  • Northern Hawk Owls (Surnia ulula) are found mostly in northern Europe, Canada and the northern United States, although they occur in Asia as well. Unlike most owls they prefer to hunt during daytime, making them easier to see than most other owls. The name Hawk Owl comes from their hawk-like appearance and behavior. They like hunting from a higher vantage point such as the top of a tree and in flight they resemble a hawk, hence the name Hawk Owl. They are non-migratory and usually stay within their home range, but in some years they may turn up well outside of that range looking for food. Their main prey is voles and smaller rodents, but they will also eat birds up to the size of a partridge.
