I've owned the FP5 since it came out. Am really happy with it, I used to own the original crowd funded FP1 10 years ago as well 🙂 I'll be waiting for the Android 14 coming, already have installed two new security updates since I have the FP5. Am excited to have this phone for the next 5 to 8 years or longer if possible. Dropped my phone on a rock and I was lucky I had the screen protector, which shattered but the display didn't have a scratch. So got a new protector and am a happy person once again! Thanks to the great Team who helped bring this model out, well done guys and gals! Best regards from Switzerland, peace.
From rootable, flashable hardware with a relockable bootloader, to external sd support, to independently modular components; Fairphone is truly a phone for adults. Please never change! Hoping to see the FP5 in the US soon!
I mostly agree but I prefer smaller screen. 4 inch is the optimal in my opinion because with 4 inch display most people can comfortably touch every corner of the screen while holding phone with one hand.
what are the chances you'll drop your Fairphone 7 wishlist, right when we release the Fairphone 6? 😄 But no, seriously - thanks for the inspiration. We'll forward to our product team
Nice to get some questions answered! I'll take the liberty to ask some myself: 1. To Stephany and the software team: The Fairphone can be used and even bought with alternate Android ROMs, which I think is wonderful! However, the camera app is only available when using stock Android. This appears to come down to issues with licensing and the closed down nature of the software. *Would Fairphone consider making the camera app available in such a way that it can be provided with installations of other Android ROMs?* 2. To Miquel and the hardware team: In an interview with Our Changing Climate three years ago, you talked about modularity saying: "Don't buy a new phone, buy a new camera…". *Is upgradability still an ambition or has this had to change since?* 3. Generally to anyone within manufacturing or logistics: There seems to be quite a global interest to buy your products. *What are the main hurdles to expand beyond Europe?* _No need to answer everything, just anything you do have an answer to. I'm just curious._
I love a lot of what the Fairphone team is doing, but my biggest problems with the Fairphone 5 are the lack of a headphone jack (a bit contradictory to their message in my opinion) and the size. If the phone had a headphone jack and was around 20% to 25% smaller it would've been perfect.
You can't have the phone be smaller without harming repairability. Especially if you also introduce another port. They need to use off the shelf parts so they don"t have to custom make base stuff in 5 years like the screen.
@@tjeulink can you provide sources for your argument, please? Because if even other small companies like Unihertz and Cubot for example have access to smaller screens AND can make much smaller phones that include a headphone jack, I see no reason why Fairphone can’t. They’re likely just following current market trends to sell more products (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing and I still respect their decision).
I really appreciate what Fairphone is working towards. I hope for more support of various degoogled os's, and maybe a way to upgrade various components in the future without having to upgrade the entire phone (like what Framework is doing). I'm looking seriously at importing the international version and installing e/os now that the easy installer supports the FP5.
This sounds very interesting, I like the prospect that I can upgrade parts of the phone. I work outdoors a lot of the time. My experience has meant, I have damaged a number of phones, as well as some so called weather proof. What kind of protective cases could I use on this phone
Honestly, the only thing I could ask for is the headphone jack back, and for shipping to be available in Canada. Otherwise, this looks pretty damn good and when I get the chance to buy one eventually, it will complement my framework laptop very nicely.
Hi @Fairphone , I am a big admirer of your work. I plan to move to Fairphone as my next smartphone. 👍 If Fairphone were to ever make a notebook or laptop computer, would you please consider including a waterproof keyboard by default? Thank You so much for your consideration. Namaste. 🙏 Further explanation: Portable computers such as notebook and laptop computers would be so much more long-lasting if, by default, they included a waterproof keyboard design. No one should be at risk of damaging their investment with an open keyboard design leading to the core of the computer. Please protect the core. It is unbelievably common for some people to eat and drink while working. Or even use hand sanitizer. A desktop or tablet computer, is not anywhere close to being as vulnerable, as the highly important, portable notebook and laptop computers. Waterproofing and water-resistant designs have been made “normal” with smartphones and tablets. The next step of positive evolution with computing may very well be waterproof keyboards on notebook and laptop computers as the new default design.
that's a great idea - have you heard of Framework before? They're basically the Fairphone of laptops. And if you're looking to get that idea made by someone, they'd be much closer to making it a reality than we are at this point. For now, we're sticking to smartphones and audio products - but yeah, check out Framework. Great alternative for laptops :)
Wishlist from Fairphone: Framework Laptop competitor: Framework is great, but I love Fairphone's iconic labels Release worldwide: PLEASE! Most Ebay listings for the Fairphone 5 are really sketchy, so please offer worldwide! I've also seen a lot of comments wanting it in India. Smaller Fairphone: Alos one that is wanted. However, it might be hard.
Fairphone doesn't ship phones to my country yet, but if this phone supported Graphene OS I would go abroad just to buy it :D Fingers crossed it becomes a thing in the future
I really would like a fairphone with bigger screen 7'' and at least with 512gb internal memory and also 12gb ram. In this way, I am at the save side... No all the apps are possible to install at micro sd card...
fairphone brand should change its corporate structure to a cooperative structure(every employee will have the democratic power to vote for their benefit) to be fair.
I would like to provide some feedback and requests going further to FP6/7.I wish to be heard and I want to support Fairphone. I own a Fairphone 4 (Calyx OS), Fairphone 5 for work (Stock OS). - Headphone jack - 6inch oled 90hz - Smaller - Lighter - Grippy plastic case + slimmer - Square display panel. - On-screen fingerprint. - Camera autofocus on closeups. - Manual privacy switches Microphone/Camera/Front facing camera/antennas. - Better support for custom ROMs. - Edges not to be so sharp (FP5). - OIS on wide lens. - Reduced cost with optional parts: Optional 5G, Optional wide angle? I am really happy to see no wireless charging on the phones. I love the transparent back cover, its awesome. (FP5) I love the availability of parts and being able to fix it. I love being able to put the operating system that I want on the phone. I am sad to say but now I daily drive a Google Pixel 7A with Graphene OS as a personal phone and the FP5 as my work phone. I want to use Graphene OS on Fairphone, but because of security patches issues its not supported... The pixel has a comfortable phone case available like the onyx; smaller weight; usable one handed; Graphene OS; I wasn't able to onboard my parents on the Fairphone train because its too expensive for them. Wish Fairphone the best. And thank you for trying to be the best for the world. - Anonymous
Fairphone makes big mistak. Not making it more privacy oriented. You guys should do what Murena are doing. And what Purism Librem 5 tried to be. That's the only markedet i can se you guys grow.
I would love to buy a Fairphone because I am convinced of what you stand for. But I do not understand why you produce in China, where China is known for violating human rights. How does this fit to all your fair aspects.
I'm not sure about the financial incentives of supporting the phone for eight years. It seems to me that fairphone would get more money if people bought new phones. Maybe a subscription model could help here. I'd be happy to pay something like 5€ per month to incentivize long term support.
Yet another subscription seems like a bad idea to me. There are too many subscriptions already in all sort of markets these days and the general consensus is that people are getting righteously tired of all these subscriptions, I think especially the target audience of people that'd be interested in a Fairphone. If the financials would not allow for 8 years of updates, which I do think it will since they have done 5 years of support for all their previous models and I can't imagine they wouldn't have worked out the numbers before making such a promise, a better monetization model would be 5 year of support guaranteed, and afterwards optionally a small one time fee per major update (so excluding minor updates such as security updates or bug fixes).
A couple things you should improve for the 6: 1) OIS on both cameras, wide and ultrawide. Should be doable. 2) LTPO OLED screen. 3) Headphone jack. And one advice: play more into the whole repairability angle with your advertisement, there are a lot of people who reject the idea of climate change (myself included) but like the idea of a fixable phone and/or giving the finger to Big Tech.

Not sold in the US, doesn't have all the bands that carriers have. Also carriers have to be white listed to work.
