Turbulence, Mountains & Ice oh My! IFR Flight to Truckee in a Cessna 310.

  • This is one of the hardest IFR flights I've done in a long time. What starts out in clear blue skies turns into to some serious IFR conditions in the mountains over Truckee / Tahoe area.

    Lets recap: Hard IMC, icing, a long hold in IMC, then winds gusting 25kts, WITH YOUR FAMILY IN THE PLANE. Stayed ahead of the plane and got through that massive workload like a champ. Great work man! These are the situations and conditions that have claimed many before us in the GA world. Hats off to you sir.

    Any landing you can walk away from is good. Any landing you can walk away from and not need an inspection is a better one. Any landing you can walk away from and fly the airplane again is a great one.

    Thanks for sharing. My wife would not have been as calm as yours was regarding the ice and gusty winds. Nice work!

    You’re already at an altitude where it’s going to be cold….turn the pitot heat on early. Also, just prior to entering any clouds where ice may be suspect, turn on the prop deice.

    Just curious, were you not on oxygen for that time at 13,000? Seems like you were up there for at least 30 minutes? Personally, I go on o2 anytime I am above 10,000 for extended periods.

    Man pucker factor for sure! You did an outstanding job my friend with everything that you had to manage at such a critical portion of the flight. My wife knows when I say the word STERILE....... I need to truly focus and unless it’s an emergency she see’s that I need to be made aware of we don’t talk again until we shut the plane down. My hat is off to you!👍

      Right around 27:21 in the video my wife asked some question and my only response was "task saturated." I cut it of the TH-cam video because it seemed "insensitive." However insensitive my response seemed the reality of the situation was that I needed to remain focused on flying the plane. Especially because at this time in the video we are off course 😬.

      @@thefamilythatfliestogether I couldn’t agree with you anymore. We all have tasks we can juggle and the more we fly and push our saturation limit the better we get but it doesn’t make that moment when we are almost one task away from it getting beyond our limit any less unnerving. You did an incredible job and that video couldn’t be more spot on. I believe you actually helped a lot of pilots experience this without having to manage it. This makes us all better and safer pilots so thank you.

      Thanks! It was pretty rough in the beginning with the wind, turbulence and ice but I was able to get back on track in not too long.

    I;m thinking the "crew stairs" down during taxi isn't legit.

      Actually that is how it works. If you watch the video when we take off the stairs go up when you retract the gear. But I see your point they do look real low to the ground. I've even had ATC warn me about "something" hanging down but yeah that is how it is stock. Thanks for watching.
