    Dude snow Tires, big difference you are the Rural Leaf after all.

      Once in every 5 year occurrence doesn't make it worth it splashing the cash...especially seeing even then she didn't get stuck. I dont like buying screen wash as £2 for it would give me 100 miles driving, so splashing the cash on some once in a 5 year use snow tires is really unlikely ha ha :)

      Ian Sampson I don't blame you. I live in East Tennessee mountains in the USA and we get several snows per winter. I'm 52 years old and have never bought snow tires. I do keep a set of snow cables just in case I get caught out in a big snow storm. I have very seldom used them. Oh yeah, I've never had a wreck in the snow either. I probably have driven 50,000 miles on snow covered roads that were completely covered. You wouldn't own an EV if you didn't care to throw money around for the premium items.

      Bryan, you have just covered an interesting point. In the UK, from all the friends and family ranging from young drivers all the way up to 80+ year olds I know no one who owns a set of specialist snow tires. The ENV200 wasn't even in the snow (or ice) when the bump happened, that was caused by a lorry cutting across the road into a line of oncoming traffic - and a mini pile up (pile ups occur year round...although it was around 5c.
      I have never suffered an sort of accident in the snow (mainly because these events are every 5 years ish), more over never had an accident at all in 18 years of driving.
      Testing the new tires after driving a couple hundred miles a couple of weeks ago and they stopped just like they do in summer period (gripped the road, no slide or squirming)
      Now, colder climates and other situations - for sure suspect there is a reason there are laws in places - i.e. you don't have them fitted you WILL crash...thats different. To suggest no research has been done and we all just go blindly driving around in some sort of unsafe environment because we are to daft to look into it is a bit of a stretch at best. (If it was just me and everyone else had them, then that would be the case....but no one has them here in the UK.
      One interesting thing that was on BBC radio 4 yesterday - putting a cap on the length of time you can have tires, i.e. a lifespan. They want in law for it to be 10 years otherwise tires are potentially dangerous. That would certainly making having a spare set sat in the garage at great expensive interesting, especially if in the UK they were rarely used.

      RattyB75 No requirement in the UK through numerous bodies not deeming it needed / required. Personal experience across multiple generations cannot be dismissed, it’s real life data. But as it’s a hotly debated subject will just leave it at that.
      Have a good Christmas!

    • @IanSampsonRLO
      @IanSampsonRLO  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RattyB75 in the UK it’s called sarcasm, also joking. Hard to explain in text but ahem, basically she was making excuses. For example, when she said it was me who did it with the shovel...well...she didn’t actually really mean it was me...just a joke to try and pretend it wasn’t her fault. Of course she know it was a driving error. Anyhooo.... have a good Christmas!

      Yeah I noticed that too. Ian using the shovel to clear the snow off the the ENV200 (LOL) but leaving the wet gooey snow on the driveway. A little salt on the wheel paths would have helped also.

    Hey Ian, glad to see an update from you. One thing, I didn't realize you'd get snow that deep in England...very exciting! I get moisture from the weather in my 2012 in Spokane, Washington, USA. We also get the snow. My moisture problem is not anywhere close to your issue, but it could be because I constantly use my heater and defroster. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you mentioned sometime in a past video, that you rarely use the heater to preserve power. The Leaf's seem to be so tightly made and sealed up, that just breathing causes my windows to fog up. Your moisture brought back memories from years ago when I owned a '63 VW Beetle and a '65 Chevrolet Corvair. In the winter and rainy spring, I would have to use a towel to wipe down the interior windows to just see out. Talking about EV range, I couldn't help but wonder what your buddies thought of the constant charging to go somewhere. I can imagine they had nothing good to say about using EV's and the hassle it causes to having to stop and recharge every few miles. It's the around town benefits that pay off in big ways when you don't have to stop for gas. I'm looking forward to your next video. Thanks again for the update!

      The UK is much further north than even Canada, so we can actually get quite a fair amount of snow, but it rarely sticks around for so very long. The jet stream frequently blows relatively warm, wet Atlantic air across the UK, so it usually melts off quite soon.

    To combat Dampness building up inside cars, especially during certain weather conditions, most modern dinosaur fuelled vehicles have some setting available of the windscreen Demister/defroster, which can operate the air conditioner and the heater at the same time. So that dehumidifies and cools fresh outside air, then heats it and blows it across the windows. However the functioning of a Nissan EV HVAC system might be different. Usually leaving the air intake controls set to admit outside fresh air, reduces problems of humid air building up inside vehicles and fogging the windows. Use of the "recirculate" air position is best saved for use only when driving through outback Australian bushfires ! and possibly also, when driving in temperatures of above 40*C or below -10*C

      Yeah the cold really kills the battery, especially mine now being so old and having done so many miles. I think in that weather I was getting around 65 miles per charge as long as I didnt pre heat...then it was even less!

    Another great video. The 7k price on your 14 plate leaf is about what I'd expected. I paid 8k for my 14 plate leaf back in July. If you was to look for a 14 plate leaf on the market in the same condition, it would be 1k or so more than you was quoted. You did see a lot more snow than us. :)

    • @IanSampsonRLO
      @IanSampsonRLO  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At auction (trade) these are going for around £3k plus fees, as its going straight to auction was expecting a price not far off that to save them the hassle of getting it picked up and taken to an auction house. Thanks for watching! Yeah we got a lot this year, its not common though1 :)

    Yes always clear all the snow off your vehicle before you move it anywhere. I would use that spade to try clear your driveway in future before the snow turns to slush then compacted ice. Sorry to see your ENV has had a bump. Hope it’s not too costly to get repaired.
    Check all your door seals and boot seal to see if there is any damage. You have water getting in somewhere to create that much damp air in the Leaf.

    • @IanSampsonRLO
      @IanSampsonRLO  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Snow is very rare where I live (Christchurch, New Zealand), however I am constantly amazed how it's almost universal that folks pull in and park forward, and then need to reverse out. I recall donkey's years ago, a friend with a "home made" 1960's station waggon (estate car) that was a bastard to reverse, with it's tiny back window and no reversing lights at all, and we arrived during the daylight, at a friend's house for tea one late afternoon. So he drove forward up the long skinny driveway and parked , knowing full well it would be completely dark by the time we were going to be leaving. I even commented at the time "why didn't you back up the driveway while it it's light, so that when we go to leave, when it's dark, we can drive out easier as the car has headlights but no reversing lights". Especially when it's likely to be dark, or windows fogged up, or frosted , or snowed over, it just seems to me to be easier to set yourself up for driving out of parking spaces, whether at home, or out and about somewhere, in a forward direction. That said, as said by others here, perhaps special "snow" or "Winter" rated tyres might be worthwhile where you live. Leafs do have electronic traction control, and within limitations this acts somewhat like the old "limited slip diff", but if you often encounter ice or snow covered roads, then choose suitable boots for your steed dude !

    • @IanSampsonRLO
      @IanSampsonRLO  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To cut a long story short - had no idea it was going to snow. So parked up or normal the night before to wake to this one in every 5 year occurrence. Shame we don't have more of it to make it even worthwhile splashing the cash on all that winter equipment, but its the UK so pretty rare.
      Now - the more important part - footwear. If you take a really close look...would need hawk eyes though lol, I am wearing spiked shoes - they come out...about every 5 years...or unless its really muddy when I run the trails. No slippage, especially when running with a Husky.

      I have a cousin, London born and bred, and he reckons that even in his lifetime he's noticed the Winters are much milder than they used to be, global warming (plus I guess, the warming effect of ever larger "mega-cities") and the effects on climate thereof. I've been watching the TH-cam videos of a Kiwi guy, now living in "Slovakia" with his Slovak wife, and he drives a Peugeot badged Mitsubishi iMiev, which has a snow setting for traction control and he runs Winter tyres for several months of the year. With rear wheel drive in a tiny car smaller than a Leaf, he manages driving all throughout Slovakia including short visits to Austria and Ukraine. Cheers Ian :)

      Remember that the charge point is at the front of the vehicle, so if you need to charge overnight, or take advantage of the preheater/timer facility, you have to pull in forwards...

    • @KiwiCatherineJemma
      @KiwiCatherineJemma 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that's a good point, but perhaps charge points for electric cars should be at or near the rear ? Some cars they already are, like the "Smart" although that car is so short that the front and rear aren't far apart anyway :) It is my understanding (although I don't know for sure) that in places which get REALLY cold, and where windscreen defosting and demisting is crucial, like minus 30 Celcius cold, like Chicago etc, that Fire engines and Ambulances sometimes have the electric supply socket for their coolant "block heater" mounted by the rear bumper. That way if they zoom out on an emergency call and they forgot to unplug it, the worst that happens is an electrical extension cord gets yanked a bit.

    Snowy, icy Mitcheldean! Well done on getting around the Forest after 8 inches of snow that weekend. I wonder if the weight of EVs help getting grip in the snow? Winter tyres would of helped too, obviously.

    @stedavid13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Sounds strange, but are you running your A/C at all?
    From what I remember, lots of owners didn't because they thought "Why would you?" but the way it's designed is that it's supposed to run even when you're heating as it'll remove the moisture out of the air. If you get a chance, run your car while it's plugged in with the A/C option on and see if that helps remove some of that moisture build up you got going on.

      @IanSampsonRLO  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah works for me (just put it on for when I leave the office in 5 mins)....except frustratingly when its really cold, and 15 minutes before you want to leave in the morning...it doesnt lol. One day they will be able to cope with the 'rush hour' load on the servers. Another app might work during busy periods (unless it ultimately leads it to go through their servers). I am always amazed how often it times out during the busy period, its no change from 4 years ago.

      there's an option to put it on a timer in the app. I do that quite a lot, saves me from having to stare at the phone for 5 minutes.

    • @IanSampsonRLO
      @IanSampsonRLO  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah timer works...if you leave at a set time each day. If I did that would be the solution, but sometimes I can leave an hour early or 30 mins later etc etc, so makes the time no good for my needs. Luckily its rarely iced up, so can just not worry about nissan server loads lol

    Merry Christmas to you and the family Ian... On the subject of remote pre heat start etc I use Leaf Manager app (Connected to 'Europe') and have not had an issue for well over a year now - I used it twice daily during the recent cold snap. Luckily very little snow round our way - just a light dusting that didn't settle (but did also reach -5)... Bruce looks very much at home in the snow - you know you want to :D., better hide the harness from Amy though! Sorry to hear about the war wounds but at least nobody was hurt...

    Cant be sure about cabin moisture, but first thing to ask would be is recirculation engaged?

  • @larslarsen6286
    @larslarsen6286 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding your moisture in the car. You should not be using the A/C in the winter, even if you would think that it is the best way to get rid of moisture in the air. The A/C leaves a bit of moisture in the system when it's turned off and the problem get worse and worse.
    So i was told to use normal heat and just air out a little bit when moisture is in the air from clothes etc.
    When you get rid of the moisture first time it off cause takes a long time but i have no problems with moisture in my leaf now. You can then use your A/C from time to time to get rid of the moisture, but let the heat stay on for some time after you shut off the A/C.

    • @IanSampsonRLO
      @IanSampsonRLO  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lars Larsen that would be lovely...but heat on for 2 hours did nothing to touch it sadly! Tried to dry it out with no luck. Will have to get a dehumidifier and run a cable and leave it in the car one weekend and keep emptying it until the moisture is all pullled out. Pretty sure it will be bucket loads.

    • @larslarsen6286
      @larslarsen6286 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ian Sampson
      Because you have so much moisture i will take much longer time to get rid of it with the cars heater. So either park it inside a heated garage with door open for some days or use a dehumidifier machine. But i bet that after you get rid of the moisture and only use A/C when really needed you will see that the A/C i much more effective. So you can maybe use A/C once and the you have to only use normal heat the next few times and open windows a bit to let out moisture if it accurs. In summer it's normally no problem.

    • @larslarsen6286
      @larslarsen6286 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ian Sampson i don't use auto function either. It doesn't regulate proper, a lot of the times it regulate air down to your feet, when you want the air up and the fan speed is set to low by the system. So go fully manual and turn off A/C right away when it comes on to defrost windshield.
      A way you can get rid of a lot of the moisture is the let the car be turned on with close to max heat and then open the windows slightly so you have a high temperature in the car but also let out the moistured air. You have to open windows to let out moisture when not using A/C, that is important.
      So i only use A/C when the family is in the car and moisture appears, because then i don't have time to fool around.
      Sorry to put so many details into it, but for me it was very important for my enjoyment of the car, so maybe others will find the information useful and don't think it won't work, it just takes some time until the car is totally dry inside.

      @ncbhtc 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The moisture problem is not related to using the AC, yes some moisture will enter the vehicle after shutdown but providing the system is fully topped up with gas (hence less moisture in the system) you'd expect some misting of the glass, just as it would with no AC system in colder weather.
      Has the AC every been serviced in the last 4 years?
      The problem you have is due to the water leak, the carpet looks bad enough in its self but the leak has been there awhile if I recall from previous videos?
      Under the carpet you'll find 1-2 inches of foam padding, likely to be carrying around a good few litres water by now, probably spread to the entire carpet. The only fix will be get the carpet out and do a proper dry out, the carpet will probably be scrap.
      Best get it fully valeted before giving it back to the lovely Arval, otherwise expect a nice bill.

      Generally with ICE cars it is a good practice to fire up the air con occasionally during winter to keep the seals lubricated to stop them cracking and hence leaking refrigerant - I am guessing that the LEAF aircon follows similar principles... The LEAF does seem a little prone to misting at the best of times but this amount does imply a leak somewhere (wet carpet syndrome) rather than wet hair or wet dog...

    Ian, in New Hampshire this is what normal life for me is like from November until March. I currently have 11 inches in my yard. Our roads are plowed and passable within hours of the storm, unless it's a blizzard. I didn't realize England got this type of weather. Where are you located, and is this much snow common though out winter? Doesn't public services clear your roads? Also, did I miss what your plans are ... until your Zoe is delivered? Oh, and If you get stuck in the snow again, just have Bruce pull you, it's in his blood!

    • @IanSampsonRLO
      @IanSampsonRLO  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol yeah he could pull the car if he wanted! We did joke about getting a sled!

      Hello from the USA. A high-volt Hybrid or Electric Car's battery-pack is never allowed to go below 50 ish-60%actual full charge to prolong Battery Life. So the battery gauge in actuality represents the split-difference. And Rapid-Charging any Battery: Lithium,Nickle,Lead,etc......even with the coolant circuits to keep the Battery-Pack at optimum temperature.....Fast Charging any Battery is Murder....depletes its overall lifespan by years. A neighbor of mine went to Harbor Freight (discount tool place with most the stuff from China).....she spent $300.00 for two 100 watt solar chargers and a hooptie Harbor Frieght $40.00 bucks Inverter.....she rarely ever has to hookup to her house or elsewhere when she uses her Leaf for work/errands. Her work does not have a Charging station/or nearby 110volt outlet...so she just lays one Harbor Freight Solar panel on the back parcel with the inverter that goes to the Leaf's 12 volt battery as the buffer to the charging Port.....and charges it up at work,etc.Surprising (Harbor Freight stuff can be sketchy); almost 3 years later those solar panels and Inverter never let her down.

    • @IanSampsonRLO
      @IanSampsonRLO  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah sure do, but found that sometimes it would be running for 30 minutes or more (at around 3kw) as sometimes get held up leaving OR leave earlier, so its doesnt really work for me. (If the car is unplugged - unusual - then it only runs for 15mins....and so its almost always cold when its set on this for me...either get in earlier or get in 10 mins after).

    6 stops for 160 miles? So less than 30 miles between charge??

    • @IanSampsonRLO
      @IanSampsonRLO  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      6 stops - 5 Rapids. (The slow post can be almost discounted, it only gave 5.5kw's into the battery as was not on that long). Left the office on 67%, got to cheltnham (charge 1 on 32%), then on the final 5th Rapid Charge I left on around 62% I think from memory. Range was really bad on the motorway, 0 and -1c and fully loaded env200. Think the temp had a LOT to do with it (plus it wasnt quite just 80 miles each way in the end as the m4 was closed and had a diversion (but only added around 10 miles each way onto the journey)

    few observations, 1 why didnt you clear your car fully of snow before move off your drivway onto a public road?? 2. lowering your tyre pressures for slush is pointless just buy winter tyres or all season tyres 3. absolutely shocking scene of blocking a roadway to adjust tyres, your forward planning is so poor its laughable. fail to prepare prepare to fail.

    • @IanSampsonRLO
      @IanSampsonRLO  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lol, calm it down dear Graham, the roads were 'closed' - except people with stuck children and 4x4's. 2. without tires put down it would never have made it, comment only if you were there in the situation, making assertions based on no knowledge of the situation apart from a few videos is not enough grounds to make a well rounded calculation on what should or shouldn't be done.
      Road was NOT blocked by me (blocked would denote no other way to pass), although it was blocked by the snow and fallen trees. You are right though, ignore the fact that a pedestrian is in the road, beep your horn and plow on regardless. Lol, thats the shocking part....trying to run someone over...thats shocking. Letting air out of tires where there was no where else to do so on that point of the journey - .that's less shocking, sssheeeesshhh priorities.
      Luckily your last point proves that I must have prepared....as no failure occurred - unless "fail to prepare prepare to fail." is not a worthwhile saying? Catch you later Mr Perfect ;)
