    Hello Sir. Great job. I have a couple of oldies i have to do. One tip if i may. In future re-oilings use a lighter oil, like sowing machine oil or the more expensive specialised oils for knives (KPL) but sowing machine oil is cheap and good. They attract and hold less dirt that 3in1 universal. All the best.

    A great restoration, well done and I really like the wood finish.
    In the early to mid eighties my mother brought my brother and myself a Champ each back from Switzerland. I would have been in my mid twenties and my brother around thirty, and although we have both used our knives extensively we probably haven’t abused them to the degree we would have done if we'd been fifteen when we first got them.
    The knives are still used and coincidentally we both keep them in our camera bags now, neither of us knew this is where the other kept their knife until very recently. The only blades I have never used are the descaling and disgorger ones, and these days the magnifying glass is one of the most used.
    Mum is no longer with us but we always have a special reminder of an amazing lady, and when neither of us are still around they will go to my grandsons (my brother has no children).
    A very special video, thank you for posting it.

    I got mine from my late grandfather...and it got some sand beneath the plastic cover...can i just peel the plastic off?so i can remove the sand

    • @PhilMakesThings

      They will pop off easily, but you will break the tabs that hold them onto the body of the knife, so they will have to be glued back on once you've cleaned them. Hope that helps.

    Great project Phil. Need to do something similar with mine but if to try tighten up the knife blade it's gone a bit wabbley. Any tips?

    • @PhilMakesThings
      @PhilMakesThings  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching Alan 👍 I think if the stack is getting wobbly the best thing to do is drill out the old rivets and peen in some new ones. Good for another lifetime then!

    That ebonising secret sauce works great, can you share what’s in it?

    • @PhilMakesThings
      @PhilMakesThings  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Christopher 😀. It's really not a secret, just leave some fine gauge steel wool in a jar of white vinegar for a couple of weeks... then apply to oak - or any other wood with a high tannin content. If you want to, you can add teabags to put additional tannins in the sauce.

    • @themaninthesuitcase

      Standard, guess I need a jam jar and some vinegar, from the vinegar people.

    Why use oak and then ruin it.

    • @PhilMakesThings
      @PhilMakesThings  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn’t consider ebonising oak “ruining”, but that’s subjective. Thanks for watching. 👍

      Phil Makes Things quite right, no offense intended. I just would have preferred to see the natural beauty of the wood, but you did a great job.
