I met him in high school when he spoke for our Black History Program at Spartanburg High School in Spartanburg, SC. This was in Feb 1985. After the event, we had a reception and I spoke to him about possibly studying mechanical engineering vs. music. He encouraged me to choose engineering because he could tell I was afraid to pursue engineering because it was unknown to me. He shared with me that he also was a musician and that I should not be afraid to explore the unknown. He said he had similar concerns when he attended NC A &T State Univ, which he also encouraged me to go to. He inspired me to pursue Mechanical Engineering from which I graduated from at NC State University. His life story is SO inspiring. I often wonder what else he could have contributed had he and the other astronauts lived. He was so humble and approachable. R.I.P Dr. McNair and all others who have sacrificed their life in the name of science.

His death was largely overshadowed by Krista Mcauliffe. Not trying to undermine her at all, but McNair was easily the most impressive astronaut on that flight. Their lives were equally precious, but McNair’s story and accomplishments are utterly inspirational.

@@MrPaglissi Agreed. I recently watched a documentary on the challenger on Netflix and he and his family were mere after thoughts throughout it in MY opinion.

He gave a similar speech for the commencement at the University of the Virgin Islands in June, 1985. I had just graduated from high school and had the great opportunity to hear him give the university commencement address and also meet him afterwards. He was so gracious to talk to me since I was going to pursue a degree in Physics. I remember how encouraging he was. Now, 35 years as a physics professor and researcher, hearing his words again remind me of how inspiring he was. I can only hope that I have been able to small taste of that to my own students over the years.

Charismatic. I can only think what he would have had achieved MORE if the incident had not happened.

And to think it was 100% avoidable too. NASA completely robbed America of the opportunity to see what Dr McNair could have done.

Thanks for uploading. I always wondered what he was like. His accomplishments are pretty well laid out online. But who was this guy who comes out of nowhere, racks up a lifetime++ of achievements in 36 years then disappears in an instant? Even though it’s a prepared speech, his personality comes through and it gives you a sense of him. I wouldn’t have thought someone so accomplished in the sciences would be personable. Sounds like a pretty cool guy. Wonder what he’d be up to now. 🤔 RIP Dr McNair!

Damn, I wish I could've met him. Unfortunately I was born about 5 months after the _Challenger_ explosion. He was supposed to play his sax live for a show/live recording via satellite from the shuttle and that would've been great in more ways than one.
