  • I have loved Bleeding Hearts since I was a child. They are one of my favorite flowers with their unique and gorgeous heart-shaped blooms and beautiful foliage. (If only they came out during Valentines). In addition they will provide blooms in deep shade and actually prefer morning sun for around 3-4 hours and afternoon shade. In more mild climates you can get away with more sunlight. They are a pretty versatile perennial and can grow in full sun, but will die off and go dormant sooner. Keep them moist, not soggy. They are great for cutting and come out about the same-time as your spring bulbs and will make beautiful bouquets. I love this plant and will always love this plant because it is a timeless beauty for shady areas. I would love if you subscribed! Hit the like button if you liked it!

I’ve always wanted to try them out and I am wanting them to disappear in the summer so I know exactly where to plant them now. So happy I found this video-thank you!

I'm in Zone 4 (northern Maine) and I have a bleeding heart that's about 3 years old. It came in one of those pots that sort of dissolve in the dirt but it only gets to be about 8" tall and that's it! lol It has flowers and all but can't grow any taller. Could that be because the pot didn't dissolve all the way and the roots are unable to spread?? Should I dig it up and replant it? Thanks in advance!

Yes. I would dig it up and check out the roots. It definitely could be root bound. Mine are pretty resilient to transplanting. They do die off and go dormant in mid-late summer over here with the heat if they are in a sunnier spot. In shadier spots it’s seems the leaves last a bit longer.

@@FlowerFanatic Thanks so much! I will dig it up tomorrow and see what's going on. If there's any leftover pot down there, I'll take that away and we'll see what happens next spring. Thanks again!

I knew it was going to be a challenge, but I couldn’t resist purchasing seeds for black and white bleeding hearts. I tried to find a live plant/root but here I am. It’s probably late in the season to start germinating too but I have to try 😂

we apparently live in a a 10a zone.. We dont have many shady areas on our property.. How to I keep the plant my grandma bought from dieing... Like the orchids she keeps buying..

Your best bet would be to put it on a north side. Coldest spot of your home to try and mimic a colder zone. They are heat tolerant up to zone 9. You could give in ice in winter haha. That’s extreme. Make sure it doesn’t get a lot of sun and hopefully it would winter over. They go dormant in late summer over here. That’s normal for them to die off early in the season.

I purchased two of them for my zone 6b garden and they were live plants. How do I know what it looks like when it comes out of the ground? I don't want to mistake it for a weed! I bought them as a plant because I thought it would be easier to see them come out of the ground. Do they come up like a Hosta does from the ground? Little points out of the ground? Thanks for a wonderful video. I do love them -- perhaps I will have to buy the bare roots. Where did you get your bare roots?

Hey. I can highlight them for you. My bare roots are taking off in the greenhouse and even producing a few cute flowers. They are ready to get in the ground. My ferns on the other hand are taking there time.

I got my bare roots at Home Depot. They are so easy to grow as bare roots. I have kept them at about 55-60 degrees and kept them moist. I love them.
