  • Dan Morgenstern remembers early listening encounters with Artie Shaw's music in Copenhagen -- his "seductive" playing in comparison with Benny Goodman -- and then in person in America. Recorded on June 8, 2018, by Michael Steinman for JAZZ LIVES (www.jazzlives.w...).

I like Artie a lot, but only when he plays swing. I can sense with some of his pieces he likes classical but I could never get into those songs like Frenesi

Gee, I thought FRENESI was a hell of a swinging record, myself.

@@swingyoucats I mean it’s not bad by any means. I just could never get into those songs of his. I like something that can get you up and dancing. I’m much more partial to Nonstop Flight and Serenade to a Savage. It’s also why I’d consider myself more of a Benny Goodman fan. But I respect your take too

@@bennygoodmanisgod Glenn Miller produced some great swing too. I never really could get into Frenesi either.

Frenesi to me was a classical music piece as in classical music, only better than most of that stuff, much of which is vastly over rated. What he doesn't say in this short clip and what he probably knew, was that Artie, unlike Goodman, Miller and Dorsey etc. was that he also composed solely or with other people many tunes and songs. Only Ellington was another composer. As one of the other leaders, possibly Dorsey or Goodman said, "we just edited".
