  • Old machines and some vintage items of interest are discovered in the attic . The E J Abric Co 1918 - 1957? Please pay no attention to my opinions on what I am seeing for the very first time .After researching I found I am way way off .Feel free to offer positive suggestions on what you see .

    I have to admit that you have an amazing ability to find the most interesting places. It's a wonder that this building sat for so long without picker/thieves clearing out all of the items there. Thanks for taking the risks that you do to show us these scenes from the past that may be gone forever in a short time. What a neat place this must have been in its day.
    By the way, those sealed boxes probably contained spare parts for the machinery. I'm still in awe from seeing so much still undisturbed. This place must have had the local post office on the bottom floor and the "Marine Mail" slot was probably for mail destined for overseas as this was obviously a time before "Air Mail" was around or even probably thought of. This was truly one of your best finds. Keep up the great work.

      When I was a kid there where places like this in every . They where always the farm property that the developer spared as most of the time it involved rare Dutch history back in the late 40s . A site like this sometimes comes once in a life time . Thank you for your compliments .Heddle is a part for looms

    • @williamcharles9480
      @williamcharles9480 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Abandoned NorthJersey Thanks for the reply and for the meaning of "Heddle". I was wondering about that. I bet the family of that person's birth certificate would like to have it. It's sad that its condition was so far gone, but considering its age it's amazing that it still exists.

      It was dated 1889 . It looks to be an older mill that was rebuilt and enlarged around 1908 . Abric sounds eastern europe and there was a garment industry in NYC that involved alot of workers who where of jewish ancestry

    • @AbandonedNorthJersey
      @AbandonedNorthJersey  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it would be a really small mill . This place might even be from around 1919 . I just called it a mill because of the heddle making machine upstairs and alot of old cans of dye . It was more then just a supplier per the upstairs machinery .

      The building is surrounded by bulldozers . Time is running out . Those machines are the only ones of their kind possibly . Or atleast one of them is . It seems possible that this is a building built in mid to late 1800s and renovated in the 1910s

    Heddles are used in weaving looms. The French Heddle Co made heddles (what else) and also imported Heddles from a French Company. They were listed as being on 24th Street in Manhattan but maybe they also once had the shop you were exploring. Not much info on the company. My guess is they have been out of business for a very very long time,

    Right where you 1st walked in, & said "Here's an old table" that was a telephone desk. The phone would be the wood crank style, & the directory laid on the desk (along with a notepad & pencil) The can was paint, lead base house paint, & would still be useable I would think (or it would be a rock hard lump). The "mystery box" would have been mounting hardware for those machines. Parts for setting them up. The large box you opened & called "gears" were actually wheels for a Hand Truck.(there was other things too but you picked up a H.T. wheel) A now long closed & tore down factory I worked in had antique Hand Trucks with wheels just like it. Thanks for posting it, & bravery on the rickety stairs.

    • @AbandonedNorthJersey
      @AbandonedNorthJersey  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks . I worked in an old factory that started in 1922 . Almost all the machines where from 1915 thru the 50s . They had those old handtrucks and wagons from the old factory that still stands .That box I opened was smashed to smitherines and the boxes where stolen .The paint cans had labels on them from the 20s or 30s .
      When did you work there ?

    • @AbandonedNorthJersey
      @AbandonedNorthJersey  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I started in aug 90 till 2002 . The company moved to Rhode Island . It is now being leased by DannonYogurt for storage of large spools of plastic and rubber . There was a creepy room with a cold iron bed and a closet full of surgical supplies from 1951 for people who needed first aid .

    • @RetroCaptain
      @RetroCaptain 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Imagine being in dire need of attention, & them having to treat you using that bed & equipment..... doh!

    • @AbandonedNorthJersey
      @AbandonedNorthJersey  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was in that room a few times for a metal splinter but that was all . I would say that the old cold iron bed came from the original factory from 1922 judging by the label .

  • @chrishildreth3996
    @chrishildreth3996 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    My best educated guess, is that "Marine Mail" was mail that was sorted to go overseas by ship.

  • @AbandonedNorthJersey
    @AbandonedNorthJersey  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    WOW ! Thanks for that info .That upstairs is from then most likely . The machines are probably older and may have been used when they built the place probably in 1909 .The wood frame looks more that period . Strange that it was a mill . I guess electricity was not avalilable yet as it only started in the late 1890s . Who knows ?Thanks again .

  • @ericchristian6710
    @ericchristian6710 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those foot pedal machines were used way after electricity was available because they worked. Especially sewing machines. People kept using them till they wore out and we used to make stuff to last here in the good old USA.

    • @AbandonedNorthJersey
      @AbandonedNorthJersey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they where used until circa 1957 , the last year I could find in a box of old receipts that spawned 1934 -1957 all signed with E.J.Abrics`s signature .That area was a different world during those times and was very isolated . I have seen factories like that when I was a truck driver from 98 till 2005 and I saw the tail end of many ways of life that I consider vanishing Americana in places like Paterson Hudson County Essex ,..with very old owners who owned them since back in the day . I miss those days .

  • @srevero1

    I was really surprised you didn't try to open the box..I would be dying of curiosity. However, I think its wonderful that you had respect for private property. This was a amazing explore, absolutely fascinating and so full of history and mystery. I like the way you handle the camera, very thorough and slow enough for us to see what's there. Of course, the update was upsetting and disgusting that people feel free to vandal and steal. Thank you for the explore and look forward to the next one.

    Article said The French Heddle Co. Moved from 592 Manhattan Ave. Brooklyn to 117-119 East 24th street New York.
    They are sole dealers for United States of Devillaines heddles. I am pretty sure that the location in this video has nothing to do with the company "French Heddle" . Back then
    glass was much more expensive than it is today. They warehoused used glass and sold them to other businesses at a discount if there was lettering on the glass that could not be removed. THIS EXPLAINS the one side that was painted over. !! Was that mill part of United States of Devillaines heddles? that's the mystery. I love the internet !!!

Where did ou see a printer . There are 2 machines and both are looms .Was it on the first floor . ? Thanks for your interest . The building might be from around 1910 .

      Both machines where used in textile part manufacture . The wooden one was made shortly before the 1930s using an older machine . . It is sort of handmade . The smaller machine is alittle older then 1930s 20s maybe teensThis building may not be 100 yet .

    really appreciate you coming up with these places to explore but...... you need to pay more attention to what you're looking at. go spend some time in a local library to learn how to visually date items. the certificate you found most likely had a date on it, you need to look at it. Big Thing for your next excursion, carry a backpack with basic tools & another empty pack to take interesting items/finds in... so you can investigate further.

    • @AbandonedNorthJersey

      Yes I learned alot about architecture and framework because of this place . I heard it was demolished last spring .When I first saw it from the road I thought it was a renovated mid 1800s structure .I looked more closer at the frame work and looked on the web at machines from each decade . Seems the machines are from around 1920 .The certificate date was 1922 . The boxes contained heddles made of brass and looked 1920s or 30s as returned to find the boxes opened and some stolen .The small box was business cards for EJ Abric Co from the 30s
