An astounding feat to survive such a scenario. It's crazy that saving them these days would be like, a few short helicopter rides to the island and back. No sweat.
Search and rescue within 24 hours. HUGE difference :P
They were givin everything they needed to survive
Would they be there in the first place.
@FrancoAii that was my thought also as with modern maps and navigation the need for the rescue likely wouldn't be needed but still even today they have stuff go wrong and the is places still without access to these things (although they likely only small boats).

It's quite problematic that it seems we only function well under pressure.
Even in a single one an obstacle releases some resistance, like when i was for half a year bound to the wheeel chair. I guess i haven't been so much outdoors as then (except work), you start to fight against this uncomfortable situation.
But the crazy thing is that in it lies a big danger, i can abuse this human behave for mass manipulation.
It's the classic setup, create an enemy image this will unite my ppl.
It will force them to do almost incredible things since all have a common target now.
And the "positive" results will drive it almost by itself, but one can call this fascism, i mean that it is.
That's a strong weakness if you think about.
But it isn't if you are aware of this weakness.

I do appreciate your enthusiasm and energy you give the stories. A forgotten (almost) gift passed down through countless generations is the one of storytelling. It isn't as easy for people to pick up, it takes time, practice, and the ability to make other people "see" the events of the story. Keep up the good work, and pass it on!
The timing of this video is crazy!
I have been homeless a long time but for the past 5 years I have enjoyed a bit of stability as I lived in a small shed type building I built myself. I have worked and during covid was invaluable.
And then comes the eviction notice.

I wonder if those 7 survivors have any descendants alive today
lol
They must. Definitely a muddled bloodline by now tho
Would certainly be interesting to find out.
The survivors were 7 women and an 8 month old infant. That means the last man survivor on the island died some time in the previous 17 months.
I wonder why only women survived. Seems somewhat odd.
Yes I'd like to know what happened, I suppose none of the survivors wrote a book about it. Maybe all the men killed each other with continual fights, and the women finished the last one off cos he was a pr*ck 😂
What happened to the rescued women? What a pity nobody thought to ask them how they survived for so long.
That’s what I was thinking. After all the effort to finally get them you would think there was some news report or some documentation of there story somewhere.
Thank you for not forgetting their story
Never heard of this story before, those poor slaves didn't deserve this, they should never have been taken in the first place but they shown amazing strength to survive and hopefully this story will be told for more years to come. They're such an inspiration. ❤
How do you know they didn’t deserve it? I mean they probably didn’t. However, just automatically assuming that they were perfectly innocent is guessing.

@@3FourFour5 OMG THIS MAKES SM SENSE THANK YOU
You expect us to believe there was a Latin word for the internet!
Loren Ipsum ( look it up) is the default text that typesetters have been using since the 50s. It was popularized by advertisements for Letraset transfer sheets. It is thought to be a corruption of a Cicero passage from the 1st century.
Remember “ The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog”? Like that for long text and layout packages.
LI was introduced to the digital world in the mid-1980s, when Aldus employed it in graphic and word-processing templates for its desktop publishing program PageMaker. Pages and Microsoft Word, have since adopted Lorem ipsum, LaTeX and web content managers such as Joomla! and WordPress, and CSS libraries such as Semantic UI.
The graphic design world it is simply referred to as “Loren Ipsum”
Also, doesn’t really mean that. There is no Latin word for Internet. I think it’s an inside joke from the team behind Google translate.
Lorem is short for Delorem and the phrase loosely translates into “the pain of an average man”

I do wish Thoughty would figure out the art of creating a sensible segway into promotional blurb for a sponsor - often having no association with the theme of the video - or put these at the start or end. A fascinating history that shows the "slaves" had more knowledge and warewithal than the "masters". Excellent work Thoughty2! Thanks!
I mean, your heart is in the right place but the “masters” built a boat and spent those 15 years back home In France while the slaves lived stranded on an island dying off one at a time. You did hear the story right? Also do you know how quotation marks work… they were in fact slaves.
@@joeyalen275 They weren't allowed to build a boat with the finest salvage because the "masters" took it all for themselves and left. But the "slaves" thrived anyway where the " masters" would have resorted to cannibalism. The quotation marks are there because they weren't actual slaves but people stolen illegally and not yet sold or indentured. "Masters" were anything but. DID YOU WATCH THE EPISODE?

I put in a few hours to dig for more answers and it turns out there were 14 survivors in total. And that 18 of the people left on this island by the French did leave in another crafted boat a few years earlier. Noone knows if they made it and then there was one that left with like 6 people 15 months before they got saved off that place that did not make it for sure as there was a French guy on that one and had they made it we'd know. The fire turned out to not ha been burning all that time also, in the last expedition there to dig they found tools to make fire with. Also 1/3 of the surviving (off the ship) slaves died the first month because before the well was dug after one month the French did not share any water with the slaves and kept it guarded in their camp. 88 made it off the ship, slaves. 120 French. All of the French survived. About 30 slaves died of dehydration in days and few weeks directly after the wreck. At least 24 tried to leave none of which isco firmed to have made it. Only two has been found buried on the island yet but in the 1800s a sailor inspected the place and reported that there was a bunch of graves made that time since has erased so that pretty much takes care of the head count I guess. But still, what happened is not known in detail. The surviving women and child got freed and disappeared into the black community soon after their rescue with Noone knowing anything about them. The kid got adopted by the governor that sent the rescue ship in the end but it was more like a pet adoption than a child as he was lost... Later as a child, presumably when the he moved back to France he just left him behind. So Noone knows or could follow up on this story through the survivors. That's pretty much what is known. The French were not very keen on documenting this one might imagine. The slave trade in the Indian ocean was outlawed by all European nations since before this happened so the ship was an illegal slave transport done illegally by a company. And the reason most slaves died in the wreck was that their deck was not possible to open. It was not locked but nailed closed so all slaves was left behind by the French who all survived. 72 slaves died in the wreck, 88 made it out when the ship got torn in half the second day. They got no help to the island though so most of those who died did so because they were taken from a mountain area far from the ocean so none of them could swim. The 80m from the ship to the island for them was enough for most of the 72 that died the first 24 hours to die when trying to get to dry land without help. 2 got cut in half as the ship after it was torn in half slammed back together with everywave making the wreck into a bit of a hazard. A few drowned early on but most of the slave deck was above water they just could not get out. And the French only tried to get them out for a very short time before they left them. Later when the ship was empty they went back to it though for supplies. So yeah, we don't know a lot because it was an illegal transport of slaves by the French that acted a LOT worse than it sounded like in this video. And it was not far to go to resque them for the French. A mere 2-3 days sail. But they still didn't go those 2-3 days to get them for 15 years. So, since all survivors ended up on French colonial territory as much information about the events as possible got buried. The women were interviewed the only info from their stories about luge on the island that the French made public was that 18 people built a boat and tried to make it off the island many years before the rescue. Of course they were asked about a lot as 3 of the women lived in the governor estate for quite some time after their rescue and it is impossible this was not something people asked them about a lot. Nothing made it out of there though. Which can only be because of that information painting the French in a horrible light. 15 years! With 2-3 days to go there and save them, sure the actions of the sailors was bad but those 15 years was only because the governor did not want to tie up a ship for a hole week when he could use it to make profitable transports of goods instead. Noone was charged with illegal trade and transport of the slaves even after. Nor was the company. The French stayed on the island for 2 months with zero deaths. When the well was finished they still had water left from the ship, under guard in a tent in the white camp. That alone cost 30 slaves their lives. 15 years! 2-3 days away without getting rescued...
PLEASE stop with the AI thumbnails
