    LOVE this band. I was born too late to see them live but at least we get to see them on film forever! Cass and Denny both were truly gifted singers - and John a truly gifted songwriter. Michelle was very pretty up there and her light soprano was sweet although hard to hear next to the powerful voices of the lead singers.

    • @johnzuijdveld9585
      @johnzuijdveld9585 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If you listen carefully you can recognize Michelle's voice in the higher notes that I'm sure most ppl. think is coming from Cass who had a great/strong voice but she did not have the vocal range that Michelle had, check her and John as the 'Journeymen' later Denny joined them from a struggling band where Cass also sang, forming the 'New Journeymen.'
      It was when Denny finally convinced John (who never favored Cass) to let her audition for them that John agreed and they renamed to the Mama's and the Papa's.
      Cass completed the harmonics of the group and John esp. and Mitch. knew just how to make the best use of their combined talents, the rest is sadly a short but glorious history.

I live them so much and Cass got a bad rap! As you see John even referred to her as a mushroom and Michelle as a princess! The rimor of her dying from a ham sandwich is horrible! You can also watch a biography on TH-cam of Cass! It’s really good! It’s so sad they are all gone except Michelle! Cass• daughter makes sure her mamas legion is carried in! I don’t believe we ever found out who her father was.. some people speculate it was David Crosby.

    • @Zenbone65
      @Zenbone65 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      +mitzworld It's so unfortunate this performance is apparently the only one ever captured on tape, yet it was under unusual circumstances.. They had no time to rehearse--- Denny flew in at the last moment; John and Michelle were occupied with the festival administration; not all of the musicians were part of their usual touring band; and Jimi Hendrix 's band that preceded them left the stage tattered. That may have been the reason for Michelle's technical issues with her mike.
      With discernible ears you can pick up her voice in some songs, especially in some of the passages where it's just Cass and Michelle singing. But in some numbers her voice is entirely absent, though the video clearly shows her singing her heart out. In the few instances where she talks into the mike, it's very obvious that mike is barely working.
      Cass and Denny are the powerhouse singers; John and Michelle are the special ingredients that create their unique harmonic chemistry. Despite all the issues surrounding their Monterey performance, it has moments where it all comes together.
      Between 1966 and 1967 they performed about thirty-something shows, backed by members of the Wrecking Crew. It's hard to believe that none of those shows were professionally filmed or recorded, or at the very least bootlegs. I'm still hoping someone somewhere discovers some recordings. There isn't even any significant amount of photos, reviews or documented accounts of their road shows. I understand that they were predominately a studio group. But in their brief existence they were a somewhat active live act. It's that part of their history that I find so intriguing, but so frustratingly elusive.

      +mitzworld Michelle's microphone was not working? I was thinking that her voice - much as I love her - was simply overpowered by the REAL singers on stage - namely Cass and Denny. She had a light soprano and was going to be hard to hear anyway next to Cass's powerful voice.

      in Michelle's book she said they sang off key that night and I've always wondered if they just mixed her down for the film. the bass playing was by Joe Osborn who played on all their records and was usually spot on. not this night tho. check out Laura Nyro doing Poverty Train on YT. I think he kinda messes that one up too.

    Definitely MY favorite 'harmony group' ppl. seem to think it was just a Cass and Denny show but the power in the band came from John and Michelle, the writers who had been quite successful before adding them to their group. The harmonizing combinations of the variety of voices was what made the group a success NOT any one individual. Very sad that it had to end and that it ended the way it did, they had promised so much more and we a poorer for that loss. 😭

    For the most part, that is a very good on-stage performance. They had a problem many groups had at the time. Very hard to match the recorded sound they would get in the studio. John Phillips skill in mixing their sound rivaled that of Brian Wilson or Phil Spector. Problem is, there were usually six to eight vocal tracks on their recordings due to over-dubbing and "doubling." The arrangements are first class and the harmonies were great. Listen to most of their songs from the studio and you can hear how they expanded their sound. It was a wonderful sound, but almost impossible to duplicate on stage. With today's technology, it's not difficult to provide, digitally, backing tracks, over dubs and doubling. I don't know that John Phillips ever received the credit he deserved for his studio techniques.

      With all that said, they still sound incredible live. It's not less, just different. and live to boot. I think John Phillips was the american genius of the 60's. They were our Beatles. Hendrix, Dylan the Doors the Lovin Spoonful, Motown were way up there. I just can't fathom the adulation for Beach Boys.

    I was born on the tail end of this era in 1973 and should’ve been too young to know anything about it by the time it ended but let me tell you those times were so powerful that they vibrate within me until this day.
    As I grew up, I saw these times fading in the distance like a Mirage and I’ve spent my entire life chasing that Mirage .
    I will say this though I did catch up to it in my 30s( when I became a professional musician myself) and it hugged me like a departing relative, gave me a kiss, and continued on its way.
    Whatever this era was, I am very proud to have been a part of it in any way that I could’ve been. I feel bad for those who don’t know anything about it because this is when most of humanity were angelic and everything that were produced by these angelic’s had soul, meaning and positive emotion.
    Now times are more daemonic

    Michele Phillips was produced well on 'twelve -thirty', and 'dedicated to the one I love', but she is not so well produced on a lot of their other material. Cass Elliot was in a class of her very own, but was the female lead to Denny Doherty. Her solo career was so intense and versatile, It will be recalled & replayed for a long time to come. John Phillips was a great songwriter and was responsible for their amazing unique sound. It was his arrangements that made them as powerful as they were. I would have enjoyed more of 'em. There have been few pop artists with as much universal recognition.

    Michellehillips was that extra model pretty,but Cass Elliot she had workable looks, nowadays they'd grab her dye her hair blond blow it out sleek highlight those blue eyes,fix her teeth and if she didn't trim down naturally,they'd lipo her,for the men I think they were both cute,with the Denny? being cuter,but with stiff drinks they'd both look better to any gal
