I'm not a birder but love your style, honest and transparent info. You don't gloss over things and talk nonsense. A gem in the sea of youtube.
Thank you :)
I cannot wait for your comparison with the Canon R6 mkII and Z6 III.
Come on Jan, as if you didn't have the R1 and R5-2 already.
Blink once if you like them and blink twice if you don't. 😂
I wish I did, but I don’t. Otherwise I wouldn’t be able to talk about them like this either.
😂
I pre-ordered the Z6III the first day. I will use it for a second body for aviation photography.
Z6iii ordered to replace my Z6ii.
Ordered the Z6III and should be arriving before Friday. As an Z6II owner, very keen to get my hands on the Z6III. Planning on keeping my Z6II as a second body for video and wide angle shots using the Z 24-70mm lens. I photograph mostly birds but also mammals.
Awesome video Jan! Thanks heaps
Nice update Jan. Honesty goes along way and engineers like to hear this stuff so improvements can be made (coming from a retired engineer) 😁
Thanks Jan for the updates and your insights!
My pleasure!
Thanks, Jan!
Great update Jan! What I look for in a camera is how good the AF is. Frames per second, and video are least of my concerns.
My Z9 should get its baby sister in a couple of days!😎. 👍🏾🙏🏾🏴🇸🇪🇹🇹
Thank you, Jan. You are the only person I trust to give an unbiased review of any of the products you get to test. It's always good to see you point out the good and the not so good and I for one really appreciate that. 😊
Thank you so much!
I value that you always tell it like it is. Tx Jan
Hi
I have a question please
I shot a 4K video but switched to dynamic shooting
I am used to transferring photos and videos through the Canon app
But this dynamic shooting I could not download it to my phone
Is there a way to download a dynamic video shot in HDR format
Please help
If Nikon continues its practice of releasing substantive firmware updates that truly enhance camera capabilities, as it has for the for the Nikon Z8 and Z9, then the Nikon Z6 III is not only a great camera now but will continue to be a highly capable camera for years to come. Adding bird subject/eye recognition to the autofocus system, as they did with the Z8 and Z9, could easily be done in a firmware update.
👍.. What speed can you transfer images to your computer?
I completely agree, on purchasing the fastest available cards. I rarely shot above 10 fps, but I do have days with hundreds of photos. I think I have the will power to pop the card in and walk away, but I don’t.
For me, ordering the Z6 III would mean committing to the Z system. I currently use a D750. I pretty much only do travel photography, where I might not know beforehand what the situation will be like. I use 3 zooms: 18-35, 24-120 and Tamron 100-400. That last one replaced my 70-300 for a bit of extra reach, for wildlife.
The zoom triplet "strategy" is what I carried over from when I shot APS-C (D7100). I had the 12-24/4, 17-55/2.8 and 70-200/4. The 17-55 being a compromise between low light capability and filling a hole in the zoom range. I knew I wanted an ultra wide as well, so the 12-24 fulfilled that role. And then to complete the range I'd have the 70-200. My idea was also that having fewer lenses in total (so not an added "travel lens" for example) would be an advantage in that I'd know my lenses better. But sometimes I’m wondering if it’s not overkill, and if maybe I’d be making my own life easier with a superzoom lens, or a smaller sensor camera such as MFT. I know it’s not going to be the same quality though.
If I would commit to Nikon Z and the zoom triplet strategy, the 100-400 is an obvious lens for me. But it’s heavier than my current 100-400. The 14-30 is also heavier than my 18-35. The Z6 III (if I’d get that) and 24-120 are lighter, but all in all I’d end up with a system that weighs about the same. At the same time, 24MP at 400mm isn’t ideal for wildlife either. One thing I could do is get a D850 for more megapixels (croppability), but that's adding more weight. Another option is to add a Nikon 1 camera with an adapter. And actually, get the 10-30 lens for it to replace my RX100 V as well. Maybe I could even add an ultra wide Nikon 1 lens, and use my D750 with the 100-400, and Nikon 1 with those lenses. At least on some trips. The advantage being that you can easily switch between those two bodies.
But the Nikon 1 only adapts to F-mount lenses, not to Z, because of the flange distance. And also, my RX100 is better in low light.
I feel I'm overthinking this.
My Z6iii arrives today here in Sydney. Will
Be interesting comparing it with my Z8 and Z9.
I just got a Tenba backpack, very happy with it.
Hi Mr Jan, what’s your main camera you use day to day work and what camera company do you recommend pls.
Thanks
I currently use 2x R5 and 1x R3 daily pretty much. I have also been using a lot of Z8 and Z9.
Great video mate.
Thanks 👍
2:38 What are these yellow dots next to the menu items? Updates of some sort? Haven't seen them before.
Thanks for another informative vid Jan! 👏🏻
Great info Jan as always, thank you for that.
I’m using Adobe and I’m disappointed that they just so naturally seek access to our data, as if customer privacy is so much of a nonissue that it is non existent to them.
The Z6III has also bird AF, grouped together with dog, cat, etc. AF in the animal section. And in the vehicle section are cars, bicycles, motorcycles, planes, etc. grouped.
Yes like the z8 and z9 used to have, but then they introduced specific bird AF, which made a difference
@@jan_wegener maybe a firmware update on that in future?
Looking forward to your assessment of the R5 ii and whether present R5 owners will find it worth the expense to upgrade to ii for wildlife photography
I just got an email from B&H stating my ordered Z6III has shipped and will be arriving on Thursday. Though it may not be the unicorn camera, I believe that it will be a great compliment to my Z9 and I'm looking forward to getting familiarized with it.
Hope you enjoy it!
“Basically Unlimited buffer” wow those are big words! Fingers crossed the industry leans more into this capability.
This is one of the biggest roadblocks I see with my R6IIs; not only does it fill quickly (with limited FPS options), but the camera is unusable until buffer clears - Nikons historically let you take a few shots at least, while it’s completing the write to card. Im all ears of course if you or anyone else has any tips on this 👌
Feel like I say this every time I comment, but I seriously appreciate your content & format here. There’s not many channels I consistently look forward to new content from, and just want to say thanks again for the work & info you pass on to a very grateful group of subscribers 🙏 very few channels deliver objective, detailed, and relevant info, and it’s highly commendable see you do this consistently. You are appreciated!
Z6III Australian price is all over the place . EG digi direct advertising today at a crazy price $4500aud nobody would pay, is now listed as $3800 "discounted " on their web site the camera is not even available yet . Its still too expensive at $3800.00 to close to the Z8 price is being discounted now, which is a much superior camera that has no rolling shutter fast stacked sensor and much more MP to play with .Unless you need video with better follow focus just get the Z6II at $2400AUD now its on sale everywhere it has the same image MP quality as the Z6III. You only buy the Z6III if NIKON bean counters make the price more realistic for the Australian market place , this will probably take 6-12 months time when they realise nobody will pay the high prices they started with and also eventually realising everybody is struggling financially .
It's so messed up. You can get an R5 or an A7R V for less than the msrp of the Z6iii. Good to see digidirect has seen some sense and lowered it, but who knows how long you'll have to wait with those guys 😅
Jan this new Z6 III that would be a great combination with the 150 to 600 is a carry around lens .
Access to Z glass (and F glass) overcomes whatever plusses and minuses may exist between the Z6III and R6II, especially for wildlife/sports action which is how a lot of these bodies are judged. Nikon has built a virtually insurmountable lead in 300mm+ glass, and there is just no side stepping that fact. Also, finally someone acknowledges Canon's far inferior buffer implementation. The Z8/Z9 in single card write LC RAW FF has an unlimited buffer at 15fps. Start shooting, stop shooting, quickly start shooting again...doesn't matter. The A1 in single card write does about 5fps unlimited. With Canon once you release the shutter button you have to wait until the on board memory buffer clears to resume shooting again. In heavy action sequences that are spaced close together this will cause you to miss a ton of shots. If you are a sports action/wildlife shooter, this is a large red X against Canon.
It's not a Large RED X against Canon mostly because of the current R5 pricing, pending release of the R5ii, and only CANON has the affordable, 200 800mm lens. Most folks miss shots because they can NEVER get close enough to their subjects.
Nikon has the best long telephoto lineup IMO, the F mount options are still excellent from the inexpensive Sigma and Tamron 150-600’s to the latest Z 180-600 and a lot of more expensive but excellent prime options. The built in TC’s on the premium lenses are a big advantage. Nikon’s buffer size is amazing on the Z9/8 and Z6iii. Using high efficiency RAWs you basically have an unlimited buffer at 20FPS RAW with the right cards.
@@natureredux1957 The price of the camera increasing or decreasing does not increase or decrease the performance characteristics. Even if the R5 was $1500 it would still have a far inferior buffer implementation vs the Z8/Z9 and A1, and you will miss a ton of shots because of it regardless of what lens you are using in wildlife/sports action situations. It is what it is, and Canon should get their head out of their butt and ask Nikon how to do it right.
If you have the RF 200-800 and it works for you, then that is awesome. I actually saw one (I think) this past weekend for the first time "in the wild" down at the beach for shorebird nesting season. I didn't get to talk to the lady that was using it, but she was pretty active with it for over an hour with no tripod/monopod as far as I could tell.
@@kalimarus You can get most of the F glass pretty cheap in 9/10 or even sometimes 10/10 condition. All the FL and PF glass are still perfectly viable options in 2024. Even some of the G glass, such as the 300 f2.8G VRII, is a viable option, as is the F 200-500 f5.6E. That's 9-10 great/exceptional F lenses plus the Z glass. Z 100-400, Z 180-600, Z 400 f4.5, Z 600 PF, Z 800 PF, and the pro 400/600 TC lenses. Perhaps the most underrated of the Z super tele lineup is the 800 PF. That lens is crazy good for the price.
Herr Wegener, my CFExpress card reader gets hot and fries my CFExpress card. Which reader do you use? Thanks.
They can all get hot depending on the card sometimes. I use prograde readers
Thank you kindly. I‘ll get one. Mine gets hot to the stage that it self-ejects.
Your vid shows it seems to focus on the eyes of birds anyways ....but we seem to have animal and bird af in one ...would that make a correct statement?? For the Z6iii
For now it seems like yes, it was like that with z9 for 2 years but nobody can confirm if they will implement bird AF into z6iii
Hallo Jan.
Gruß aus Cottbus.
Jörg
Klingt so also ob du die Z8 beschreibst am Anfang 😉
@@jan_wegener Wenn die Z8 leichter und günstiger wäre, ja. 😉
Bei der Z6III hätte ich auf eine Auflösung um die 30MP gehofft.
is the r5 ii the same body design as the r5 ?
I expect it to be similar, but with a few changes
Hi Jan, thanks for the updates !
When we see the Z6iii getting CFxB, I strongly hope the R5ii will get 2 of those .. any word on this from your hands-on friends ?? My CFxB is clearly slower than your new Gen4 cards, yet it's blazing fast compared to the SD cards ..
Is your new Nya-evo really 40 liters and not 36 ? The 36 doesn't seem expandable to 50, so I guess it's so new it isn't yet on their website 😛
I have been checking out these backpacks some weeks ago, and based upon dimensions I feared the RCI-L would be just too small for the R5 & 200-800 & 100-500 & 24-105 & 14-35, so I feared I'd had to go for the Fjord 60 & RCI-XL .. but then (on the EU website) both the RCI-L & RCI-XL are sold out. After some doubting, I ended up getting a LowePro Whistler 450.
Yes the 40L was only on Kickstarter for now, but I’m sure it’ll be added soon.
R5 II will be SD and CFx
@@jan_wegener Aha, I wasn't aware of the kickstarter part ..
On my R6 I used to write jpg as backup to the second card. On the R5 I stopped doing that because only when opting the lowest resolution jpg, my V30 SD card wasn't causing buffering issues. My single CFxB never ever acted up during 200k images, and when shooting cRaw only (and doing some feathering) I hardly ever fill the buffer.
So I only keep the SD in the camera for the case when I'd need to shoot beyond 0.5TB in a single day.
But when I take out the CFxB before taking out the battery, then the R5 switches to the SD for both stills and video which is soooo annoying. The R5ii promises to be awesome, but I'm not aware of any valid reason to defend keeping an SD card 😞 And given the R1 seems destined to eat the R3 alive (like your kingfisher swallowed the crab), the fact the R3 has an SD card is no valid reason to handicap the R5ii the same way ..
that new bag does not seem to be available on their web site
Not yet, it was a Kickstarter campaign but should be coming soon
@@jan_wegener thanks for the answer
Is it likely that Nikon will give the Z6iii an update that will include the bird specific autofocus as it has the same processor Expeed 7 as the Z8 and Z9 but with less megapixels it should definitely have the hardware capabilities?
It may, but I think these processors are like intel ones. Like there’s many dozens of i9 for instance. So the expeed 7 In z6 iii may not be as powerful as the z8 and z9 ones, but I don’t know
Gibt es Vermutungen, wie teuer die R5 II werden wird?
Even if Adobe are not currently spying on us, they definitely are trying to give themselves permission to do so.
That seems clear and many others are going this way too
hi Jan,
with its 24 mpx sensor the r1 is such a let down that TH-cam rumors accounts are struggling to keep the hype....
fortunately for them ( and us) the r5 mk2 shouldn't disappoint but can it really wow the audience ???
regarding Adobe, now that you have to buy credits to run the generative functions, wouldn't that be fair of them to give credits to customers when their material is used to train their Ai models ???
capture one has ( in my case ) completely replaced Lightroom but I still use photoshop ... if there was an alternative, I would switch.
The R1 is such a Niche camera that folks trying to talk it down really won't matter.
I don't get why they would make it 24mp and not call it the R3 mkii
@@natureredux1957 yeah so very niche. Lol it’s the R3mk 2…
Jan, Nikon said they combined animal and bird into one mode.
That what it used to be, but then they separated it out in the z8 and z9 and it made a big difference
The CFExpress card you showed from B&H may have a read speed of 3400MB/s but only a sustained write speed of 850MB/s - that's actually quite slow for CFExpress.
EDIT: I stand corrected! The max write speed is infact 3000MB/s! 😮
Rest of comment deleted…. 😚
I think you’re right that at this price point some of these cards won’t be able to have the top of the line speed as long as the higher end cards
Jan you heard the rumours about R6III or possibly different named camera getting the R3 sensor? That would be a game changer for sure. No reason why the 24MP cameras can't have the good stuff like the 45MP ones. Would also love to see a massively updated R7 II with basically R6II body, same button layout, Z6III type EVF, CF-E Type B + SD II slots, 30fps, big buffer, stacked sensor or at least one with < 1/100s scan speed, 26-28MP, 6K60p. Current R7 is a massive let down and not worthy of the name R7. It's the true R10. I would gladly pay $2500US for R7 II with said specs.
Yes I would be a little disappointed also with R1 24 megapixels for wild life photography but sports shooters might love the higher iso performance along the the supposed canon RF 200-500mm f4 which I would assume would weigh about 7ibs and would greatly help putting those 24 megapixels at your desired composition without much cropping vs a prime lens. This why we will have the R5 Mark Ii which would be a better choice for prime lens in my humble opinion. 😊
Having the Z9 out there (speed and resolution), I am asking myself how EOS-R1 might be a worthy competitor with 24mpix only...
The only answer I have atm is that it’s not meant to be that
@@jan_wegenerhoping an R1s is released to compete. Or they change the R3 to higher MP. Either way I don’t know what Canons strategy is here.
@@zeiss1382 I think the strategy is to have as many 24MP sensor as humanly possible
I’m a huge fan of the Nya-Evo bags. I have both the original Fiord 60C and the new 50C. Someone DM me if they are interested in buying my Shimoda and F-Stop bags!
I'm waiting Canon R6 Mark III
Re: Z6iii. I feel that camera manufacturers need to embrace fair and honest reviews of their products, as you have done, Jan.
Honest reviews temper user expectations and can lead to happier customers since they have gone into a purchase after weighing the pros and cons of the product against their use case. IMO this is far better than users who feel cheated and lied to by manufacturers and reviewers when they are surprised by hidden shortcomings of the product.
No product is perfect so it's important that prospective customers are aware of the pros and cons before they fork out a lot of hard earned cash.
well said, thanks :)
Little beet upskiled autofocus (nikon z6 mark iii ) but not tha same sony&canon ......this is my openion
I have a strong feeling that Nikon will add the bird AF in a firmware update.
I hope so and that is a real possibility.
All eyes will be on the Canon R5ii and whether or not it's a properly STACKED 45MP sensor as opposed to the NIKON, 24MP partially stacked sensor. The R1 is such a Niche type camera that being 24MP really won't matter for most types buying it.
Though Nikon’s counterpart to the R5 is the Z8 which has a fully stacked sensor
Dont know why they left out the Bird AI. Look at Fuji they include all their AI detection modes across their range and it does not appear to hurt their sales as their bofies all offer a different experience.
I’d go with the Canon R8 over the Z6iii to be honest. Cost more than half the price better autofocus 40fps raw electronic mode Canon Color science can’t be beat.
I have the R8 and love it, can’t understand how anyone can be disappointed in it, with the amazing RF lenses, not having IBIS is not a problem at all..
Thoughts on Adobe. I know Adobe might do all sorts of things. But probably keep my head in the sand and using LR & PS because, I think, as you might have said, they're tools we need to use. Not a lot I can do about it.
There is no need to keep your head in the sand. They did nothing out of the ordinary and the only rights they spelled out are necessary to even have a cloud service. Jan is unfortunately no lawyer and doesn't understand what the clarifications by Adobe spelled out: No AI training from your cloud images, not before and not now!
Why don't you just get replacement feet/collars for your lenses, instead of adding bulk with extra plates? (Except for the 200-800, of course)
As you say it depends on the lens. For the 100-500 I should, but I also often have a bunch of lenses here to test, so I can’t order a new foot each time
I hear talk of z6iii firmware hope lists. Shouldn't the new camera have your hope list? In the past there was always talk of update only for them not to materialise, ending in disappointment
Yes, hopefully there may be a technical reason to not have certain features and it may become available later after an update instead of holding things back
Jan did you say 15-20,000 photos in a couple of days .... good grief man! I have a hard time culling just a couple of thousand.
Yes, after a while you get used to it. It doesn’t always happen, but especially when I review cameras I often take more images to get a better understanding of the camera in a shorter period of time
The ibis even on Z8 is very wobbly in the corners at wider angle below 35 mm.
Is that more or less wobbly than the Canon IBIS? I found the IBIS on my R5 extremely wobbly on wideangle lenses like the 16mm
@@KoenKooi
I haven’t tried Canon. My lense is only down to 24mm. I have only noticed it in video mode. I don’t think it’s a lot but it’s still annoying when you come home and see the result. The solution is to have a good lense with optical stabilizer.
I'm on the fence about the Z6iii because of the sensor size. I currently shoot the D500 which has a 21 mp dx sensor. It seems like moving to a 24 mp fx sensor would result in lower pixel density and a loss of resolution. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that Jan.
The only advantage you can gain by having a smaller sensor size is speed. But the Z6iii sensor is partially stacked so the Z6iii will be better in every regard when it comes to sensor size. You'll have more resolution and larger pixels which means better low=light performance. You'll also have higher dynamic range. If your concern is only sensor size, the Z6iii is the clear and obvious choice.
@@nickcarneyphotography That is just plain wrong (and that is coming from someone that shoots full frame exclusively atm). Jack is right about pixel density. I would ask myself if I had the opportunity to get closer to my subjects. If you find yourself as close as you can get atm "upgrading" from D500 to Z6 will reduce image quality for the same framing because you have to crop to dx. If you can get closer (maybe you don't have to be that close because you shoot bigger mammals) full frame will have an advantage. The autofocus will be a big step up either way.
Another way of thinking about this is this: image quality will be higher with the Z6 if you can get close enough. It will be worse if you have to crop to DX. That could result in the following: your overall keeper rate goes down because you are too far away most of the time. However, the very best pictures you take will be even better quality, because you managed to get very close to take advantage of the full frame sensor (and therefore better background separa tion etc). Short version: *fewer keepers but higher quality ceiling*. That might be a fair trade-off, if you go for a quality over quantity approach.
Unfortunately Nikon will not put top features into a lower end price camera ….for best bird tracking z8 and z9 will always be on top. That’s why I’m going to Canon…great tracking at many price levels.
I can't wait for the R52! I hope we have new toys for our trip!!
I feel like the reviews was sugar coded I feel like there was room for more honesty.
Like what for instance?
Z63/ZF Ibis is not good for walking vlog style. For photos is great for wide and tele.
I’m so close to swapping to Canon if Nikon’s autofocus lets me down again…
I'm a Canon user. I envy Nikon for the fun/joy of using the cameras, but the auto focus on my Canon R6 Mark II makes me say 'DAYYUUUM!' all day and every day.
For me, the R6 II would be the easy choice if they were available at a reasonable price used. Unfortunately, for reasons that escape me, they cost exactly the same used as a new one, which makes absolutely no sense. Obviously, you'd have to have a malfunctioning brain to spend $1900 used for a camera that sells for $1900 new, but thats how they're priced. As a result, I'd be tempted to stick with Nikon and use an FTZ adapter with my F-mount lenses so I didn't have to buy lenses on day one.
I think the prices haven’t adjusted yet since the new ones have dropped a lot in price
isn't bird detection now merged with animal detection?
It was the other way around. It used to be just animal, then they took out birds. In this camera it’s combined again, but just birds has performed much better for me than the mixed mode
Only downside the 24 mega pixels
Hmmm... Colors are a bit different today. As if you used different lighting.
I think I edited it a bit different. I thought I may look a tad pale
Of course Adobe wants to use our data AND charge us crazy prices at the same time. What a wonderful "product"
Your comment about tests values Damien Bernal's videos. He tested the Z6iii with human (very good), dog (bad subject acquisition, then good) and birds (not good).
Yes I did a bunch of tests with my daughter and it worked great for humans, even in very low light
Why would anyone get R1 over Z 6iii at this pont beggers belief if 24mox is true. Z6 iii af is good enough, price will be considerably lower, same inage quality probably, no issues with buffer, and video is limited to mqximum 24mpx sensor can handle... I xant see R1 being a wild sucess as much as Canon thought, Nikon jist took the wind out of theor sail (lol, or "sale" if you will)
I am looking at getting out of Adobe products.
Jan, sorry but I use and like Affinity. With what Adobe bookkeepers and lawyers are pulling off lately is unacceptable.
Can't believe it they put an unusable "influencer" flip screen on it. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 That screen design is the worst design accident ever. Shooting by screen is impossible because it's out of lens axis and it is prone to break 🙈🙈🙈. I was about to purchase 2 of them, now it's ZERO. Greetings to Nikon.
It seems very clear that you don't understand the terms and conditions Adobe has put forward. It's just legalese for "if you want us to provide you with a web presence (which is included in the subscription) then you need to give us the appropriate rights to do so with your images." The clarification was clear and precise in this regard and also in spelling out that what you accused them of doing was not happening in the past and will not happen (training AI from your cloud images).
I understand it fully thank you.
Fully agree with Karl above. MattK has a very clear TH-cam on this issue showing that the Adobe “issue” is clickbait.
As a Nikon shooter (Z9, ZF) , I can't help thinking that Nikon is kinda stuck a generation behind in terms of AF.
Cannon will soon launch the R1 and R5 II , both of which will have a top tier AF I am sure , and current R3 already has better AF than the Z9 or Z8 .
Us Nikon shooter will have to wait another 2 years + for substantial AF improvement ,with the Z9 MK II and Z8 Mk II.. bummer.
The Z6 III seems great though, and at least on that area Nikon are ok for now (until the A7 V of course)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
@@jan_wegener And yours?
@@LOLA6ifyableI agree that Canon should make a big leap forward with the next gen of cameras, hopefully at least
Z6m3 is over priced
Thanks for the kind words, glad you’re enjoy the content. Steve perry tried harder with the buffer than I did and he stopped after 2 minutes of straight shooting 😂 I gave up after like 400 shots already
Not once could we hit it
