Nice, that is awesome, finally I can focus on important stuff like texting, playing a game on my phone or checking the stocks while doing a steep uphill climb or a technical descend!
A system like that is reactive whereas a good rider is proactive. Good for noobs I guess. The one feature that genuinely looks useful is the ability to shift while keeping the pedals level. This could be handy if you are going downhill through a gnarly section and you know that there is a punchy climb coming up, you could shift down, ready for the climb without having to risk clipping your pedals.
@@mremtb7689 You can’t use the word “react” and then say it’s proactive. I would shift down before I even got to the climb and you can bet I would avoid crunching the gears like they did in the demo.

Linear progression is one thing where a semi-smart power ratio dilemma can be solved easily. However, the instantaneous progression over obstacles is quite a different story. If you can have both running simultaneously, using both modes, or all 3-simultaneously. So manual and terrain settings might make it worthwhile. If he said it’s possible, I didn’t hear that.
I’m stoked on this new tech, got me thinking of selling my current EMTB and buying this new one.. but I will give it a year for any bugs to be worked out first, until then shred on..
I tried one yesterday and, while I liked it a lot in manual mode, I was less than happy about its gear decisions in A1. On a decent gravel road I went from a nice downhill gradient around a curve to a similar uphill. The A1 setting kept me in 9th gear struggling uphill where I would have expected 4th or even 3d gear. I kept waiting for it to shift and finally went manual to 3d. If the rain lets up I'll give it another go today.
This looks amazing ! What I have not yet seen on any review of these type of systems is Battery life and how to recharge them or are they replaceable batteries . Otherwise an awesome test !
This gotta be the future, is the battery pretty small hopefully? This turns every bike into nearly a car in ease of use, or put this in one of those carbikes velomobiles, obviously, been wondering when this would come out and very glad it has. Congrats and great work!
I’m waiting for Shimano cues. Supposedly they will exclusively feature link glide. And if this video tells me anything, it’s that link glide is exceptionally good at shifting under load.
the psi on the chain linkage must me immense on some changes, because it will change gear as you would expect, but at times you might not expect it, still a great tool to help you
Looks great! Definitely the future. But it sounds way rougher on component’s than manual at the moment. I am sure I will have this sometime in the future
I can see the autoshift and freeshift being useful, especially on commuter and cargo bike applications. Not sure autoshift is something I would like on an eMTB though. I upgraded my eMTB to SRAM Transmission and shifting under load has been great feature when I shift late. Hoping to see a more robust/waterproof and serviceable Shimano EPxxx series motor in the future. If not here's hoping aftermarket motors designed to fit Shimano motor mounts become a thing. C'mon Bosch, get it done! :-)
Rode a cargo bike Urban Arrow with auto shifting (not shimano) in my past job, it works really smooth, but I miss the sound of my rapid fire shifters. Also when I normally shift I reduce the power I put on the pedals so the chain can go over smoothly, which is pretty much impossible to time right with auto shifting
so when i manually shift as im climbing i can time it so i take off some pedal pressure. How does this system NOT lead to that horrible gear grinding and destruction of your equipment. I know its more durable, but i cant imagine its good for it when you are pressing hard up a hill and it just shifts anytime it wants. otherwise, sounds really neat.
I was wondering the same thing. I think all this system does is you don't need to press the shifter trigger anymore but the gear change will remain exactly the same as manual shifting.
I've been looking for a link that has this bike listed with all the auto shift features on it but am unable to find anything with cost or models that have this. Is there a link to this bike and cost. Thank you
Very nice but there sounds to be a lot of banging coming from that drive train changing gear under full load, I wonder if we are about to have a chain snapping epidemic 🤔😬
Hello eMBN, do you know if it will be possible to mount the new Di2 XT 12 speed on bikes with EP8 (DU-EP800)? Of course without Free/Auto shift as DU-EP801 is needed. Thx
Now i could see this being useful for the kids, cant count the amount of times I have to resue a kid fallen on a hill, and get to them and they are still in 7th and never shifted down. Could be alright for bikepacking type rides but like driving a truck I would likely want to shift myself and get frustrated when it shifts at times, hate autoshift on trucks.

This is Canyon's Neuron:ON from a year or so ago 😁
So when is the “linechoice” button is coming out, and don't forget the bunnyhop lever.
But hey, I guess some folks found shifting pretty hefty stuff. 😅
SRAM released T-Type transmission and now Shimano automatic transmission? Competition is great!
I wish I had the option of buying free shift for an mtb not just emtb.
Next in line: auto-pedaling
lol
It's all cool and that, I love technology and everything to make things better, easier, more reliable, long lasting, etc......but hey, sometimes you need to ask, does it make really a big difference to your riding?...I still have to try it...But the real problem is cost, bicycles are costing more than motorbikes with all that...
How much?
Forget it!
Can anyone help me please, I’ve upgraded my Husqvarna HC 5 to have Shimano auto/free shift with a linkguide 11 speed cassette however it makes what I’d consider to be louder gear downshift cracks, as I go uphills than are on this test video.. Has anyone any ideas how I can make my uphill changes sound less painful?
Downhill free shifting is awesome!
NICE REVIEW
I thought you weren't supposed to change gear while under power?
...my Shimano drive train already "auto-shifts" ... It's just not always useful having the derailleur shift into a harder gear when you hit a hectic uphill.
chain on the e-bike in the video is inverted
Only a good idea if they implement a continuous gear system. You really don't want the gears shifting without warning under load. Plus it's an unnecessary strain on the drivetrain.
