Hindus were not a majority in Kashmir region for well over 1000 years. This region was mostly Buddhist before Islam. In fact most of Indus River basin was Buddhist before some Hindu and Islam conquests. These Buddhists were often chased out of the Ganges region and settled in the Indus.
