We should just rename the Chinese the Shavers at this point. They just have to shave a little every chance they get. Every 20 weights it is like the manufacturer gets one for free! That sort of thing can really add up for them.

I've done that, and you'd be surprised at the outcome.
My claim was accepted, but the seller said *they* have been screwed by the supplier.
It looks like the sellers know next to nothing about the stuff they sell - they only know how to sell - so the producers lie to them.
That's not an excuse to feel bad for the sellers, they should get a different job - but that just shows how dishonest the Chinese are to *everyone*.

@@LMB222 Pretty much what I was going to say. OK, the seller is responsible but they are just box shifters, if you get one removed from the platform there are 5 others waiting to take their place. What is needed is the platform (Aliexpress, Temu, etc) being held accountable by the customs for the lack of proper safety provisions, it does, after all carry the RoHS mark but clearly does not comply.

looks well made from the outside, I could've fall for it, at least I expected the USB-C ports to have at least 15w of fast charging, so sellers on stores may plug it into customers phone and it would show "fast charging" at least so they can sell it and get away. Curious to see that even dodgy chargers are using synchronous rectifiers now.

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +19

Synchronous rectifier chips became very common. Once mass produced, they're very cheap. When something has been around for years, the main production cost is the materials. A diode contains more of them to handle more heat loss.

Ha! I ordered this charger's cousin (has a LED display for V/A) that is advertised at 20W a few weeks ago. My load testing showed it reliably died >9.5W, and got warm doing it. Took it apart like you did, and found the Chinese switching supply chip, which in the datasheet clearly indicated it was a 10W max chip. The reference circuit in the datasheet was basically the charger's circuit, but with those janky clips to allow different country plugs to be swapped on. Right into the trash - waste of $3.

4:08 - in case anybody is wondering about USB-C, there is a 10K pull-up on CC, which corresponds to USB-PD source of 5V 3A (they could have gone with 22K for 1.5A), and the A6/A7/B6/B7 (D+ and D-) pins are shorted and pulled up with 43K and down with 51K, which is BC1.2 for an Apple charger of 5V 1A. Dodgy indeed.

So, not even 120 deciwatts. But seems to be great a socket heater and surprise fire starter. I wonder if the "added quality" actually is mostly iron, or if that's how they get rid of spent nuclear fuel that they can't use to make weapons.

It is a shame they glue everything together now, so you can't check something non-destructively before using.
Some of the ones 3 times the price might be OK, or they could be just the same junk inside.
I've seen some transparent cased USB chargers on aliexpress, but either the dodgy small transformer can be seen or the photos are computer generated.

what they mean with 120w max is that when it electrocutes you it will draw at most 120w of power. Cheers.

I have one of those and use it daily.. lol. however I never thought the 120W was remotely real for the price. I was hoping for 18w or something really. kinda expected the dissapointment.
It is hoever used by one of my children..if I never plug something demanding more than < 20w is it safe? otherwise I'll throw it away.

Could you imagine that thing actually delivering 120W? At 80 percent efficient that would be like 24W power dissipation... Imagine shoving a 24W heater inside that case... In order to be feasible it would have to be more than 90 percent efficient. That's active rectification bridge and secondary, active power factor correction, really expensive switching components.
Does anyone even make something like that, in that form factor?

Phones have a data line that they send out their capacitance and it goes down as the battery heats up.
So the charger is supposed to regulate the amount of voltage they are sending the phone to keep the battery from overheating
There should be a chip on this one to regulate the voltage and the chip should have a pin to connect to the data line from the phone

I am sure that the thing that it says on the charger are fake but if it has usb c pd (what 99% of usb c chargers use) that you need a trigger board that talks to the charger to get higher voltages or more amps. if there is no trigger board they often only give like 5V with 0.5 to 2A
The chrager was fake but your voltage/apmere testing would not even have worked if it was not fake (since no trigger board)

To nevíte, že číňani mají jiné jednotky? Musíte jejich výkon podělit stem a potom dlouhodobý výkon odpovídá! 🙂 To platí u všech jejich výrobků. Baterie, generátory, audiozesilovače.
Don't you know that the Chinese have other units? You have to divide their performance by a hundred and then the long-term performance corresponds! 🙂 This applies to all their products. Batteries, generators, audio amplifiers 🙂

I remember back in the day where all electrical devices in the USA had to be UL rated for safety. Cheap imports have overrun the landscape here. I even have seen some lamps for traditional light bulbs sold with non-polarized plugs. It's a free for all, and the only way to be safe is to be knowledgeable. Thank you for making these videos.
