I am thorn between: 14x8 Yamaha recording custom (Birch), Tama SLP (Steel), Pearl Utility (Maple).
Another option is gretsch bronze 14x6.5 5mm extra thiccccc

I fell in love with the 14x8 size of drums when I was in high school. This band came through town and the drummer was rocking this Ayotte kit (back when Ray was still making them) and he had with it a 14x8 snare in maple. It was the first time I'd ever seen/heard one, and it was the best sounding snare I'd ever heard in my life. I knew at that point, I needed one. Fast forward a bunch of years... Vinnie Paul releases a signature snare drum with Pearl, snakeskin wrap, spiked tube lugs, 14x8. It was the first one to hit shelves in Canada, I bought it that day. It's been one of my main drums ever since, even got it signed by Vinnie himself. Love it at all tunings... they are just amazing drums. Congrats on your 14x8! Just gorgeous drum sound and look.

Thanks so much for this Rob! I have a Gretsch Catalina Birch Special Edition and I've been battling with the snare (put new Remo heads on both top and bottom (Remo Powerstroke P3 batterhead) and Evans Puresound 20 wires). But just can't get the snare where I want it and I'm playing it with a shirt over it to deepen the sound. Wicked sound when you drop the tension on that snare toward the end of the clip! Awesome! Yeah I want to build your snare setup.

I built a 14 X 8 cherrywood stave snare a few years back....I found it to be a bit much in the low-end so I cut it back to a 7"...now, it's perfect...the badge on it says "Big Thump"!

I love my 8" deep Sonor Signature cast bronce snare. Fits also well with my Tama Club jam kit - allthough the snare weighs more than the other kit parts together, incl. cymbals 😁

Well didn’t have cookies but had jello and whipped cream. Damn that snare is HOT!!! It’s great to see a musician so into his equipment. Thank you for the video I’m sold.

As far as affordable drums the big black steel Tama 14x8 looks cool and Ludwig makes a supra light 14X8. I have the 14X6.5 Supra light and really like it so I would imagine the 14X8 would rock.

Man I love your PHX kit. Nice choice of color. I could probably splurge on one but I’m not where you are. I do play on a decent used Mapex Pro M kit at church. The heads were replaced with new Evans heads. That made me a fan of Evans. When I got into drums and an early age, my first set of drumsticks was Pro-Mark. The church kit besides, the shell pack, looks different than when I started out. I’ve added a lot to it. I have an older Mapex M series hit at home. The Apex pedal that was with it was decent, but I replaced it with a better pedal.
But I stumbled across this video. If I buy used gear, I’m gonna thoroughly look at it and not just give it a once over. I came across a used DW PDP 14x8 maple birch snare inspected it really good looking for cracks, etc. and saw it had potential. I was in great condition, the asking price was in point, and basically I just had to have the resonant head changed. I had them tune it also, and in a way, that showed me how to tune it when I watched them. I did also get a drum tuner. However, when I had the chance, I splurged and got a 14x6.5 Yamaha brass recording custom snare. Man I love that thing! I also have a Yamaha Stage Custom steel snare. And the Mapex snare for my home kit. Also have a Mapex Black Panther Razor snare.
I enjoy all of your videos and have learned a lot and used quite a bit of what I’ve learned. I’m using DW 5000 or Tama 900 but I’m definitely thinking of springing for that Yamaha FP-9C. They put a lot of thought into the designs every adjustment is writhing easy reach. I think they’ve raised the bar in that regard and it remains to be seen if brands like Pearl, DW & Tama incorporate that into updated pedal designs.
Keep it up with the content. I’m gonna look at getting some merch to wear closer to the fall.

Oh man! At the high tuning I was loving it, then at the low tuning I was floored. Gorgeous! I don't have an 8 by 14, YET! It's going on my gear list for sure. Have a question for you, Rob. Do you change the tunings significantly during a single show? Thank you for all of your awesome videos!
