    A decidedly humble man that indeed makes him very likeable. Truly an inspirational and heroic man to be looked up to. A great interview.

    I remember both guys well. John Dunn I believe was more of a radio presenter. And bonnington,, well absolute national treasure at the time..

    Pardon me for the question and this interview is extremely interesting after watching "1975: Everest the hard way" but it's fascinating to think that if the cameraman Mick who died in a white out storm by himself almost at the top made it to the top as Chris Bonington is supposing then without a doubt he would have filmed himself if only for a few seconds or was that not possible due to the lense minimum focal distance. But if he did and then fell in a wind blaze over the ridge to the Kangshung glacier 10,000 feet down to his death then that footage is still in his baf preserved by freezing temperatures. Even though it would be very hard to find his body that could have been swallowed by an ice crevass since or will. But eventually someone in the future will find it. As long as the undevelopped film stays in its box or the sun does not wipe it blank if it gets exposed.

      If he ended up in a crevasse he an his equipment would have been ground to dust. It's a moving frozen giant grinder.

    Bonington is describing his own client ascent with the Norwegians. Bonington hadn't climbed Everest at all. He was a leader in Base camp!

    I couldn't quite make out what Chris said about retracing Mike Burkes footsteps - did he say 'straight through the harness ' or something like that? And later did he say the south col was the size of a 1000 football pitches? surely not.

    • @sabbatini2372
      @sabbatini2372 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      He said Mick Burke walked through a cornice. And that the South Col is the size of a football pitch.

      Bearing in mind that Mick had prescription glasses under his goggles too, he would have had next to zero visibility in a whiteout.

      Haston, Doug Scott and Don Whillans are the top climbers the UK has produced imo.

      @@donuttime2507 Don Whilians (if i am not mistaken with names) was convicted for killing a pedestrian while driving drunk in the uk. That's a dark spot on his life. Don Whillans and Doug Scott are legendary as team members. Reinhold Mesmer climbed the everest solo and without oxygen, no sherpas, no nothing, 5 days up, 3 day down which easily places him above all others.

    It's a pity that this interview was so time constrained. His material was so dense and fascinating at every word. Even one hour would have been short. Big error by Thames Tv producers here.
