    Hey RJ... Just wanted you to know one of your videos helped me out a lot, actually more then that. My shimano acera RD-M360 derail-er broke on my way home from one job and I had to be at my night job by 1700. that only gave me two hours. If I had to walk to work I only had about an hour. Any way... the clip that holds the guide wheels on the derail-er popped off and it was just hanging down. Luckily it was mostly down hill all the way home. When I got home I pulled the derail-er off and luckily the clip fell out and was still around, but I didn't know how to put the spring back on and slid it in then put the clip on. There were no screws that I could see to take it apart to put the clip back on. I was getting very anxious...so I had to sit down and calm down . so I started a search on that derail-er, (tear down instruction, manual,...etc. Couldn't really find anything useful. Did a search on TH-cam on derailers and came across your video "how to fix derailleur with a slipped cage. It is 1610...and I leave for work at 1630 and thanks to you I don't have to walk to work and back at 2200, because I fixed the bike with your help! So....Thank you very much!!! I just wanted you to know that you helped someone out that was in a jam that you never met and don't even know! Again Thank you!!! When there is a story like this I think people should be told and praised. I just wish the whole world was like that. I think it is getting there slow but sure. Well...got to change clothes and go without a shower because I wanted to write this to you and Thank you!! Have a great year and keep up what you are doing, it does make a difference in peoples lives even if they don't tell you.

    Actually did this on my Shimano Sora rear derailleur slightly newer model because the cage was badly misaligned and I tried to bend it back but I can't quite get it right so instead I replaced the cage with a shimano tourney cage as the post has the same length as the stock cage so I installed it and it worked like a charm. I can even install a large jockey wheel on it if I want to. Thanks for the tutorial, RJ.

    Is it possible to follow this method to change the derailleur cage? Like converting a long cage to short cage or even putting a carbon cage with oversized jockey wheels?

  • @simonbailey2151

    I just performed this repair on a 10-speed Tiagra derailleur.
    Instead of the plastic cover and C-clip retainer, it has a 2.5mm recessed Hex/Allen screw, which makes removal much easier.
    I jammed the mech slightly ´open´ by putting a flat-bladed screwdriver through the main spring, rather than putting it in a vice.
    The inner spring was the problem. On the tapered end, the ´tab´ that goes through the hole by the top jockey wheel was bent slightly beyond 90°. Once I bent it back to 90°, so perpendicular to the coils of the spring, it stayed in position when reassembled and the repair held.
    Hope this is useful for someone.

    This is some pretty hardcore bike maintenance!
    I have an old rear derailleur that jumps gear whenever the pedaling gets heavier. I was thinking that the same issue with your RD is the cause of my RD jumping gears. Those stoppers were worn out on my RD as well. But since you mentioned they don't really matter once the chain is pulling down on them, I'm starting to think something else must be causing the jumping of gears.
    Maybe you guys have any ideas I might have missed out on? Thank you :)

    By this process...is it actually possible to install oversized pulley wheel cage/ swap derailleur cage on my shimano sora RD?

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why? Just the the derailleur as is, or get a different derailleur.

  • @junaidgt90
    @junaidgt90 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the same issue with my shimano tourney bought used. Its slips past the stopper then i have to remove the deraileur and dial it back forcing it over the partially worn out stopper.
    Im thinking of strapping a zip-tie so that the head of the zip-tie acts as a stopper and will add some drops of super glue to hold in place....got nothing to lose. Also the shaft that was removed in the video; mine feels a bit wobbly/loose.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Replace the derailleur then with a new one. Tourney's aren't too expensive.

    6:32 maybe chain was too long and as it bounced around the reraileur cage hit too much in that stopper ?

  • @brucewernick6542

    Nobody seems to recondition the pinned hinges. The hinges of my Shimano Deore 7 speed rear derailleur are badly worn, allowing the pulley cage way too much flexibility. What do you think of knocking the pins out and re-pinning with a bigger diameter pin?

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      At that point, replace it.

    Hey, Would vintage shimano 105 derailleurs work with modern 2 by 7 brifters?

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably.

    • @slippingsnake
      @slippingsnake 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, older deriailleurs work with newer shifters (I've mounted a 1990 Deore DX with 3x9 shifters) because they use the same 1:2 ratio of lever/cable pull.
      But pre-index derilleurs (before 1987/88??) use an upper pully that will not center on the choosen gear, also if older derilleurs are slightly bend, worn out or have a low spring tension they can cause trouble.
