta AR ( old gore tex pro ) at 540g , I'm trying to equate the current RET with JIS L-1099 B-1 method . It looks like my current Theta has an RET of 6 ? Which equates to 25,000+ on the JIS scale ? So as I understand it the new most breathable one will have similar breathablity ( RET of 6 ) to my Theta but at a much lower weight? If this is so then that's for me. I have found the ultralightweight Zpacks Vertice and Montbell Versalite ( both sub 200 g ) to breath incredibly well , but do wet out . I still think water proofness is more important than breathablity in a waterproof jacket. Could you please correct me if I'm wrong in anything I've said here. Thank you
The membrane itself (Gore-Tex Pro Most Breathable) will have the same breathability rating as your Theta, but another aspect to consider is the outer and inner fabrics will also contribute heavily to how well a jacket can breathe, along with additional features such as pit zips, a two-way main zip, etc. I would agree with you that weather protection is highest priority with a hardshell, followed by breathability and fit. Can you stock Keela? Their system is supposed to be more waterproof than gore tex. All of these 3 layer membranes seem to wet out, even when washed and treated regularly.
Thanks guys! I won't be swapping my existing Gore-Pro jackets but good to know what's going on on the market :-) Question to Harry - is it possible to record in 60fps? Or at least 30fps, if 60 is not possible? 24fps is really jaggy, even with slightest motion (Paul's hand gestures for example).
It's not technically the framerate that makes it jaggy; it's the shutter speed. Although you're right, if the frame rate were higher then a higher shutter speed would give more natural motion than what we're seeing in this video. It would make more sense to stick with 24 or 25fps and use an ND filter to get correct exposure at a shutter speed of 1/50. Generally speaking, shutter speed should be 2 x framerate to give a natural look.
Could you help answer a product question: The Arc'teryx Alpha AR (women's) uses 40d Gore Tex Pro Most Rugged and 40d Gore Tex Pro Most Breathable. What would be the difference between these two fabrics? When they have the same denier Nylon, they should have the same strength and durability, no? Thanks in advance

The difference is the GTX Pro most rugged has PU coating, whereas the GTX Pro most breathable does not. With PU coating, the membrane has to get wet before it can start breathing, but the trade off is that the PU helps protect the membrane from clogging up with oils and such (PU is oleophobic). Since most breathable doesn't have PU coating, it both breathes right away and is air permeable. He briefly mentioned the PU coating on the most rugged, but did not explain the impact and lack of PU coating when talking about the most breathable.

I'm afraid we don't stock The North Face, so I wouldn't be able to comment based on first-hand experience. Having had a quick look on their website, it seems they don't use the same tests as Gore-Tex either, so it'd be quite hard to compare the two without physically using both back to back. I'll gove you my own experience so far: I have a TNF gore jacket, although very thin and not very strong, it's somewhat waterproof. By that I mean it can withstand a couple of hours of rain, and it gets sweaty. I then have a TNF Futurelight jacket as well, and it's very very breathable, but not windproof at all and pretty cold to wear and it's absolutely crap for shredding rain off. 10-15 minutes in rain and you're done. The zippers are actually better than the Futurelight material itself. That's it. I then have a Fjällräven Bergtagen Eco-shell, which is not so breathable, but better than my TNF gore jacket, and it's hard wearing and very well made, and it can stand a few hours of rain at the most. then it's done for. I am therefore finished with all these experimental alternative materials, and now just bought a Mountain Equipment Tupilak (not the Tupilak Atmo, but purely the newest 2022 Tupilak), and I'll test that out in real life. I need it to be waterproof and breathable and hard wearing, up an down mountains. There's a difference between warm rain during Summer in a valley, and cold rain for hours on the way up a mountain in the Winter, till' you reach above the clouds. I had enough of the sweet talking and the story-telling from all sorts of companies. We'll see. By the way, I had a Mountain Equipment Tupilak, a ME Changabang and a Arc'teryx Alpha SV in my hands at the same time, and the Alpha SV very clearly felt as the thinnest most fragile material, despite the say it's Most Rugged 100d, in comparison to ME's 80d Most Breathable. There you have it. Cheers.
@@monzarace Arcteryx is very smart with how they design their products. It may feel the thinnest and most delicate but that’s just to make it pack as light as possible. The alpha SV is borderline unbreakable
@@Seti12345 My Tupilak is just as good, in fact I chose that over the SV, that a friend have. Taping started to loosen after one year on his SV, so he will have to send it in. Apart from that and the noise it makes, just as my Tupilak, he is very satisfied about it, and he doesn't get wet. Kind regards.
As a follow up on the Mountain Equipment Tupilak hardshell, I've been on a mountain trip for 3 weeks, starting with forest, then rocks, then hard rain and sleet, then more rocks, also on a quick descent to avoid even worse weather that would keep up up there for longer time. I can just say, that it works very well, and is very good to wear, a bit noisy, but reasonably breathable, but could be much better, and the only real gault I can find, is a stupid, very stupid, positioning of the string pullers, that is almost unusable with gloves on in bad weather. And those little suckers also loosen and let go of the cord, so the adjustment you've made 5 minutes ago, is undone. That, my friends, is potentially dangerous, when climbing down rocks in bad weather. Mountain Equipment: you have to make that system better, and then you have a serious jacket! All in all, I am happy about it, and prefer it over other jackets and brands. ps: I will now contact ME and ask them what to do about the cord locks. I'll report back here eventually. Kind regards.

Excellent to see innovation, and clearly theres a requirement to communicate to consumers . Lets hope that the manufacturers can produce products that tick all the boxes of end users needs ... ie I and others need a rugged ( long lasting) yet lightweight and breathable jacket that packs small and doesn’t weight ton, for long distance hiking and multi-day hikes.. I now know about RET New Gore-Tex Pro 3 groups are; Breathability = 0 - 6 RET Active activity Durability = about 9 - Climbing mountains Stretch = about 13 - arms - Knees But I still require a jacket that is Durability and Breathability Nowadays, products whether clothing or electronics etcetera don't last long. In the past, things used to last for at least 10 years. The perfect jacket is one that has been maximized for all 3; and not just one. Edit: Forgot to say that I hope that the Mountain Equipment Lhotse jacket will be an excellent compromise.

The new Lhotse jacket may also be lighter than the original Lhotse jacket also. I got a refund for my previous Lhotse jacket years ago because I think of breathability problems. I don't think that it was necessary for me to wear the armpits' zips open, because the new breathability material appears to be excellent!
old goretex pro arcteryx jackets were between 40d and 100d beta LT used to be 40d beta ar had 40 and 80 denier face fabrics. their alpha sv had a 100d face fabric. so the old goretex pro used to be gore rugged ish
The old GoreTex Pro is exactly the same as the new GoreTex Pro most breathable (independent of the face fabric), it's essentially a rebranding. Most rugged and stretch are new and different. This has in itself nothing to do with the face fabric (you can get most breathable with a variety of fabrics, same as the old Pro), it's just that for most rugged Gore insist it being laminated only to a 70d or higher fabric. Hope this helps!
The latter is an acronym used by Arc'teryx to describe the outer and membrane of that specific jacket, whereas the former is just the membrane itself. The 3L Gore-Tex part of the acronym means it uses standard Gore-Tex which is the less-advanced version of Gore-Tex Pro.

@@thegolflife7565 Pro is more breathable and durable, so therefore tends to be used on mountaineering/climbing hardshells, whereas standard Gore-Tex is typically used on jackets which won't face such severe conditions. @The Golf Life. N40p has a 40 denier, plain weave nylon face fabric and the N70p 3L has a 70 denier plain weave nylon face fabric. The higher the number the stronger the fabric.
Hi Paul what jacket would you recommend for hiking , dog walking with the best waterproofing , money no object just want a complete waterproof jacket , I have the rab kinetic plus at mo but I think it HH is 10,000 and it does wet out after an hour or so of steady drizzle 🌧 Many thanks

I own a gore tex jacket and boots for mountaineering and they are not waterproof as they say they are when rain/snow is coming at you around around 120 kilometres an hour winds water finds a way to break through snow not so much as it’s bigger than rain and lighter than it but it isn’t 100% waterproof for hiking It’s a good idea but imma stick with pretex shield as it’s actually waterproof and very breathable still gonna use my gtx boots but one thing that is 100% waterproof is leather not Bad for mountaineering but great for walking around town just when it gets wet it gets heavy and it’s also heavy but it’s self so yeah a bit of advice
There is no jacket on earth that will keep you dry in those conditions! The fabric may well be waterproof but the jacket is full of holes, one where your head pops out, two where your hands pop out and one where your bum hangs out of! Wind driven rain/snow will inevitably find a way in. The trick is to remain comfortable, rather than dry. Good wicking and fast drying layers are essential and will remain comfortable even when wet. There are definitely jackets with a mixture of Most Breathable and Most Rugged, but we haven't seen any with all three just yet. Will wait and see! Kind regards, Harry.

It will be good if Goretex provide repair kit that contains membrane , glue and small patches for self repair (DIY) as Arc'teryx dont provide is disappointing
There's stuff out there that's only about a tenner if the worst should happen. Most won't rip their Gore-Tex jacket in its lifetime so it would be quite an expense for a marginal amount of gain for the manufacturer unfortunately. Gear Aid makes a Gore-Tex fabric patch kit, which contains gore-tex, but realistically, if it's a tear rather than a gaping hole, just use reglar tenacious tape as mentioned. The Gear Aid Gore-tex patch kit uses tenacious tape anyway.
All just gimmicks, maybe the stretch ones slightly better. Latest Outdry tech is just insane in terms of durability, breathability, simplicity and weightt. 👏🤘
How many people watched to the end for 'Most Breathable' and were disappointed to find out it's as breathable as existing Gore-Tex Pro? 🤪 Also, anyone have an RET - MVTR conversion table?
Hi Jason. Yes, it's true that the new Gore-Tex Pro "Most Breathable" is using the same membrane as the existing Gore-Tex Pro. However the use of lighter fabrics has the potential to produce some uber-light and high performance fabrics. Comparing MVTR to RET is very difficult as the two work very differently. That's pretty much why Gore use RET and everyone else uses MVTR, they love a bit of mystery! I've done some digging and think that it's safe to say that a RET of 6 is roughly equivalent to a MVTR of 25,000. I hope that helps. Paul.
@@trekitt Thanks, yes that helps a bit. There definitely needs to be some standardisation at some point, it definitely aids the consumer in comparison, and promotes transparency from manufacturers. The recent revision of R ratings for sleeping mats comes to mind.

I was elated inside the store when the Lhotse jacket's size XL fitted me perfectly because also I have long arms,
and I couldn't visualize how my waist and stomach could fit into a 36" waist's XL jacket!
The Large was too tight.
Compared to the original Lotse large size Lhotse jacket that I purchased years ago this version appears I think have better;
breathability (at least significantly), larger pockets, the new buttons' adjustable size technology appears to also be new.
The new Lhotse jacket may also be lighter than the original Lhotse jacket also.
I got a refund for my previous Lhotse jacket years ago because I think of breathability problems.
I don't think that it was necessary for me to wear the armpits' zips open, because the new breathability material appears to be excellent!

Would old goretex pro be the same as the most rugged or most breathable if the denier is high or low?
old goretex pro arcteryx jackets were between 40d and 100d beta LT used to be 40d beta ar had 40 and 80 denier face fabrics. their alpha sv had a 100d face fabric. so the old goretex pro used to be gore rugged ish
The old GoreTex Pro is exactly the same as the new GoreTex Pro most breathable (independent of the face fabric), it's essentially a rebranding. Most rugged and stretch are new and different. This has in itself nothing to do with the face fabric (you can get most breathable with a variety of fabrics, same as the old Pro), it's just that for most rugged Gore insist it being laminated only to a 70d or higher fabric. What is better Gore-Tex Pro or N40p-X 3L GORE-TE
The latter is an acronym used by Arc'teryx to describe the outer and membrane of that specific jacket, whereas the former is just the membrane itself. The 3L Gore-Tex part of the acronym means it uses standard Gore-Tex which is the less-advanced version of Gore-Tex Pro.
@@trekitt how is it less advanced? What would I be sacrificing if I went with the N40p-3l instead of the new gore Tex pro? Also what is the difference between the old gore Tex pro and the new gore Tex pro?
@@thegolflife7565 Pro is more breathable and durable, so therefore tends to be used on mountaineering/climbing hardshells, whereas standard Gore-Tex is typically used on jackets which won't face such severe conditions. @The Golf Life. N40p has a 40 denier, plain weave nylon face fabric and the N70p 3L has a 70 denier plain weave nylon face fabric. The higher the number the stronger the fabric.

Hi Paul what jacket would you recommend for hiking , dog walking with the best waterproofing , money no object just want a complete waterproof jacket , I have the rab kinetic plus at mo but I think it HH is 10,000 and it does wet out after an hour or so of steady drizzle 🌧

I own a gore tex jacket and boots for mountaineering and they are not waterproof as they say they are when rain/snow is coming at you around around 120 kilometres an hour winds water finds a way to break through snow not so much as it’s bigger than rain and lighter than it but it isn’t 100% waterproof for hiking It’s a good idea but imma stick with pretex shield as it’s actually waterproof and very breathable still gonna use my gtx boots but one thing that is 100% waterproof is leather not
Bad for mountaineering but great for walking around town just when it gets wet it gets heavy and it’s also heavy but it’s self so yeah a bit of advice
There is no jacket on earth that will keep you dry in those conditions! The fabric may well be waterproof but the jacket is full of holes, one where your head pops out, two where your hands pop out and one where your bum hangs out of! Wind driven rain/snow will inevitably find a way in. The trick is to remain comfortable, rather than dry. Good wicking and fast drying layers are essential and will remain comfortable even when wet. Hopefully there will be a jacket that have hybrid construction with all three new fabrics
There are definitely jackets with a mixture of Most Breathable and Most Rugged, but we haven't seen any with all three just yet. Will wait and see! Kind regards, Harry.

It will be good if Goretex provide repair kit that contains membrane , glue and small patches for self repair (DIY) as Arc'teryx dont provide is disappointing
There's stuff out there that's only about a tenner if the worst should happen. Most won't rip their Gore-Tex jacket in its lifetime so it would be quite an expense for a marginal amount of gain for the manufacturer unfortunately. Gear Aid makes a Gore-Tex fabric patch kit, which contains gore-tex, but realistically, if it's a tear rather than a gaping hole, just use reglar tenacious tape as mentioned. The Gear Aid Gore-tex patch kit uses tenacious tape anyway.

All just gimmicks, maybe the stretch ones slightly better. Latest Outdry tech is just insane in terms of durability, breathability, simplicity and weightt. 👏🤘
Admittedly there is a fair dose of marketing spin involved, but ultimately Gore-Tex is still an excellent product that performs superbly.

How many people watched to the end for 'Most Breathable' and were disappointed to find out it's as breathable as existing Gore-Tex Pro? 🤪 Also, anyone have an RET - MVTR conversion table?
Hi Jason. Yes, it's true that the new Gore-Tex Pro "Most Breathable" is using the same membrane as the existing Gore-Tex Pro. However the use of lighter fabrics has the potential to produce some uber-light and high performance fabrics. Comparing MVTR to RET is very difficult as the two work very differently. That's pretty much why Gore use RET and everyone else uses MVTR, they love a bit of mystery! I've done some digging and think that it's safe to say that a RET of 6 is roughly equivalent to a MVTR of 25,000. I hope that helps. Paul.
@@trekitt Thanks, yes that helps a bit. There definitely needs to be some standardisation at some point, it definitely aids the consumer in comparison, and promotes transparency from manufacturers. The recent revision of R ratings for sleeping mats comes to mind.
Stretch will be great on pants, but not jackets.
It'll be most applicable to those currently put off by the stiffness of most hardshell jackets, or who just want a little extra comfort. It won't be for everybody, but that's why there are three new versions! Kind regards, Harry.
