Discovering this channel has been a huge motivator for me to get creating; and for the first time after countless starts and stops over the years; I'm making progress.

My first published art was in HERO as a cover art submission. Those books didn't always hold together if you read them a lot, so I have that page from the issue framed somewhere.

I enjoyed this one, and would like to se more Hero Magazine episodes. You mentioned Comics Scene magazine briefly on a previous video, I'd love to see an in depth look at some of those issues as well. Keep up the great work, love your channel.

Hey guys, I was the art director on Hero Illustrated for the first five issues, though I am not responsible for the terrible design on the news pages. Both of those "ashcan" comics were included in the issue. I also conducted the interview with Mike Allred in this issue and I did do the layouts for that article, as well as art directing the Madman ashcan you showed. Mike insisted I be credited in the ashcan which is a reflection of good nature. I love your channel.

You should cover Trencher, if you haven’t already.

14:04 is about Capital City Distribution, not sure who "Mr. Personality" was though, maybe the CEO Milton Griepp? And I only remember that much because I used to run a comics shop with my mom, lol.

I was hoping Ed and Jim would reference that "Poodle's 13-story plunge kills 3!" headline below the piece on the Tick animated series.

The only thing that I enjoy more than listening to Fanboys have a nerdgasm about old comics are professional Fanboys have a nerdgasm about old comics, I could listen to this shit all day!

There is nothing that is as consistently funny to me as when you guys come across some bobo superhero glut publisher ad like the ARComics one in this episode and Jim is like "by the way, I have this." OF COURSE YOU DO.

I gotta admit that was me absorbing the Image look at the time on Xenotech. I also didn't ink those books so maybe the inker helped with driving the Image look home since that was what everyone one was loving at the time. I did 3 issues, perfectly timed with the collapse of the comic industry ;) Only one ish of Stupid Heroes and Bioneers came out.

It's funny, I remember thinking those books looked great when they'd show up in ads in the back of the TMNT books, and I did have those issues of Plastron Cafe that had the previews for a few of them, but then every comic book shop within like a 50 mile radius decided to go tits up (dear God finding a comic shop that stayed open longer than 3 months was difficult in the late 90s) and I never got around to reading those comics.
Oh hey, it'd be really cool if you could do a shoot interview with the Ed and Jim. Hey Ed and Jim, maybe do a shoot interview with Mike Dooney???

Hero Illustrated was part of the same company as Electronic Gaming Monthly at the time, and they musta had crazy money to burn there for awhile.

Around this era the oct-dec issues of egm were 250-300 pages each and half of em were ads. Plus supplements & advertorials. I imagine a lot of that money went to bankrolling Hero.

Yay, you're doing Hero again! I'm looking forward to when you guys get to the big Image interview they do with all the founders, some interesting stuff in there.

Have you guys thought about doing a Poison Elves video? I feel like it would be a perfect subject for you guys to go over.

This is the first of these comic magazines you’ve covered that I actually owned. I’d be hyped to see some further issues go under the microscope.

Speaking of direct to ink art (Trencher), Benjamin Marra's re-animated channel has been uploading some incredible process videos. You can witness him inking, every step clearly shown, and still feel like you've seen some impossible sorcery.

An actual ad for Q-Unit. Wow. That comic has the wildest lettering error I've ever seen, where someone's speech bubble has a shrunken down version of inks from a page of an entirely different comic instead of... words.

dudes I will tellya one thing about Mike Allred. in a world full of over shaded, very dark comics were it hard to see what the hell is going on every page. madman just pops. ist simplicity even in the black and white days. he has always been one of my favorite artists. his run with Dan slot is by far my favorite silver surfer. there is a way that I can look at anything Allred draws and I am able to tell it's his, all the image stuff I actually need to look and find who drew it because they are all so similar.

I actually had this issue of Hero, and when I saw the cover I wondered why I didn't remember any of the interiors. Now that you've shown the interior off, I understand why. What a cluttered friggin mess. Just shovelware comic books clogging everything up. Sad. Seems obvious in retrospect that there'd come a hard, hard crash in comics.

Wertham was correct, too many comics fried the guys brains
they begin talking over each other, surely it wasn't an editing error
it was the awful nature of comics

I personally like Rick Remender comics. Right now he has a new series called Scumbag you can check out, it's on its like 8th issue right now. I haven't gotten to them yet (because I am keep getting side tracked by all the comics that keep getting recommended on this channel haha) but I've like all the other series I've read by him. Who knows, the Kayfabe might do an issue 1 on his run on X-force, but it seems like they checked out in the late 90s marvel wise. The basic premise though is that a world-class jerk has amazing powers, but you know, still "tries" to do right.
