    After making this video I tried a flight with a 3S 2200mAh battery, no camera onboard (AUW=634g), and got 70 minutes! This is measured from full charge until the alarm sounds (3.3v under load). The first 1/3 of the flight was slow level cruise at about 40% throttle, the remainder was mostly long slow climbs and glides. Battery cells were at 3.54v a few minutes after landing.

      *8x8 !!!* If the plane is slippery enough, this ought to give you 95mph + AND Clime Rate of 8 inch Prop. I don't know if your 20amp ESC will be enough, but you might want to unwrap it, so it cools better.

    Nice. You're making me homesick for mine that's 1,200 kilometers away and has been for several years thanks to a very bad motorcycle accident that's meant I'm now living in a very different area and haven't been able to do anything.
    I really should have bought 2 of these, I may still do, because when I looked at them I could see that nice thin wing and see it both making a good slippery glider but with some modifications a fairly serious speed machine, I went with turning mine into a speed machine :-).
    I removed their silly canopy since there's nobody in there to need to look out of it and made my own out of carbon fibre and kevlar weave in a gentle curve matching the shape of everything else so it's a bit like a low cockroach looking canopy. Next I got the dremmel into that whole engine pod thing and carved it down and even carved the ply engine mount plate between the screw mount points as far as I was game to get as much clean air flow to the prop and motor as possible, the severely lowered canopy also helped there then ran a quarter inch carbon tube from the very top of the engine plate forward to glue to the carbon wing spar so the motor couldn't flex forward under power. Next I stuck a Turnigy (marked "Durafly") 2836 2,200kv motor on it, a ridiculous 100amp speed controller and even though that motor is only rated up to 3S I stuck a 3,000mah 4S in it spinning a spare AXN 5X5 prop. Surprisingly even though I tried a variety of props including expensive ones of different and even the same size and pitch in so called top brands that AXN one ALWAYS performed best. You should hear that thing scream at full throttle spinning that prop at those insane revs lol. I was bit by bit trying to beat wing flutter. At first I was getting it at around 130 to 140 kph ( I put a tiny GPS logger in it to keep track of what improved and what didn't) and did things like using strips of 3X1mm carbon slitting the foam and pushing it into these slits then running along that with thin CA then smoothing that off, a strip of red wing tape along the leading edge to make that smoother and various strips of fibre reinforced tape etc then test try something and test again. The wing shape isn't ideal for really high speed as you need to add reflex and as it gets faster the foam elevons aelevators or whatever you want to call them would flex under the forces and what happened on the very last run was both servos stripped their cheap plastic gears under the forces involved but, I had previously been getting 185 kph out of it and it was just after I started another speed run when they died and it immediately nose dived. Thankfully I must have been really quick off the throttle as it did hit the ground hard and at great speed but it had leveled out some so surprisingly despite the motor being about 100 feet away and the battery almost as far and way to squashed to keep the model itself WILL fly again, it had fairly minimal damage surprisingly. I'll have to make a new engine mount but apart from that and a bit of steaming to just get a few slight bumps out it survived surprisingly well.
    I want and am pretty certain with pretty much exactly the same setup (stronger servos and maybe an attempt to remove a bit of the curve across the wing from front to back so it's not trying to rotate itself down at high speed and further stiffening up of the elevons I'm pretty sure it'll get there.
    Now I should buy another one and do similar things with the silly lumpy canopy and engine mount but, everything else will be about being as slick as possible, as light as possible with a motor that just enough to climb on a gentle angle with a small and light battery and it should make an excellent little cheap glider.
    FYI. Just an idea that could save you possibly cutting tendons all down the index finger on one hand, I used an easily bought from Hobbyking nylon wing skid mounted under the nose to help protect it on landings, cut and smoothed off that bump they put there and notched out the rear of that skid enough to make a loop on the end of a length of bungee rubber and put a peg in the ground to stretch it back then let it go while holding some elevator and after letting go I'd hit the throttle. Holy crap that thing would accelerate! I even tried flying just slow and steady then pulling the nose up and hitting full throttle at the same time. My mind couldn't seem to make my eyes follow it as it shot up so fast I don't think my mind could accept that it actually was accelerating vertically at so much speed.
    This is an old video so I hope yours is still flying but, things do happen so who knows, at least they are cheap and surprisingly tough as well.
    I bet you never thought anyone could get 185 kph out of one though lol.

    Nice look at this little wing. Built mine about a year ago and built it to go fast which it does very well. 970 grams and no issue with tip stall but you have to watch it. Strongly recommend carbon fiber rods in the nose to prevent smushing it. Using a 4s 3300 battery and a high kv motor mine does 170 kph level. It does this without any type of stabilization and flies really well. I fly FPV and is probably one of the smoothest wings I have. Look close at the airfoil on each wing... they are said to be different.

    I have one too....My Elevons ended up same as yours, and the CG.....It's a great plane, perfect for FPV cruising. A very shallow glide slope, especially when it has no FPV gear in it. Still air to fly in, and a slope to chuck it off, what more could you ask for?
    She did waggle herself just before that tip stall, it was crosswind and very slow. That very undulating landscape is going to be bumpy down low in any kind of wind, regardless of direction...Its very scenic though.

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice few flights..
    had to laugh at some of the antics....
    Hope you really found the IDEAL cg (Level flight with no trim at 1/2 power is often useful)...
    Always good to have more elevon throw than you need (as long as the servos can handle it)., and just use dual or triple rates to reduce the throws for sedate/ precise flying allowing for aerobatic manoeuvres etc....
    Sometimes for Long thin ailerons (elevons) a second servo 1/3 in from the other end improves performance ("small" weight penalty) as it reduces the washout effect that happens with foam control surfaces.
    Lots of room to experiment with on flying wings.
    Above all don't forget that stall only results from one thing, too much aft elevator stick (or applying elevators too quickly - accelerated stall) jk..... good to see you're having fun.

    Very nice review indeed from beginning to end. Ha ha I was hollering "adjust the up trim" LOL as you were playing with the CG. You sold me I have one on order but they are on B/O at the moment. When it just fell out of the sky, I re-played it a dozen times to try and see what happened. Is it just that at slow speed on a steep turn, it loses altitude quickly? Or is it something else? Anyway, I have an old voo-doo by LiteHawk that is about 15 years old and I think i will dig it out and fly it. It actually has some stabilization built in it for its age. Have hardly flown it as I was just starting to get into the hobby back then. Was used to flying gliders with high-starts and no motors. In those days motors were a sin to the hobby LOL Happy Flying.

    Watching your early flights, I was wondering how soon it would demonstrate its sudden stall and spin characteristics. I think my Falcon might be my most frequently crashed plane. Even when you know what it's like, it occasionally catches you out. When I had FPV gear set up on it, I found stalls easier to recover from because I could see it happen and maintain orientation more easily for recovery. A mate (Hadley Boks-Wilson) and I had some good FPV flights together in some fun locations round Wellington back when he had his Falcon, like this: th-cam.com/video/hrRWUKj-hQg/w-d-xo.html

      Possibly, but it does like to tip-stall even without any such encouragement.

    You could scavenge some magnets from an old motor and use them to improve the canopy.

      I know. I've bought plenty. The ones in the kit would have worked better if he had glued it flat onto the fuselage then glued the L shaped steel piece into the slot in the canopy. I saw someone else fit them that way and it worked well.

      Current price shows as USD44.99 (NZD65.17). My point was with 3000 - 4000 views of what looks like a very appealing item at a very appealing price may well have caused a mini-rush on sales. Banggood should be very pleased with you... maybe some goodies in the mail wouldn't go amiss! ;o)

    Yeah, mind that stall. The Falcon will drop a wing when over 650 grams, and very violent at that. Unless you're high enough, it'll death dive .. Great model though, I have had few of them through the years. Most of them for fpv.

    Is the motor brake using some voltage from the ESC to keep the propeller in a fixed position?

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it would be using a tiny bit. But I suppose the benefit from keeping the prop fixed is more than the glide slope would be affected by having it spinning... I think.

      Wingspan is 1.4m I believe. Looks like they don't have any now, but I have noticed they appear again from time to time. I would recommend the C1 Chaser though, much more stable, durable, and more room to carry stuff.

    Nice plane ! How do you make it so quiet ?

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The SunnySky motors are quite nice, very smooth running with little vibration which helps. This power setup (3S 1100kv) is a little too slow, usually I would use a 2200kv motor so that full throttle is about twice as fast (and higher pitched noise). I guess you could get the same effect from a 2200kv motor if you just kept the throttle low.

    I've had one of these for a few years - a couple of tips, the elevons will flutter at speed, I replaced mine with balsa and even with 15mm magnets replacing the tiny ones that come with it your canopy will come off - I did this to mine and it's been fine since i.imgur.com/R9hd8L8.jpg. I have mine on an Emax 2212 1400kv on 3S 2200 with an 8x6. BTW I launch mine by grabbing it at the join of the wing and throwing it overhead as I do for all my larger wings

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just asking a question and was hoping some one could help me.
    I want to build a rover that uses its Owen satellites ones that you can place around an area rather than using space ones
    i was hoping that some one could point me in the right direction a channel or website wear some one is doing this.
    sorry for asking such noobish questions.

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to triangulate using the distance from the rover to each 'satellite' you'll need some way to measure the distance between two points. The only thing that comes to mind is UWB radio systems but don't expect it to be cheap. Try googling for "uwb positioning"

    Great vid, I have four of these, my first (retired) was the 3rd plane I ever flew RC, and it's great to see different versions of this Fantastic wing!, BUT the falcon does not like slow! not unless your flying in a straight line! and cg needs 295-300mm
    with the canopy (my first went through the prop confetti came out) use fibre tape to tape the nose down and just lift it up and down from the rear like a hinge, you don't need to take the tape off and when airborne the passing air holds the rear down, if your interested here's a vid of mine with the falcon, different flying style? th-cam.com/video/hcRePx1-vd8/w-d-xo.html I've never slope soared so I'm curious about the falcon just as a soarer, (I still have a falcon in the box spare) great vid thanks for sharing :-)

    23:20 - and that is why I refuse to fly flying wings now. They stall and there is nothing you can do but watch.

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the problem is this wing has no washout/twist, so the whole wing stalls at the same time. I also have the Wingwing z84, C1 chaser, and FX79 Buffalo and they all have washout and do not stall like this, which is why I was so surprised at 23:20 because it had never happened to me before. I have thermalled the C1 and FX79 with motor off and almost full up elevator for many minutes at a time without stalling. Seems like it's a trade-off with efficiency, the flat wing of the Skywalker falcon is what makes it so efficient, but you really gotta keep it moving at a decent speed and angle of attack.
