To someone who knows their way around the shop this video may be pointless but to the new do it yourselfers this video is great.
I'm someone that has never used anything more than a ratchet clamp. Finally going to try a large piece and wow are big, pre-made clamps, expensive. I had always heard of these but thanks for showing how simple they are and how to get around the large prices too

Thanks for making this simple video. I was in Home Depot and had no idea if I needed my pipe threaded or not, and you answered the question for me. So whoever said making this video was silly… Was wrong!

Thank you. I have been woodworking for 2 years and only now just getting into pipe clamps and this was a necessary video for me. One thing to note is that you only need to thread one end. This could be lost on some people.

Good intro to pipe clamps. My Dad was into woodworking. He taught me about using clamps. Always clamp against scrap pieces so you don't mare your finished product due to some woods being softer than other types. Saves having to plane the indents out. Also there are the rubber protectors for harbor freight clamps like the other brands. Dad also kept his eye open for pieces of pipe at yard and flee markets to add to his collection. He also had a pipe threader and would thread both ends and use pipe couplers to add the pipes together to make longer ones especially for making doors. I just wanted to share these tips with others starting out.
thanks for this video im throwing together my first big wood working project and found my clamps weren't big enough. pricing out clamps i came across pipe clamps and your video helped tremendously in knowing what i needed to go in and buy
Thanks, I thought I knew how these worked, but was unsure of the threaded pipe to buy. Big help. I see 11 thumbs down, can not begin to understand what that is about. I love when people explain the simple stuff and do not take for granted that we know.
There are at least 102 of us that are thankful that you made this video. I bought the clamps to save some money and there were no instructions included at all. Off to make cutting boards!
You can also use a pipe coupler to lengthen your clamps.
Well done. I’m 57 x military aircraft mechanic and I did not know how they were assembled nor did I know only one of the two piece clamps needed to be threaded in. Gen Pipe Thread I assume. Probably would use a dry lube on the pipe for multiple reasons . Thanks for the video. All of us had to begin our knowledge base from zero. Some people forget to be understanding to that fact.

great tip on buying a single 10 footer and having HD cut and tread it for you, I did not know they would do that. Will definitely do that next time I add some pipe clamps !
Thanks so much for making this video. I literally Googled “How to assemble pipe clamps” because in another video the person used pipe clamps to hold a tabletop she was gluing up, which I’ve never used. I didn’t know about HD cutting and threading the pipes or the price differences. That was great info. You just saved me a ton of money bc I probably would’ve unwittingly bought the expensive pipes out of pure ignorance. Plus, not all HD associates know these cost saving tips or about pipes, in general; they just work there.

Turns out, I was doing it correctly after all... I just had a pipe with an outer diameter that was out of spec... Too big.

I purchase those clamps about 2 years ago, and they are still seating in my workshop waiting for me to buy the pipes 'cause I haven't taken the time to figure out the size of tubing I need. But you answered most of my questions.

Like milk and sugar, eh? Thank for this video, you saved me a lot of headache! Even the manufacturer doesn't bother to include instructions and, sure, I could have spent the afternoon figuring it out on my own. Just what everyone wants to do, right? Spend the whole day playing with a pipe instead of cutting and gluing because it's "obvious" to everyone else how it works.

I subbed, Not because of the "How to" But Because you saved me about $200 in ordering pipes from Home Depot. I got them to cut down the following;
10' = 120"
2 x 36"
2 x 24"
10' = 120"
2 x 48"
2 x 12"
10' = 120"
2 x 60"
All for about $65. THX Please keep this info coming!!!
Damn, my experience was different.
I wanted to buy a 10 footer for $20 and have Home Depot cut it to two 4' and one 2' but they refused. They were gonna charge me $6.87 per foot which would end up being $68.70.
@@TPHoarder Just had this happen to me. The guy was refusing to do it saying "they were not a metal shop!" I told him they were not a woodshop but yet they cut the plywood to size! I then told him to let me talk to his manager because they had done this for me several times before. Long story short he did cut the pipes. Sorry you went thru that but try again.

Yeah honestly this is a great video for those just getting started. I just came across the option and it seems very cost effective, so I wanted to see exactly how they worked. How would you know for sure unless you used it before, or someone nice like Maverick Makers shows you?
Very helpful so yes some of us need videos like this. One question is the thread a standard one regardless of the clamps bought?
Yes for the most part there is a single standard NPT
This is a late comment to this video, but I will add one thing that may help people. Some pipe clamps come with a set of threaded rings that look kind of like the keychain ring that goes on your car keychain. That can be used to screw onto the threads at the far end of the pipe to keep the loose end of the clamp from slipping off the end.
How much of the pipe is threaded? Like an inch maybe? Also, is there a sizing for the threads? If i just ask Home Depot to "thread the ends for pipe clamps", will they automatically know the size of threads to add? Thanks
Yup, just ask them to thread the ends and you should get what you need.
DARN! Wish I would have seen this before. I bought pipe clamps that do not have threads and it keeps falling off the end. any tips for that ?

You know it's been a while, so I don't even remember. I've probably tried a number of things over the years. Simple Green, Brake Clean, Denatured Alcohol, Carburetor Cleaner, Window Cleaner?

@@mick1gallagher The quest for knowledge includes failure and that just because one person may know less than others they should not be afraid to ask rather than pretend they already know. In many cases multiple people may not know, but are too afraid to ask the "stupid question"; the one who asks the question may in fact be doing a service to those around them.
So does it have to be threaded or no?
Any opinion on using black pipe vs galvanised?
I've only used black pipe and if I'm worried about the clamp possibly staining the wood surface I make sure to cover the pipe shaft. Probably really comes down to the price difference between the two.
Wish you could get this good value pipe in the UK.

I just bought 2, ½ inch pipes from Home Depot, I think they’re 6 ft tall. I didn’t know they could cut them for me. I was very confused on how to install them.

Depends on how long you want your clamps.
Does someone know the tread? Is it NPT? Also for the pipe, is it standard SCH40? Thank you.
Schedule 40 with NPT should do the trick
I tried this. But was told by the associate thatthey would charge for cutting and threading at Home depot . I just bought the 30inch ones . Came down to same price if i chose the 10foot cut n thread.

Wish you mentioned that "pony" brand has a coiled wire to be threaded at the opposite end of the pipe as a stop. Fought my clamp for an hour until watched their video too.
How easy is it to remove the pipe to replace it with a shorter/longer one?

Im guessing the a female equal socket ( and both ends of the pipe are threaded) you could join two pipes together 🤔 ..might be too much of a weak point 🤔
I watched this because mine came with extra springs or something and i can’t make sense of it cause they don’t fit the other springs 😬

I strongly suggest not purchasing pipe at a retailer because 3 ft of pipe costs $27. Call a local pipe supplier where pipe costs less than $1.50 per foot. But then you’ll need a pipe threader; recommend Harbor Freight for that. Keep in mind if you want a 3 foot clamp, you’ll have to cut the pipe 6 inches longer at 42 inches.
You forgot to mention that the pipe must be black pipe, not galvanized. I know you said gas pipe but someone may think galvanized is better to prevent rust. DON’T DO IT ! The clutches won’t grip on galvanized pipe and you won’t be able to apply any pressure.

If you cannot assemble a pipe clamp you should not be using one.
Everyone has to learn somewhere. Were you born with all the knowledge you possess? It's exactly because of attitudes like this that some internet forums (reddit electricians for example) get a bad rap.
