I owe a lot to Chris and Soundgarden, for having made me "meet" Artis. If the tape didn't snap, back when the album came out and I bought the musicassette, by the continuous repeating the listening of the song rewinding the tape even just to enjoy the spoons solo and the spoon and drum duet, I believe i could have ended to leave everything and start living on the streets performing some sorta Art my own way. I didn't but I've never forgot Artis. His spoons' rhythm changed my perspective in seeing life if not my life itself. Thank you so very much, Spoonman!!!
He played at a school I went to as a kid. I can’t remember exactly when but I wanna say between ‘83-‘86 (I went to A LOT of schools in that time). I’d love to be able to sit and talk with him. I was excited when Soundgarden released Spoonman.
I’m SO glad I stumbled across this video. His musicianship touched me and his openness about being on SSI and struggling financially really resonated with me, I’ve been ashamed on the inside for so long and felt embarrassed because I’ve been on disability for mental health issues for about seven years now.
Playing the spoons is like playing guitar and drums with the entirety of your body- with an edge of dance and performance. I've always wanted to mic up Artis' instruments instead of just hearing external microphones capturing his work.
Wonderful to learn further on such an unique person. I was 15 in 91, so total grunge and only learned today soundgarden's spoonman (killer riff) is a real person. At a time now when music is just really a commodity and no trully unique sounds come out like during 20th century, its always great to see an original person.
im from Indonesia and was in Olympia WA for Study in 97. That time in Jakarta Soundgarden was the Underground sound for the band and when I saw spooman performance at my campus, i cant believe that this guy is real! very fortunate to see him live, specially me from the other part of the world to see the real spoonman
He should be receiving residuals for his performance on one of the biggest hits of the nineties, plus its video. Just based on standard performance rates coupled with Clearchannel's rotation data, he should be earning at minimum $200-300k a year just on radio play, not counting record sales and downloads, which could easily be a million dollars or more a year. Makes me wonder if he signed away his rights at some point or was the victim of a leech manager or lawyer. Or maybe he's just bad with money? Either way, there's no reason anyone playing on the second biggest hit off 'Superunknown' should be living in poverty.
The sad thing is that if he collected royalties, he'd be in danger of losing his housing, his medical coverage, and more. SSI doesn't let people get ahead or save money.

I was a hired hand for the song. $1K for the 2 hour, 4 take, recording session in Seattle and $7K for the Vid in Long Beach, Los Angeles area. About a 45 minute, two take shoot and a basic 8 hour day hang'n and shoot'n clips. I actually received some royalties about 2017 from ASCAP/SAG. First I saw in 25 years. I live on $1500 monthly. $1400 and change VA Disability from the 60s and $80 sosh from the one job of any substance between 1969 and '70 at the Post Office in Seattle. It's enough for me to live on but I have a couple more little offerings from the Spoonman of me.Too expensive to produce but . . . Really, Marvin, who gets to have this kind of life? I 'never worked a day in my life' and ... You know.

I'm probably sure that he had maybe 0 imput with the actual writing of the song, but since he inspired it, was a part of it in the recording process and became a 90s cultural icon because of it, a part of me wishes that he had gotten some kind of royalities for it. It is about HIM after all. I can't be wrong, can I?

I was sitting next to Artis at a UDistrict street fair in the very early 90s and he noticed a little girl who was very upset with a father who was not closing the deal; so he jumped up and started entertaining her with bubbles and shards of colorful cloth; she immediately started giggling.
He sould come to Philadelphia. I know two brothers who are street performers. One makes beautiful jewelry with utensils while the other plays music. I would love to see what would happen if the 3 of them worked together, just for one moment in time!
