- Track a developing La Niña: California's winter weather impacts
La Niña is favored to develop in the next couple of months, peaking during the wettest time of the year. Here's what it could mean for California's wet season.

Excellent presentation.
You’re a wonderful teacher. Thank you.
This is how the news should be.
Thank you
We never get the fog like the 50s, 60s, 70s or 80s
that fog was from farmland decomposition. we now have a fraction of farmland we had in those decades. climate change has nothing to do with this,
Very interesting, thanks! You've always rocked the weather
Our *last* La Niña gave us the CA atmospheric storms of early 2023!
Love these forecasts!!!!
This is incredible. So informative & presented well. Thank you ABC10
In particular, because of the fires in SoCal (esp the Bridge Fire in the San Gabriels) the weather picture for the Winter in Southern California is critical....,there are mud dams all along the base of those mountains which try to prevent catastrophic mudslides from pouring down into communities like Pasadena, Azusa, etc. Similarly, the fire north of Chico could bring mudslides down Bidwell drainage into the city of Chico, the same goes for communities north of Chico....,great report, Monica, you are a gem
I always enjoy your newscast
Very informative. Thank you!
Excellent breakdown! Thank you!
Thanks for the heads up gonna cancel my flood insurance
🤣🤣
Swap it for fire insurance…
Wow, so comprehensive. Thank you for teaching all of us
Super educational, thank you! If our media could do the same level of depth and nuance for politics as you just did for our weather,, I think our country would be way better off!
A GREAT explanation!
😸good info on La Niña. Thanks👏
So California is going to get less rain, but not necessarily so we’re not sure. It might get more rain, but it might get less. Depends on the year.
Weather feels more like a gamble than anything after all that rain the other year
That’s what CA has always been known for - “feast or famine”
When is anyone on mainstream news gonna start mentioning that El Niño an La Niña cycles have historically had more space between them? These cycles are supposed to take 18 months or more to shift between, not 6-9 months. We should not be experiencing both sides of the oscillation during a single year.
The state of California climatologist/ state weather forecaster- released his forecast on October 1 of last year. He forecasted a dryer than normal year.
🤣🤣🤣.
Within 2-3 weeks the Pineapple Express started and did not let up for months. Last year was record breaking rain and snow throughout ALL OF CALIFORNIA.
The state meteorologist got it 100% wrong.
But they know the weather 50 years from now !
Great and thorough information. I feel informed. Thank you for your service!
I appreciate the detailed information
Excellent, well explained.
Also could be the first time that a meteorologist on TV base on metric system (°C & meters) throughout the report.
Excellent in-depth presentation. Thank you!
This is the only job you can have and be wrong 90% of the time and not get fired.
This was an excellent presentation. Thank you!
For 30 years I've been hearing that CA will be hammered with catastrophic rain, and hurricanes in the east due to global warming. Yet we've been below normal on rain in CA, and the east coast is having yet another below normal hurricane season. The good news for you is that at some point we will have another "great flood of CA" and you can say "see I told you so".
Climate change !
They are always right .
Heads I win . Tails you lose !
I dont believe in science they claim while they happily think men can get pregnant …..
A lot of dust is coming off of Africa. Careful what you wish for!
Really good, thank you.
Everything really well explained! All the information is factual and all important topics are covered. Thank you so much to the ABC Team for providing this video and forecast.
Watch it STILL rain a lot and pour when it does. Thank goodness.
Welcome to the age of Aquarius. 🩵
Climate change is to blame for both draught and wetter years?
Now you're catching on. That's why they changed the narrative from "global warming" to "climate change" after they got caught cherrypicking the data in 2009. "Global warming" was too specific; but since most people don't understand the difference between climate and weather, "climate change" is tailor-made as a boogeyman that covers all bases. Hot, cold, wet, dry - it doesn't matter. They can blame everything on "climate change". It's nonsense, but it works.

Lady we were in an El nino. Last year That's why we got rain in Southern California.
What about central CA?!!
what about the 50th state, hawaii
I think 2024/25, will be very similar to 2007/08 I guess
Kinda feels like saying "we're not in a drought" gives people the wrong idea about our water situation. This term really needs to be updated, perhaps basing it on a 3-4+ year average.
Basically California is more often in a 'drought' state than an fully wer state. It's waves of seriously deep-snow are cyclical by a 11 year cycle. 🎉
We never get a strong La Niña since 2010 2011
Any predictions more than 7 days out is just guessing. Told to me by 2 senior meteorologists.
Expecting for my son to be due on October 7, but the rain You all know why
Appreciate your detailed discussion on La Niña. What I don’t understand is why the cooler water pushes the jet stream farther north. What’s the connection?
The polar jet stream (60 degrees) is controlled by polar cell in the north (60-90 degrees) and the ferrel cell (30-60 degrees) in the south. The jet stream’s stream strength is derived from the difference in temperature from these two cells.
It isn’t pushed northward as much as it is weakened when the temperature gradient is low allowing the north american low pressure system (what we perceive to be a california winter) to come in.
The colder water in the ferrel cell would lead to a weakening of that polar jet stream.
@@gammaraypotatoes3307 Now I want to know more about the polar and ferrel cells... I'm off to the Googlesphere...
Bottom line, you have no clue
Last few years it's been the opposite of the predictions, so it's a very complicated crapshoot.
You are correct. And, I've only seen one meteorologist admit they were wrong.
Why report on la nina el nino ... last few years it has done the complete opposite of what the news is selling us
So it will be hot and dry... Greeeaatttttt
Way too long winded get to the point
So in other words, we are in between these two models and you needed time fill because you don’t have anything to say. Waste of air time.
11:10 - Absolutely wrong. The data do NOT show that "the magnitude and intensity of individual storms...are increasing". Even if that were true, it would not necessarily have anything to do with climate (for example, interdecadal oscillations). But it's *_not_* true. This guy is just another one of the crowd of clowns who do not grasp the difference between climate and weather. It is an established fact that the frequency and severity of extreme weather events is not increasing. It's just false to say otherwise.
Weather forecasters, the only job where being wrong most of the time doesn’t result in being fired
Niño not Nino 🤦🏽
Show me last year forecasts to this year results to help me believe you have any idea of what you profess
👌👌👌👌👌👌🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Why do you show San Francisco rain yr. When youre actually showing results for San Francisco airport. Dont like it. At least be honest about it. I like you. Youre grt but plse show the right precp amount for San Francisco not San Franciso airport.
Notice a trend of news reporters that have lisps or like there wearing braces what's up no one can speak anymore.
Monica Woods is one of the best presenters I’ve ever heard speak on the weather. I have zero problems understanding her words.
