    What blows my mind the most is the sheer scale of these clouds. Take the left pillar, at around 4 light years long, that equates to over 250'000 times the distance from earth to the sun. To make that figure easier to relate to; I have a picture of the "Pillars of Creation" where the left pillar is almost exactly 400 pixels long. At that scale I realised that every pixel of the image was large enough to hold our solar system (to Neptune) laid flat like a penny, 100 times in a 10x10 grid. That makes each pixel of such an image 60 Billion Miles a side. The Pillar is around 94 Trillion Miles high, and yet its a tiny spec in a galaxy, which itself is a tiny spec in the observable universe. I still can't quite get my head around that level of enormity!

      1 light year is just at 5.87 trillion miles. if it is 4 light years in length how did you arrive at the 94 trillion miles in distance for the left pillar?

    The fact that the pillars might not exist as of now is fascinating. Due to the enormous distance between us and the pillars, light takes years to reach us, so we are literally seeing in the past

      time is just part of space,the entire universe is in a superposition,and we enjoy a tiny view of whats realy out there,MOST of what we see is not there,and whats realy there is emmiting light thats has still not reached us,but from some other point of view its visible,so all of it exists at the same time realy,as all events ever to happen are from some point of view visible

      ***** It's difficult and basically damn near impossible for humans to comprehend just how vast our universe is. It never ceases to amaze me everytime I look up at the night sky, I think to myself just how far the light I'm seeing traveled, and the dates of origin of all the light I can see in the starry sky. Spacetime is an incredible medium, of which, we might barely know 1% of the total mass and energy spread out over quadrillion and quadrillions miles.

    Really breathtaking and also breath stopping when you will learn how long these pillars are. Hold your breath, the central pillar is 41 trillion kilometres in length. A lot of people cannot even comprehend that length. Just for comparison the distance between the Sun and our planet is mere 150 million kilometres. These are called pillars of creation because they will result into formation of new stars and left over material will form planets. May be looking at these pillars takes us back to time when our own Solar system was created about 5 billion years ago.

      They are not doctored as such but they are not what we can see with the naked eye. They are very feint in real time so long exposures are used to build up the images. They can be in visible light, as we see things, or in other parts of the spectrum such as x-ray and infra red. This allows scientists to see different parts of the structures which are not obvious in just visible light. I have always been sad that we cannot just look through a telescope and see these wonders as they appear in the pictures but for now we will just have to admire their beauty in these images. Hope this helps.

    The nebula, in my opinion, are stars that simply blur when the spiral moves and we don't see clear points, but the brightness of Andromeda stars is very high, so we see their general glow. The same thing happens in the centers of all galaxies, at the birth of stars, where their concentration is off the scale

    Huh? I'm prettysure that famous Hubble picture of the colourful _Pillars of Creation_ is *NOT* solely a visible light image, it's a false colour image.
    The Hubble camera which took the image can see not just visible light but also ultraviolet and IR, and these wavelengths were integrated into the result to make a more spectacular composite FALSE COLOUR image.
    The new camera which took the new image can see more of the IR spectrum, but the original image captured some IR as well.

    Around two thirds down the tallest column is a calmly sleeping cat. The massive star, just above, seeming to highlight it, I think you would need to be blind to miss it. It is also visible in most spectra, if you look. In the visible spectrum, you can also make out what appears to be a couple of cats sharing a mutual bath. The best shot though is the cat perched at the top of that same pillar at 3:31, to which Jonny referred. Though we can only see the head and upper back in the visible spectrum, when the picture changes to infrared, feline features are distinct. As the poem says, "Cats sleep anywhere!"

    • @ElronLaVey
      @ElronLaVey 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      IB Hunter light pressure? Like photons? How is that even possible in the vacuum of space?
      How can light 💡 build pressure ? Unless I’m miss understanding what your saying?

    • @IBHunter
      @IBHunter 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elron LaVey it is not pressure like air pressure or water pressure. It is more like an exchange in momentum. Is is sometimes called radiation pressure. A google search of light pressure or radiation pressure, will result in a number of articles that go into great detail!
      Very basically when, when an object in the vacuum of space is hit on one side with a large amount of light and the other side has none, it will experience a very slight push. This push is used by some satellites to help stabilize their orientation. There are some satellites that use solar sails to move from one orbit to another. The the actual detail of how the pressure is generated is much more involved in a subatomic scale, but in a macro scale it acts similar to a very slight wind of light.
      If you would like to learn more about it, I suggest reading more than one article, because they explain the details differently, and one may make it easier to understand than an other.
