    Great video. I'm onto practice and here's my main difficulty : I'm doing that exact shape (14 on the G, 15 on the B, 13 on the E string) and I'm using my index finger for the 14 and the 13. So I have to fret the 14, lift it without pulling off, then move it to 13, without ever creating a pulloff noise. That's quite tricky IMO.

    • @agile828mn
      @agile828mn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am having this same issue with the G string! I found this channel because of it. It seems no matter how lightly I let off the G string still buzzes. Its almost like the string gets stuck to my fingertip since it is not a wound string and it is just thick enough. Even if I very carefully just barely touch the string and then let off very softly it will still buzz. It would take a team of engineers to let off any softer! I think it must be a palm muting issue since its so tricky to shift the palm mute with precision.

      @@15gauge59 The player in this video uses very low distortion which reduces noise a lot and makes it way easier. It is okay for explaining but not for rocking a killer solo.

      Notice how he rest his pinky, ring and middle finger on the higher strings to mute the strings. It is subtle but he is totally using the soft part of his fingers to mute the strings. You don't even need to use the middle finger but the video will give you a clear idea of how to approach it. One last thing, he is not only resting, you need to push the strings slightly to make the muting happen faster.

    • @LuminousDark
      @LuminousDark  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A fret wrap comes in handy when you are going to record in the studio for an album, EP or Single. I personally don't have anything against them for those purposes. But for on the fly I would recommend really honing in your technique to get it as clean as you can.

    when muting with right hand, do you use the meat of the thumb to mute? or do you use the other side of the right hand, the side of the palm?

    Can someone help me? I'm practicing a two string arpeggio (D and G strings) with alternate picking and I need to mute the B and E strings. It's quite a stretch so my left hand is very busy. I've tried placing my right hand pinky above the B string but it's so awkward and uncomfortable to me. What can I do?

    • @LuminousDark
      @LuminousDark  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends but you hover your palm over the strings that have just been played so that they don’t ring afterwards by accident. I do this when sweeping downwards.

    Excellent building block approach! Question? What are your thoughts of developing Tom Hess's picking hand thumb muting approach to sweeps?

    • @brianbergmusic5288
      @brianbergmusic5288 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alfred Potter also advocates using part of thumb pad (the chicken drumstick) to mute the bass strings. You can also see a myriad of players using their thumb pad in muting based on how they hold their pick. However, this method has one Achille's heel: thumb scraping. If you play any arpeggios where the notes are aggressively palm muted, you will encounter this problem. You can hear this problem if you don't even pick up the pick, but scrape your thumb pad along the wound strings of your guitar through a high gain/distorted amp. You need to train yourself to avoid letting all of your thumb rest on the wound strings otherwise it will cause more unwanted scraping sounds to come through your amplifier in a metal context. You can sometimes clean up on this problem by rolling off the volume knob and letting the amplifier latch onto the muted notes and less of the thumb scraping, but your mileage may vary depending on your amp/amp sim.
      However, for cleaner playing and hybrid picking I find it to be an excellent technique for muting in general. I can't seem to live without the technique because if I rely only on my hypothenar (the karate chop) to mute the strings then my picking hand becomes cocked to a very uncomfortably angle and my fingers always bump the volume knob on my strat-like guitar. However, if you can build a foundation of techniques that rely mostly on your hypothenar, then you might be able to avoid the troubles of thumb scrape entirely... my 2 cents.
