I’m so glad I saw this, you saved me from having a potential panic attack ! I never would have thought the firmware update process would be different from earlier models.
For what it’s worth, I had this problem and simply deleted the update file from the SD card, after which everything appeared to be back to normal. I haven’t reformatted the card, and the shots made after that appear fine. I’ll keep a close eye on it.
I am experiencing the same issue. But the M11-P is not turning on anymore, there only 888 displays on the view finder. The camera is down competently. Do I need to send it to Leica?
Thanks for the heads up. I’m on a waiting list for a M11 Silver Chrome and can’t wait to get my hands on it. I’m also planning to add a Summaron 28mm 5.6 to my stable of lenses. Have you ever done a review of that lens? BTW, I never read manuals, but with technology being what it is it’s probably a good time to start.
Its an excellent lens, very small, very classic, very sharp. I thought I mentioned it in some videos but I will consider to do a full review, thanks for your comment.
Thanks for the info. I assumed its the same proces for the newest firmware 1.4. Does this mean that for all of us who did it the wrong way, do we need to re-intalled the firmware again or simply format the SD card on the CPU ? Thanks for replying :)
No, all good as long as you see in the menu in camera info the newest firmware number and the camera is operating normal. For newer firmwares the bug is fixed anyway. Generally I recommend doing firmware updates via the Leica Fotos app, that's the safest way.
To remove the card after upgrade and format it on a computer is the usual procedure since the Leica M8. Otherwise the camera will be "silent". Only the M240 was different.
Is color rendering of M11 noticeable differs from M10/P for your opinion or not? I like M10 colors much, don’t want to have Sony or Nikon like shift 🤷♂️
That seems to be a new behavior in the M11, as I’m sure I’ve never removed the SD card after updating the M10’s firmware. It seems like a significant inconvenience.
RS pointed out in the comments that you should format the fresh card in the camera afterwards. I did not do it that way and had no issues but RS is generally right, you always should format an SD card after you inserted it freshly into a camera, to get the folders structure right, etc.
I have a new M11 camera, but there is a constant bug. When I return the camera from sleep mode, the red light is on and the screen does not turn on and I can't take pictures, сamera freezes. Only after taking the battery out does it start working. Also the constant problems of Focus peaking. I select it in Info Profile, select the color, but probably it very rarely works. Hope they will fix this problem with a new upgrade.
Good video but ..... ..... you forgot to mention after you placed the IN A COMPUTER FORMATTED card, and started up it camera, you have to FORMAT IT AGAIN IN THE LEICA before shooting.
I was not aware of that, it seems to have worked in my case without the additional formating but thanks for mentioning, will help others. Always appreciate your comments, RS :)
Hey! this just happened to me... it is completely dead and only turns on when I connect it via the cable... the problem is it won't let me connect cause I can't see the screen. How do I fix this? I haven't done anything but shoot the camera once and when I came back to shoot again the camera just did not respond. Any suggestions?
Danke
Had the same issue and this recommendation worked and helped a lot. Thanks. However, I still notice that the screen will freeze or stop working when you go and operate the menu. Anybody who encounters this ? If yes, did you manage to fix this as well ? Appreciate your thoughts / comments. Thanks.
I only had the issue as a one-off, after re-formating the card it all worked as expected, so I do not observe the same issue as you do. Anyone else, pls comment.
My m11 update was stucked in the process after that it is still dead till now. I have followed ur steps but it is still dead for now. I don’t know how to resolve this agaim :(
They warn us in the firmware manual but I was not smart enough to read it :) After my camera broke down I read it ... and brought my camera back to life :)
Many years ago I was walking in the business district of stores, saw a leica in the window of a camera store for a ridiculous low price, went in to Inquire about it,it was a show model with no working parts.
I was (pleasantly) surprised to find that having paired my M11 with the new version of FOTOS the update was painlessly and automatically carried out through WiFi. FOTOS informs you an update is available and does the rest. No SD card removal necessary, just a final restart.
Same here. Although in the Fuji cameras you are warned never to use the app for upgrades, it seems that the Leica app works perfectly well for firmware upgrades.
This doesn’t sound right. ‘Updating’ should be a hassle free process, not a switchback ride into THINKING! I suspect the next developments from Leica will involve building a fully ‘connected’ camera, that can automatically update like an iPhone or a tablet.
Disappointing design feature, I find it ridiculous that one needs to format the card in another device We take this as a quirk, if this happened in a cheap camera it would be considered unacceptable
It’s a new thing with this particular camera. Normally updates are no-fuss straightforward. I suspect Leica is trying to make sure people delete the update file after doing an update, but if so this is an unfriendly way of going about it.
I’m so glad I saw this, you saved me from having a potential panic attack ! I never would have thought the firmware update process would be different from earlier models.
I am glad the video helped :)
Thank you, had the same problem with my q2 mono, freaked me out, found your video. Thanks again.
You are very welcome :)
"When everything else fails, read the instruction book." I keep re-learning this the hard way.
Ha! Same here Frank :)
I'm glad it's not really bricked. That would be terrible.
For a moment I was desperate, really desperate ...

Cool, dass bei Dir dann alles geklappt hat. Best wishes to Berlin :)

Great comment, many thanks for sharing.

Only IDIOTS don’t read user-manuals/instructions.
Beautiful camera.
Another great video and interesting to know.
Thought I share my shock experience and how to overcome it :)
@@mathphotographer your theperson that sorts out the problems

Interesting you say that ... I never did it this way on all of my Leica cameras and never had any issue except with the M11.
Is color rendering of M11 noticeable differs from M10/P for your opinion or not? I like M10 colors much, don’t want to have Sony or Nikon like shift 🤷♂️
Color rendering is great, don't worry. If you get an M11, you will still love your M10 but the M11 colors are as good as on former M cameras.
That seems to be a new behavior in the M11, as I’m sure I’ve never removed the SD card after updating the M10’s firmware.
It seems like a significant inconvenience.
Indeed - and the inconvenience will be fixed in a later firmware update as Leica confirmed to me.
I am one of those dummies. No matter which computer I use to format the sd card, I don't have to format the card in the M11 afterwards?
YES you do with all camera's
RS pointed out in the comments that you should format the fresh card in the camera afterwards. I did not do it that way and had no issues but RS is generally right, you always should format an SD card after you inserted it freshly into a camera, to get the folders structure right, etc.
I did it with the fotos software and it worked like a charm ...no issues whatsoever ,what about recommending this way to update the firmware?
As I mentioned as response to another comment, using the Fotos app is a great alternative I should have mentioned, thx for pointing out.

Thanks for your comment, Olin. Strange - I had no issues so far with my M11, in particular no freezing.
Thank you so much !!!nI will get my M11 soon and I will do all as you said
Enjoy your new camera, you will very quickly be totally in love with your new M11 :)

Just update via the leica-app in your iPhone. That was very easy and no problems at all.
Had the same issue and this recommendation worked and helped a lot. Thanks. However, I still notice that the screen will freeze or stop working when you go and operate the menu.

That's the most user unfriendly device firmware update in recent years
They warn us in the firmware manual but I was not smart enough to read it :) After my camera broke down I read it ... and brought my camera back to life :)
Thank you for the warning…
Excellent video ... thanks for the tip... but you know ... As we say ... juste read the F... Manual ... 🙂
And I never read manuals, shame on me :)
We do things complicated - because we can 🙂 (thanks for the hint)
My Fotos app updated my camera, no firmware on card needed. Simple process that way
Funny little Leica rituals are very amusing...
Yes we Leica shooters have our rituals, and if we don't have our own rituals we accept the rituals indoctrinated by Leica, lol :)

can we say that the firmware engineers get away too much at Leica?
Next firmware will likely address the issue.

This is a cheap camera, for what it is.
Leica software engineering is really lacking…
What a stupid thing from Leica. Never such a issue with my Fuji cameras.
