Ohhhhh baby Zaki, you’re growing so strong❣️The aerial raid on Merah made me laugh so much. Slightly worrying that they’re chewing paper, but they all look so healthy and energetic, I guess it’s more like a toy than a snack - maybe orangutan chewing gum. From what I’ve seen before, it’s part of their enrichment activities to find treats hidden in boxes. 😊 Your little interaction with Zaki at the end was just magic - thank you so much for sharing.
Correct! Since gorilla population is critically endangered zoos do split up some families for breeding purposes. In the wild males have 3 options once they mature…stay in group accepting not being the dominant male, venture out on their own & steal females to start their own group, or join a bachelor group of other males.
There is one large tree in the middle. Half way up they made it into a second level (flat). They , the orangs, can climb up several points at the outside (supports) of the dome. A new gorilla and orangutan area is being planned now.
Where is their real food and why the heck are they all eating paper and not real food? I watch the rescues I. The wild all the orangutans I. All the zoos and the gorillas also I have never seen anyone feed them paper never!
The Orangutans are not “fed” paper. They are given food and their eating habits/consumption is monitored closely. Some of the food they are given is hidden in boxes and wrapped in paper. The Orangutans do munch on the paper. It is likely due to boredom and just plain curiosity. They do not eat much paper.
Chewing on the paper is more of a self-soothing behavior. Similar to how human babies and toddlers will place objects in their mouths. As they grow older you see less and less of this.
Zaki was playing with you. Omg, how cute. Thanks for the great video.

Where are the Trees??

Why are they eating brown paper?
Chewing on the paper is more of a self-soothing behavior. Similar to how human babies and toddlers will place objects in their mouths. As they grow older you see less and less of this.
The orang utans so hungry, no foods, only paper😰
He is probably bored. Look at Zaki’s eyes when he is mouthing the paper. His interest is Not in the paper. We all get bored at times.
