    If Nikon continues its practice of releasing substantive firmware updates that truly enhance camera capabilities, as it has for the for the Nikon Z8 and Z9, then the Nikon Z6 III is not only a great camera now but will continue to be a highly capable camera for years to come. Adding bird subject/eye recognition to the autofocus system, as they did with the Z8 and Z9, could easily be done in a firmware update.

    For me, ordering the Z6 III would mean committing to the Z system. I currently use a D750. I pretty much only do travel photography, where I might not know beforehand what the situation will be like. I use 3 zooms: 18-35, 24-120 and Tamron 100-400. That last one replaced my 70-300 for a bit of extra reach, for wildlife.
    The zoom triplet "strategy" is what I carried over from when I shot APS-C (D7100). I had the 12-24/4, 17-55/2.8 and 70-200/4. The 17-55 being a compromise between low light capability and filling a hole in the zoom range. I knew I wanted an ultra wide as well, so the 12-24 fulfilled that role. And then to complete the range I'd have the 70-200. My idea was also that having fewer lenses in total (so not an added "travel lens" for example) would be an advantage in that I'd know my lenses better. But sometimes I’m wondering if it’s not overkill, and if maybe I’d be making my own life easier with a superzoom lens, or a smaller sensor camera such as MFT. I know it’s not going to be the same quality though.
    If I would commit to Nikon Z and the zoom triplet strategy, the 100-400 is an obvious lens for me. But it’s heavier than my current 100-400. The 14-30 is also heavier than my 18-35. The Z6 III (if I’d get that) and 24-120 are lighter, but all in all I’d end up with a system that weighs about the same. At the same time, 24MP at 400mm isn’t ideal for wildlife either. One thing I could do is get a D850 for more megapixels (croppability), but that's adding more weight. Another option is to add a Nikon 1 camera with an adapter. And actually, get the 10-30 lens for it to replace my RX100 V as well. Maybe I could even add an ultra wide Nikon 1 lens, and use my D750 with the 100-400, and Nikon 1 with those lenses. At least on some trips. The advantage being that you can easily switch between those two bodies.
    But the Nikon 1 only adapts to F-mount lenses, not to Z, because of the flange distance. And also, my RX100 is better in low light.
    I feel I'm overthinking this.

    “Basically Unlimited buffer” wow those are big words! Fingers crossed the industry leans more into this capability.
    This is one of the biggest roadblocks I see with my R6IIs; not only does it fill quickly (with limited FPS options), but the camera is unusable until buffer clears - Nikons historically let you take a few shots at least, while it’s completing the write to card. Im all ears of course if you or anyone else has any tips on this 👌
    Feel like I say this every time I comment, but I seriously appreciate your content & format here. There’s not many channels I consistently look forward to new content from, and just want to say thanks again for the work & info you pass on to a very grateful group of subscribers 🙏 very few channels deliver objective, detailed, and relevant info, and it’s highly commendable see you do this consistently. You are appreciated!

    Z6III Australian price is all over the place . EG digi direct advertising today at a crazy price $4500aud nobody would pay, is now listed as $3800 "discounted " on their web site the camera is not even available yet . Its still too expensive at $3800.00 to close to the Z8 price is being discounted now, which is a much superior camera that has no rolling shutter fast stacked sensor and much more MP to play with .Unless you need video with better follow focus just get the Z6II at $2400AUD now its on sale everywhere it has the same image MP quality as the Z6III. You only buy the Z6III if NIKON bean counters make the price more realistic for the Australian market place , this will probably take 6-12 months time when they realise nobody will pay the high prices they started with and also eventually realising everybody is struggling financially .

    Access to Z glass (and F glass) overcomes whatever plusses and minuses may exist between the Z6III and R6II, especially for wildlife/sports action which is how a lot of these bodies are judged. Nikon has built a virtually insurmountable lead in 300mm+ glass, and there is just no side stepping that fact. Also, finally someone acknowledges Canon's far inferior buffer implementation. The Z8/Z9 in single card write LC RAW FF has an unlimited buffer at 15fps. Start shooting, stop shooting, quickly start shooting again...doesn't matter. The A1 in single card write does about 5fps unlimited. With Canon once you release the shutter button you have to wait until the on board memory buffer clears to resume shooting again. In heavy action sequences that are spaced close together this will cause you to miss a ton of shots. If you are a sports action/wildlife shooter, this is a large red X against Canon.

    • @natureredux1957
      @natureredux1957 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      It's not a Large RED X against Canon mostly because of the current R5 pricing, pending release of the R5ii, and only CANON has the affordable, 200 800mm lens. Most folks miss shots because they can NEVER get close enough to their subjects.

    • @kalimarus
      @kalimarus 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Nikon has the best long telephoto lineup IMO, the F mount options are still excellent from the inexpensive Sigma and Tamron 150-600’s to the latest Z 180-600 and a lot of more expensive but excellent prime options. The built in TC’s on the premium lenses are a big advantage. Nikon’s buffer size is amazing on the Z9/8 and Z6iii. Using high efficiency RAWs you basically have an unlimited buffer at 20FPS RAW with the right cards.

    • @KungPowEnterFist
      @KungPowEnterFist 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@natureredux1957 The price of the camera increasing or decreasing does not increase or decrease the performance characteristics. Even if the R5 was $1500 it would still have a far inferior buffer implementation vs the Z8/Z9 and A1, and you will miss a ton of shots because of it regardless of what lens you are using in wildlife/sports action situations. It is what it is, and Canon should get their head out of their butt and ask Nikon how to do it right.
      If you have the RF 200-800 and it works for you, then that is awesome. I actually saw one (I think) this past weekend for the first time "in the wild" down at the beach for shorebird nesting season. I didn't get to talk to the lady that was using it, but she was pretty active with it for over an hour with no tripod/monopod as far as I could tell.

    • @KungPowEnterFist
      @KungPowEnterFist 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @@kalimarus You can get most of the F glass pretty cheap in 9/10 or even sometimes 10/10 condition. All the FL and PF glass are still perfectly viable options in 2024. Even some of the G glass, such as the 300 f2.8G VRII, is a viable option, as is the F 200-500 f5.6E. That's 9-10 great/exceptional F lenses plus the Z glass. Z 100-400, Z 180-600, Z 400 f4.5, Z 600 PF, Z 800 PF, and the pro 400/600 TC lenses. Perhaps the most underrated of the Z super tele lineup is the 800 PF. That lens is crazy good for the price.

    Hallo Jan. Ich hab mir den Teil zur Z6III besonders interessiert angeschaut. Lange hatte ich auf die Vorstellung gewartet ( wie so viele). Jetzt muss ich feststellen, dass sie für mich nicht die passende Kamera ist. Etwas mehr Auflösung und ein kippbares Display hätten mir besser gefallen. Dennoch ist sie natürlich toll in vielerlei Hinsicht.
    Der schnelle Signalfluss durch den teilweise gestapelten Sensor bringt viele Vorteile. Die Video-Features sind grandios. Wer das nutzt, macht mit dem Kauf keinen Fehler. 👍🏻

    Hi Jan, thanks for the updates !
    When we see the Z6iii getting CFxB, I strongly hope the R5ii will get 2 of those .. any word on this from your hands-on friends ?? My CFxB is clearly slower than your new Gen4 cards, yet it's blazing fast compared to the SD cards ..
    Is your new Nya-evo really 40 liters and not 36 ? The 36 doesn't seem expandable to 50, so I guess it's so new it isn't yet on their website 😛
    I have been checking out these backpacks some weeks ago, and based upon dimensions I feared the RCI-L would be just too small for the R5 & 200-800 & 100-500 & 24-105 & 14-35, so I feared I'd had to go for the Fjord 60 & RCI-XL .. but then (on the EU website) both the RCI-L & RCI-XL are sold out. After some doubting, I ended up getting a LowePro Whistler 450.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  28 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes the 40L was only on Kickstarter for now, but I’m sure it’ll be added soon.
      R5 II will be SD and CFx

    • @WernerBirdNature
      @WernerBirdNature 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jan_wegener Aha, I wasn't aware of the kickstarter part ..
      On my R6 I used to write jpg as backup to the second card. On the R5 I stopped doing that because only when opting the lowest resolution jpg, my V30 SD card wasn't causing buffering issues. My single CFxB never ever acted up during 200k images, and when shooting cRaw only (and doing some feathering) I hardly ever fill the buffer.
      So I only keep the SD in the camera for the case when I'd need to shoot beyond 0.5TB in a single day.
      But when I take out the CFxB before taking out the battery, then the R5 switches to the SD for both stills and video which is soooo annoying. The R5ii promises to be awesome, but I'm not aware of any valid reason to defend keeping an SD card 😞 And given the R1 seems destined to eat the R3 alive (like your kingfisher swallowed the crab), the fact the R3 has an SD card is no valid reason to handicap the R5ii the same way ..

    hi Jan,
    with its 24 mpx sensor the r1 is such a let down that TH-cam rumors accounts are struggling to keep the hype....
    fortunately for them ( and us) the r5 mk2 shouldn't disappoint but can it really wow the audience ???
    regarding Adobe, now that you have to buy credits to run the generative functions, wouldn't that be fair of them to give credits to customers when their material is used to train their Ai models ???

    Jan you heard the rumours about R6III or possibly different named camera getting the R3 sensor? That would be a game changer for sure. No reason why the 24MP cameras can't have the good stuff like the 45MP ones. Would also love to see a massively updated R7 II with basically R6II body, same button layout, Z6III type EVF, CF-E Type B + SD II slots, 30fps, big buffer, stacked sensor or at least one with < 1/100s scan speed, 26-28MP, 6K60p. Current R7 is a massive let down and not worthy of the name R7. It's the true R10. I would gladly pay $2500US for R7 II with said specs.

    Yes I would be a little disappointed also with R1 24 megapixels for wild life photography but sports shooters might love the higher iso performance along the the supposed canon RF 200-500mm f4 which I would assume would weigh about 7ibs and would greatly help putting those 24 megapixels at your desired composition without much cropping vs a prime lens. This why we will have the R5 Mark Ii which would be a better choice for prime lens in my humble opinion. 😊

    Honest reviews temper user expectations and can lead to happier customers since they have gone into a purchase after weighing the pros and cons of the product against their use case. IMO this is far better than users who feel cheated and lied to by manufacturers and reviewers when they are surprised by hidden shortcomings of the product.

    I'm on the fence about the Z6iii because of the sensor size. I currently shoot the D500 which has a 21 mp dx sensor. It seems like moving to a 24 mp fx sensor would result in lower pixel density and a loss of resolution. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that Jan.

    • @nickcarneyphotography
      @nickcarneyphotography 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      The only advantage you can gain by having a smaller sensor size is speed. But the Z6iii sensor is partially stacked so the Z6iii will be better in every regard when it comes to sensor size. You'll have more resolution and larger pixels which means better low=light performance. You'll also have higher dynamic range. If your concern is only sensor size, the Z6iii is the clear and obvious choice.

    • @Sinthora97
      @Sinthora97 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@nickcarneyphotography That is just plain wrong (and that is coming from someone that shoots full frame exclusively atm). Jack is right about pixel density. I would ask myself if I had the opportunity to get closer to my subjects. If you find yourself as close as you can get atm "upgrading" from D500 to Z6 will reduce image quality for the same framing because you have to crop to dx. If you can get closer (maybe you don't have to be that close because you shoot bigger mammals) full frame will have an advantage. The autofocus will be a big step up either way.

    • @Sinthora97
      @Sinthora97 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Another way of thinking about this is this: image quality will be higher with the Z6 if you can get close enough. It will be worse if you have to crop to DX. That could result in the following: your overall keeper rate goes down because you are too far away most of the time. However, the very best pictures you take will be even better quality, because you managed to get very close to take advantage of the full frame sensor (and therefore better background separa tion etc). Short version: *fewer keepers but higher quality ceiling*. That might be a fair trade-off, if you go for a quality over quantity approach.
