By the way, there’s a glaring error in the music. Bar 8b (2nd x bar) the first chord in the r.h. should have a Db not Eb. That’s obviously what was intended. Fits basic jazz theory…
I think you're absolutely right John. Whilst the chord shocked me when I read it, I didn't suspect a printing error, but rather that I needed to expand my ear's expectations! Db makes FAR better sense - flat 9. Thanks so much for drawing our attention to this. A friend has the book - and I think I'm about to order it too - and I've asked him to check there.
@@JulianLambert it's only in some editions, I think. I have a copy of the ABRSM G4 music and it's correct in that one. One of my pupils has the other version where it's wrong.
@@JulianLambert it's a nice piece (and it's so brilliant to start seeing so many pieces by women composers appearing in the ABRSM syllabus - as well as on R3 - and from other centuries too...now we're beginning to find out just how many women composers there were, who have been airbrushed out of history) but it is, to be honest, a little generic, as jazz harmony goes. So it was always going to be a straight C13b9 chord, going to Fmaj, rather than a rather strange Cm9 chord going to F.
Ah, it's wrong in my ABRSM G4 booklet, it sounds as though it's been spotted and corrected though. It is indeed a D flat in the Portraits in Jazz (OUP) book. I think I may re-record it, it'll be a pleasure!
My teacher had one with audio , I had the other! She was saying “can you see the e flat…me saying “no, looks like Db” she saying it’s e me thinking I was worse than I am!!
PS..can you do one hand at a time??? 😊
Really lovely Julian! Enjoyed hearing this!
Thank you so much Catherine.
Thank you for your video, I’m studying for my grade 4 and I’ve chosen this piece, if I can play it half as well as you I’ll be happy 😂
I'm SURE you will. You might enjoy playing it with a backing track when you play it at home. Here's a videoth-cam.com/video/yyjHXCfDPWA/w-d-xo.html
Thank you! I’ll be sure to check it out!
I mean an error in the score, not in your playing, obviously… 😊
😄 thx! I produced a backing track for Billie's Song th-cam.com/video/yyjHXCfDPWA/w-d-xo.html and did, I'm pleased to say, get the band to play a C7 in bar 8b.
