Excellent video. One thing I'd like to acknowledge is that these Soft skills overlap. For instance, one could use communication skills to build good interpersonal relationships and vice versa. Points mentioned about flexibility is very true. Id say that To be successful, Soft skills is a vital for everyone regardless of one's occupation.
Thanks for these. (I teach them.) The great thing about soft skills is that you can take them with you; they are always in demand, especially by hiring managers and especially now. WSJ, Forbes, and others emphasize them above hard skills.
Great video! My main problem is working with others who have these underdeveloped soft skills. It can be a real pain to work with someone who isn't good at communicating or good at working in a team.
I also find that difficult. In that case it falls under skill number 9: Give good feedback. What I understand, is that good feedback typically contains: some motivation for the other to change, a clear formulation what needs to change and how to change, and the preservation/improvement of the relationship. I currently have 2 bosses, one older than the other. The older one is close to retiring and therefore slowly withdrawing from work. Unfortunately the other boss is not as good at communicating/cooperating as the older boss, which is also demotivating. This has become clearer to me over the past few weeks, but was already happening for several months. I now often return feedback to the younger boss, and it is clear that he is really desperate for it. (example: this week he interrupted my train of thought, and that caused the meeting to take much more time as I Iost what I was saying and found it difficult to recover from that, and everyone who I talked to who was at that meeting told me that this was not a good start to the meeting) When other people from the team talk in private with me about this. I tell them I agree that things are not going well. But I also try to create an understanding so that everyone is better equipped to solve the issue, rather than just saying that things are bad.
Thanks for your great video. Personally, I am very interested in learning how to work efficiently and keeping motivation when working conditions seem ambiguous.
Recently found your channel. My most recent supervisor had none of these skills and I always wonder how she was able to get her position. I ended up resigning due to the work environment being toxic. She created conflicts. But it is good to have these skills...it's a must
Sorry to hear this story. People get promoted for many reasons that do not necessarily indicate their leadership abilities like how many years they've been on the job, their technical competence, their history with influential people in the organization, their ability to "manage up" well but not people below them, etc. In my experience, supervisors like that often hang on and survive longer than they should but eventually get stalled out and lose influence and credibility. If you have a safe channel for sharing feedback about how poorly they do their jobs, then that might be a good idea to communicate that. I wouldn't "come after them" but if the organization asks for feedback, I'd certainly let them know. They may not get fired but somebody might talk to them and supervisors like that are frequently moved to lateral positions but do not directly supervise people anymore. For instance, I once worked under 2 to 3 very difficult supervisors. For a while, I thought I was the only person who had trouble working with these three. I soon heard that there were numerous complaints about them from all over the organization. Within the span of about 2 to 3 years, 2 of them had been completely removed from any leadership roles and the last person was moved into a job with a title of a leader but didn't have anybody reporting directly to them.
@@alexanderlyon It's ok and Thank you.. It was time for me to move to something else. I was able to be accepted into a tech bootcamp, and the time affords me to study for certification. And you brought up some interesting points. My former supervisor does have other employees that have complained about her, we also have an exit interview that we complete, when we leave the company in which I made sure I completed one. There are several other employees that a resigning as well and will be completing the exit interview.
Thanks Alex! I love all of your videos! It’s great you approach communication and leadership with a view to make people happier! We really need this! I was really lost before coming across your channel... it connected lots of dots to my professional and personal life - why certain things did not work they way I planned. You’re an inspiration for me!! Your work has an impact!!
I know these as ‘transferable’ skills, or skills you exercise that transfer to any position at any job anywhere. I have observed that these are largely tied to one’s personality (or gift mix). They can be recognized for discussion, even quantified (as here in this video; but for the most part they are cultivated (sometimes acquired) by experience. In other words, a company cannot necessarily train someone in these particular skills. That said, I see that it is important (1) to recognize these as skills, and (2) highlight them to potential or current employers.
I hear where you're coming from. The research on the trainability of these skills is actually really encouraging. Essentially, with instruction and effort, virtually anybody can improve these skills. We are not equally gifted as a starting place but anybody who puts in the time and effort and has a decent teacher gets better over time. In other words, these skills can be trained just like any other skill. I've worked with thousands of students and professional clients and I've watched them improve right before my eyes in just moments.
@@alexanderlyon Thank you. I look forward to being mentored by you in the area of leadership and communication. This will help me in my forth coming project.
